My step dad is a fab guy, has all brand new miller set up's.
He's been a welder by trade for the last 35 years. Does some
nasty tig work, watched him weld a soda can back together once.
Has built a few fuel cells and custom offroad bumpers and rocker
plates for trail rigs over the years. We have the ability to
bend up to I think 2 inch, maybe 2 1/2.
Here is an example of weld he just laid today

My question is. Is there any type of standards or specs for what
a cage needs to meet or be for drift events??

Yes, find a rule book for whoever holds the events and just go
off of that. Or go off of fd rule book.

in the works right now, this is the rough draft i guess you
could say, i have all the final measurements sent to a water
jet cutting company and to have a set cut out, and if it looks
good, ill have 10 sets ordered and will sell them if anyone is
interested. based it off my e36, but should be relatively easy
to fit to any hood. this will need to be welded on. if anyone
needs one welded in, i could do that aswell.

any have any tips for me? i got a lincoln weld pak a few month
back, its only a flux core welder, i can do the gas conversion
for about 100 i think. only used it a few times so far, but when
i went to weld i little piece of stainless to a small hole in my
chassis all the thing does is spit, i thought it may be a bad
ground but i made sure the piece i grounded to was clean and the
       weld area was clean
heres what it looks like, I'm not 100% sure on what the low/high
and 1/2 switches do, like what conditions call for what
settings, and it seems like every time i touch metal the wire
just burns off back to the tip, I'm trying to say about a half
       inch away.

Mike (or anyone else who knows the answer) is the cage in the
last pic considered FD spec? I ask because the rule book calls
out no more than 4 bends totaling a max of 180 degrees. Maybe
its just the picture but that definitely appears to be more than
       180. Or is this something that gets waived by tech regularly? I
have a cage I was looking at for cheap but decided against
       because of this very issue.

Warchol2, put gas on that welder ASAP. So much better than flux.
And try welding steal instead of stainless.

I couldn't agree more about the not welding stainless with flux
core wire (I don't think they make stainless wire in flux.) I do
quite a bit with flux with no problem but I have had a lot of
practice with it. Make sure if your welder is gas or gasless
that the polarity is correct inside, for flux it is backwards to
gas and you have to move the wires inside the welder (it should
tell you on the inside of the lid...) If its backwards it will
weld really shitty like there is no shielding.

ok thanks guys, i definitely plan to change to gas, i was just
wondering on why my flux core welds were so bad lol. ill get
more practice soon. I'm not really looking at making cages or
anything crazy. i just want to patch some holes, fab up some
brackets for things and some bolt on bash bars.
