What's DDoS?

We've been encountering a load of attacks recently, and I'm just
clearing up on what DDoS is, for those who have been wondering.
DDoS stands for distributed denial of service. It is basically
an attack on a website location or server by overloading it.
Here is an example;
If there was a particular website that a group of people/hackers
didn't like, then they would create a virus/trojan that infects
lots of pc's around the world by sending emails etc. This trojan
might not be detected by an antivirus since they normally stay
inactive till required and therefore the user of the infected pc
might not know the difference.
Then when loads of pc's have been infected, the person/group who
created the trojan send a signal telling all the computers that
are infected to try and connect to a particular server all at
the same time over and over again.
Now unless the website/server was very powerful that would
normally eventually cripple the server since it has so many
people trying to connect at the same time due to the trojan.
This means that anyone who actually wants/needs to connect to
the website/server cannot due to it being overloaded.
DDoS
D- Distributed (the trojan is distributed)
DoS - Denial of service (the server cannot provide a service
since it has been overloaded)
