5line is short for how tula stamped their barrel shanks in the
1920s.
The reason why its called 5 line - there are 5 lines of text
that fill out the entire barrel shank giving it a nice ruski
appearance.

Thank you, so a three line would be the exact same but with 3
lines of text? Did just Tula make 5 lines or did izhevesk also
make them?

Well, three line originally referred to the caliber of .30 and
was dubbed the "three line rifle". Pretty much meant .30 caliber
rifle to people at the time. You have to remember, that was a
pivotal time in the firearms industry. Everyone was looking for
the prefect rifle and much new technology emerged out of the
1890's. I'm not sure if there is a three text line rifle, Spax,
you need to chime in on this one, out of my league.
I got the quote for the three line thing from "Tales of the Gun"
so if that info is wrong, that show is wrong.

The Russians did not call the Mosin-Nagant by it's name. In
Russian, they called it the "three line rifle." It did refer to
the caliber, but since Czarist Russia did not use the metric
system or English measurements, it does't truely mean .30
caliber; but for all intensive purposes hashash you are correct
there.

Thanks for clearing up the "telephone" effect. I knew it was
close to that. At least I got the first part right lmao.

They referred to it as the three line rifle. A Nagant is a
pistol. The rest of the world refers to as the Mosin Nagant, or
the Mosin rifle.

This thread has been inactive for a little while. If you're a
new member feel free to post pics of your collection, even if
it's one rifle. We promise we won't hammer you, unless it's a
bubba'd rifle.
