never stick anything in the gas tube or the gas key...it's all
       "self-cleaning".

IIRC it was also "self cleaning" in Vietnam, and I'm sure you
know how that worked out. So just get the barrel clean and don't
       do anything else?

Clean the barrel, bolt carrier assembly, and the inside of the
upper receiver. We never touched the gas tube.

[/quote]should I disassemble the carrier group or just clean the
       bolt face?

Disassemble it. You know man, Google does have all of this info.
Asking questions is fine, but when it's something as simple as
this, and the question is being asked just for the sake of
asking, it's sort of pointless. You'll notice most of the
"experienced" guys will do a search first before posting a
question. Yes, there are quite a few things you can't find
yourself, and is why we have a resource base of people, but for
things like this, and other very Google-able things, use Google
THEN if you still can't find it, ask.
We do get it, you're 15, and want to learn which is awesome.
Most of how we learned, is by researching. You can't depend on
other people for every little thing that comes up. Being able to
do your own research is a massive part of
collecting/shooting/reloading and what ever else interests you.
I'm not trying to be an ass at all. I'm just stating a fact. If
you can't do your own research or are "too lazy", you might as
well get out of the hobby at this point. As far as asking
questions to be recognized and for the sake of a "conversation
starter", that's what pictures and unique finds from YOUR
RESEARCH do without constantly bombarding people with the
simplest questions to search for. Before the internetz, we had
books, and I still use books all the time for research. We're
here to help you out, but if you can't help yourself first, why
should someone else have to do it? I know probably about 2% of
what I will acquire in my lifetime, and that's being generous on
       that estimate.
We were all your age once, I was just there not too long ago.
The only difference is we did our own research before asking
somebody. If you find out something really cool that intrigues
the hell out of you, go ahead and share it, as that's a better
conversation starter than, "how do I clean an AR-15". You're
either going to get a link, or a one sentence response. If you
were to find out an easier/more efficient way to clean out the
star chamber, that SOMEONE HASN'T ALREADY DONE, that would be
       another great example.
I think I'm being pretty nice about this, seeing as how when I
got this talk around your age, I was pretty much told to go fuck
myself if I didn't want to learn how to research this stuff on
my own first. Needless to say, those people were absolutely
correct. I'm done with this rant, and it's nice having a
youngster around, but this is the reality of it. Take it for
what you will, throw a fit, get pissy and butthurt, I don't
care. Someday you'll go, "Yeah, that prick was right."

You're exposing yourself here as not knowing what you're talking
about but you're trying to do that and exposing yourself. Follow
along with hash here, you're ratio of asking vs listening and
reading is way out of whack.
