Can't say for sure so lets call this a non-refurb/mixmaster

Bought this of brokegunner. Its a 37 Izhevesk mixmaster with
wire hangers, an unpinned rear sight, no import marks, a stock
that I kind of like, steel ends on the hand guard, and mostly
Izhevsk parts so far as I've found. I've only had it home a few
minutes. Its got really thick grease on it that is definitely
not cosmoline. I won it for 140 + 25 dollars shipped. So at
165 I don't feel too bad for a non import marked rifle.

More pics. There are remnants of stock cartouches, the magazine
looks like it was in a different rifle for a long time, and the
trigger looks kind of short. it actually has a nice trigger for
       a Mosin

There is a stamp on the cleaning rod that I just can't seem to
capture in todays light, But I'll attempt some more

I like it! I had to do a doubletake, I sold one just like that
not long ago on armslist. Not the same one. ;D
Sure looks like SCW to me.

SCW was my gut too, but Lancebear and lthilsdorf's website have
mentioned the steel caps on the hand guard make this unlikely.
I'm not 100% sure I really subscribe to this theory, and can't
recall ever seeing a mention to when steel hand guard ends were
put into place on 7.62x54r.net or mosinnagant.net which is where
I learned most of what I know about SCW Mosins, along with
reading "Arms For Spain" which I highly recommend btw. For the
time being it is a lot easier to say I don't know what it is
than rule it SCW for certain. Its a cool rifle in my book
       anyhow.

One thing I've run across is that so many SCW 91/30s have
cracked handguards. I believe the steel caps are WW2, but I've
seen a USSR marked 91/30 with steel end caps. The owner told me
he had replaced the cracked handguard with another with a close
match finish-wise. So, steel end caps don't mean an automatic
       SCW disqualification to me.

Also its pretty clear that the hand guard and rest of the stock
have been together a long time. The color, patina, and all that
jazz match each other well. I'll have to really dig in and find
out about the steel ends for certain.

I agree racerguy....it very well could be a stateside addition.
Another thing is that there are so many Mosins that are outside
the norm that there really is no norm. Lol. I like the rifle
and in my collection it shall stay.

Has there ever been info dug up on the "dice mark" beyond a
possible hardness test or something? I recently saw a 1918
Remington with it. Is it still a possible SCW trait?

Back in the day Ted swore up and down its a hardness test. He
would never site his source though. lthilsdorf lists the dice
as a possible, but I don't like to use it as a definite.
