Jacob Holster, supplier or type of the barrel's steel. I saw a
late 1880s Lebel with the same stamp. Neat to see that.

This is well beyond my pay grade. Thanks for posting this so I
have a resource to learn about these really old birds and the
different markings/features. It's amazing that something that
old will still pick up and fire after well over a hundred years.
Amazing. Love the patina and "rustic" look of this piece.

I just assumed it was the former owners initials. There was a
guy many years ago who put his initials on every piece in his
collection. Now rifles pop up from time to time with his
initials on them. There was a case like that identified on
gunboards a few years ago. I had no idea about the JH stamp.

There are a few other Chatellerault steel marks like this that
show up too. I'll do some digging, I can't remember them off the
top of my head. A p-26 showed up once with the deep JH stamp
still visible on the scrubbed barrel. Helped ID the original
barrel maker.
I guess initials some one stamped are better than their SS or
drivers license #. That used to be REALLY common. When my dad
became a cop in the mid 80's they were still having days at the
PD for people to bring their firearms in and have their info
EP'd on them. Dad hated that.

I have an old .22 that my dad put his SSN on. I'm sure it
lowers the collector value, but it really increases my personal
value.
Getting back to the Chaterault steel stampings-do either of the
major mn collecting sites have this info documented? It seems
that they are both in need of major updates. I get most of my
info from forums so sometimes its hard to remember where I read
stuff. I'm glad you posted about that.

Matt, I'm not seeing it documented, only mentioned in posts. The
other stamp sometimes seen seems to be an M. I'm sure I've seen
others too. They are identical to stamps that appear on some
Lebel barrels. The explanation of the marks referring to the
steel supplier etc was given and repeated by some of the big
time historian/collectors. I'll keep looking.

Oddly enough, Ted's site has a lot more information on there
than can be found on the main page. He has a lot of hidden pages
that one has to know exactly where to look to find them. Heck,
he even has a whole section on Nagant revolvers that he never
linked to the main page.
