The back of the car has been pretty lopsided since the last
couple events I hit and I've been getting some good crunching
noises so finally decided to get underneath and asses the
damage. Honestly, not as bad as I was expecting - this is the
only spot ripped out. Drivers side rear, accessible through the
trunk. I snagged some tubing and am gonna try to get to it this
weekend.

ouch! that's why they make the precut weld in reinforcement
plates though, because newer cars aren't made to last more that
5 years.

Those weld-in plates are just as temporary - that's why I didn't
waste my time with them in the first place. This is what happens
after those reinforcement plates are put in - the cracks just
show up somewhere else.

The only permanent solution to this is to tie it all into the
shock towers with cross bracing. Mason Engineering makes
"bolt-in" kits for it but I'm gonna do mine a bit differently so
I don't need to use different hardware for the subframe. Coming
from the top also means it doesn't matter if the factory sheet
metal is f*cked before you get to it.

Finally tore into it today. Honestly was kinda sketched out over
cutting into the trunk but turned out to be so simple that I
felt stupid.
The brackets that the subframe bolts to are welded between two
pieces of sheet metal that are beneath these two holes.

You can see part of it if you peek down in there.

Peeled back one layer of sheet metal - Well, it was welded to
them.

This is the other side. See the difference? lol
[img]
HTML http://cavimike.com/328Cisubframe09.JPG[/img]
Peeled back second layer to get to the top of the bracket. You
can see the last layer all shredded that's the underside of the
car.

To push the subframe back into position I just lowered the car
down onto the mounting point. I had to bounce on the back of the
car a little bit to get it pushed all the way back.

I was a little too high in this pic. I jacked the car up
underneath the tire until it was sitting where I wanted it.

Started to cut up some pieces but I can't do too much here at
home, all I have is a sawzall and a couple die grinders, I don't
even have a bench vise, so I focused on the important piece.

No more crunching. Now the subframe is tied directly to the
frame rail and shock tower. It's not going anywhere.

I'll try to finish up the rest of the cross bracing at the shop
this week but honestly, this single piece is prolly all I need.
I ran out of gas welding this up anyways.

Considering this was my "bench" I don't think it came out too
bad.

It's no tubing notcher but it did the trick.

Like a glove.
HTML http://cavimike.com/328Cisubframe17.JPG[/img]
This one was much easier to make with proper tools.

I've never done this before so I'm guessing to make the split
cross bar, I make it in one piece and cut it in half at the
location and angle that the other cross bar is, then notch it?

i usually just make two completely separate pieces and just eye
ball it to make em straight. Not sure if that's the best way.
???
