My m-38/ an introduction to haggling.
By: mat!_SW Date: November 1, 2013, 12:32 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I haven't noticed any m 38s around here, and have never
photographed mine before. It seems like now is the time to show
and tell. What I have is a 1943 Izhevsk m 38 refurb. Its
pretty common as far as m 38s. It is all stamped matching with
Cyrillic prefixies, buy at least the floor plate is a force
match. Its in OK shape, but looks like some idiot took a wire
wheel to the bolt and it has what look like cross grain
scratches on the finish. 3/4 in counterbore as well.
When I saw this rifle sitting on the table at a semi-local
show I was a little surprised. It was sitting next to a really
nice 91/59 in a blonde stock. This was the only one I could
afford though. I did what I always do and brought cash. 150
cash that is. At the time 91/30s refurbs or otherwise were
going for below 100 bucks. My reasoning was if I bring 150 I
can get a 91/30 if I see one I like, some ammo, and a couple
beers and a burger after the show.
So I pick up the m 38 and is has a price tag of 200. Fuck
my life! I looks it over and start playing dumb. "Is this cut
down from another rifle?" I knew it wasn't. "The rear sight
looks different than my m44" Then the fun began. I asked
"would you take 150?" He said no as he had to get out of it
what he had in it. (This is an old trick gun show table guys
use all the time. generally they are full of shit) I said I
didn't have enough money to make that deal, but thanks and
started to walk away. The man at the table knowing I couldn't
come up with anything offered to meet me in the middle. So now
we are at 175. When he said "meet me in the middle" I continued
to be an idiot and gave him a dumbfounded look and asked what he
meant. He explained, but the lack of cash in my wallet really
wasn't gonna help his situation. Finnally because he was trying
to push me into the sale I said "175 would be an ok price if it
wasn't riding in an m44 stock, and had a counterbore" and
started to walk the length of his table. He figured out that I
was not as dumb as I was acting. You should have seen his face.
It was priceless. he followed me the length of the table
holding the m 38 saying it was a great gun and it could be mine
for 175. This guy had a long table and by the time we got to
the end of it with me being silent the whole time I handed him
150 he handed me an m38 we shook hands and went about our
business. I asked him if he wanted to do some paperwork. Turns
out it was from his private collection and he is a collector
too. He must have upgraded his m 38 and decided to get rid of
this one. So that's how I got it 50 bucks under the pricetag.

I think super macro combined with bad lighting is giving my
shots that grainy texture look. Any advice spax?
Note the repair behind the magazine. I had forgotten about
that. Another good reason to pull some gun out of the safe and
take a few pics.

I'm not sure, more than likely they had to change its shape
since its an m44 stock. I'm not really sure how big the
difference is in shape between the m 38 and m 44. I don't think
it would be that much.

I am confused, I thought refurbs didnt have the letter prefixes
on floorplate and such? But it has the M44 stock and counter
bore! Either way, nice one!

Many refurbs have the prefixes. As you can see the floor plate
is clearly force matched, but the added the prefixes anyway. I
have another refurb with them as well. Its a 1944 Izhevsk ex
sniper. Its actually quite interesting. As far as refurbs go I
think the refurb program happened on a much larger scale than we
think. Some depots added prefixes some just the number. Some
were stamped to match, and some depots didn't bother. Some
stamped some electropenciled. Then you have the various places
that refurbed and noted it with the boxes with slashes through
them. [/] [l] The 44 ex sniper I mentioned has a hexagon with a
slash through it. On that topic I've only seen that on one
other rifle and it was an sks. I personally feel that/25\ is
another refurb mark. Then you start thinking about all the
various unknowns and your head will really start to spin!

One mark I'd thought was type of refurb mark was the PM stamp.
Saw it on a 37 Tula refurb today in fact. Saw it the other day
on a Finn capture 91/30. So that kinda killed the post warrefurb
mark idea.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the point if "ex-snipering" a
rifle? Seems counter productive to me?

[/quote]I've seen it mostly on Finns, and a few refurbs. I have
no idea what it is but it does pop up now and again. Its like
the KO tombstone, xo 47 and xo 48 and dare I say the MO marked
rifles. People have ideas but no one really knows. My thoughts
on all of this lead me to believe refurb marks.
