SR20 Help
By: fogls Date: February 23, 2014, 9:34 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ok long story short a while back I wired up a SAFC NEO to my
car. S14 with S13 Sr20det. I didn't realize it at the time but
I had the wrong pin out for my ecu. Come to find out I had the
power wire for the NEO hooked up to the number one cylinder
signal wire. Car went in to limp mode. I got it back out got
rid of the NEO and found out I had lost spark to cylinder one.
I have now replaced the entire engine harness with a brand new
Wiring Specialties harness, replaced the coil on cylinder one,
and tried four different ignitor chips. The ignitor I bought
off ebay gets hot and the car will not run on its own. I was
given a different chip and the car runs the best on that one.
will idle all day long but definitely still only on three
cylinders. The original chip that was on the car makes the car
run a little rough but it will stay idling. with any of the
chips I can unhook the coil for cylinder one at idle and nothing
changes. I pulled the coil and checked I am definitely not
getting spark there. I am getting fuel as I checked that as
well. Compression is 1-4 138 138 140 140 so compression is not
an issue. The only thing I have not checked or replaced is the
ecu. Is it possible that something shorted in the ecu for
cylinder one? Nothing looked or smelled burnt on the inside of
it. Car is driving me nuts. Also my wideband reads 14.8 while
car is running all the time. Never moves. used to bounce all
over before this happened. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should check the ECU by replacing it with a known good one.
It seems you have eliminated all of the other causes.

That is kind of what I was thinking as well. Thanks Jake.
Does anyone know of any place that sells ecu's other than eBay?

unplug your injectors one at a time.

What will unhooking the injectors one at a time tell me? I want
to make sure that I am looking for the right response. Also
would the cam angle sensor have anything to do with this issue?

just let you know if one injector is dead. It happened to my SR.
Admittedly I didn't think of it, Tyler did this for me at an
event. He solved the problem for me. Whichever one doesn't
change the idle/rev quality is your bad one.

I got ya. I kind of did that by swapping the injector from
cylinder one to cylinder two and two in to cylinder one.
Nothing changed when I did that. However while the car is
idling if I unhook the coil on cylinder one nothing happens. If
I unhook the coil in cylinder two the car dies out. Kind of the
same thing as the injectors only with the coils instead. I took
that to mean that cylinder one still wasn't firing. I will
check the injectors anyways just to be sure. Thanks for the
info.

Ok so I am back out messing with my car and I am at a loss.
Still doesn't seem to be running right. I pulled the plug out of
cylinder 1 and put it in the coil and cranked it over. It is
definitely getting spark now. Also when I pulled the plug it was
a little wet like some gas had been getting in there. I unhooked
each injector one at a time to see what that would do. When I
unhook 1 nothing changes. when I unhook 2, 3, or 4 it starts to
die out. If I unhook the coil for cylinder one nothing happens.
I am going to try 2,3,and 4 now and see what happens. Also the
whole time this is going on my wideband is stuck on 14.8. It
used to bounce all over the place before this. I did also get
the brand new harness and another ecu I picked up hooked up in
the car. It seems like I am making some progress but not sure
if I am missing something. Anyone have any ideas?

If I unhook any of the other three coils the car starts to die.
It is definitely running rich now. There is a fair amount of
black smoke coming out now.

Something is obviously wrong with cylinder one. Since your
compression test came back fine I would suggest your problem
lies in the injector or coilpack. Get a voltemeter, they're like
$20, and check voltage and ground to the sensors, and resistance
as well. If those two come back fine, your problem is
%100000000000 million trillion an air problem, either a boost
leak or MAF. Infact, you probably already looked over the
problem and thought there was nothing wrong.
