       [Nyahs Cabin]

Private dwelling for the Lady Nyah.
Nestled from the elements in a nook close to the
Village, with a panoramic view of the
       coastline.
says to ALL: Grimm and i had spent most of the day outside
training near the cabin. We were practising side-by-side hunting
techniques, and his abilities to listen to my hand signals, and
his agility training. He was getting better and better each day
we went out and it felt like more than just a relationship
between a sleen and handler. i mean, it was difficult to think
of myself in such a role as a slave, but Grimm chose me. He was
the one who decided that i was worthy enough of teaching him.
Sleen were notoriously difficult to train and if you didn’t have
the backbone for it they could sniff it out and make your life
miserable. But if you were strong, they accepted you as
something akin to one of the pack and you became trainer. But
you had to work for it. You could never let your guard down. If
the sleen thought you were getting lazy they would
not-so-politely, snap at you to put you in your place again.
       Sleen were toothy like that.
The most important thing to happen during our excursion into the
woods, was Grimm being able to track and kill a deer on my hand
signals alone. This was very important. It meant he was able to
understand the signals i was giving; it meant he was able to
have the patience to wait when i told him to wait while the deer
was sniffing the air searching for his scent; it meant he was
paying attention when i gave him the go to attack. Not only
that, but he obeyed when i needed to tie the deer up to haul
back to the cabin, siting on his haunches quietly licking his
lips and watching me. i grinned, praising him profusely, and
pulled out a piece of dried jerky from my cloak and tossed it to
him while i had one of the thralls gut the deer and drag the
carcass away so it could be taken care of. i watched him to the
point of annoyance, Grimm mimicking my behaviour and the thrall
could not have been more unnerved or grateful to leave. i
chuckled and pet Grimm behind the ears as he panted with that
       sharp, toothy grin.

says to ALL: The next day we set out early, before the sun woke
up. It was cold and snowing; i wore leathers beneath my kirtle
and a thick shawl over the wool of my kirtle to keep warm, along
with a scarf over my face. My hands would suffer, but i could
bury them beneath the layers as i got cold. The plan was to keep
moving as much as i could with Grimm. He was going to hate it, i
knew, but if he didn’t learn this now, he wouldn’t want to do it
as he got older. Sleen were creatures of temperament, most
acclimated to where it was, they were born. But i had learned
with my Master that there were some things you could teach them
that were not imprinted on them before their birth if you
started as soon as possible. My Master had begun with his pup as
soon he’d been weaned and i’d gone with them. i remember the
little thing squawking and screeching like a foundling,
half-starved and missing his mother. i remember being bitterly
upset with my Master, accusing him of being heartless and cruel,
which he found amusing given his caste work was that of an
Assassin. But in my eyes humans, even a slave who is not thought
of as being much more than an animal, is vastly different from
an animal who cannot understand why you are doing what you are
doing to it, and why you have ripped it away from the warmth of
its’ mother and siblings. i was so very young, and naïve then. i
looked to Grimm wistfully as i finished getting ready and he sat
patiently waiting for me by the door. The snow was falling in a
thick, blanket and i was eager to step out the door and make the
first imprint with my boot, knowing in an ahn, or so, there’d be
no trace of me anywhere. i’d be a ghost.
The first inhalation of cold air took my breath away. i coughed
and blinked tears, that immediately turned to ice, away. Grimm,
followed me tentatively. Though he had seen snow before, this
was fresh stuff, still falling fast and furious and quicker than
he could lick them into his mouth. He frolicked around, kicking
up snow as he did so, looking half-crazed and happier than any
sleen aught to, and it made me laugh. In that ihn, i realised
why my Master wouldn’t leave Artemis with me when he left. Why
he told me that should anything happen to him that Artemis would
be sent to travel with him to the COD. My Master had led an
extremely solitary existence until i had come into it, and while
there were things i could share with him, experiences i could
have with him, in a way, Artemis was an extension of him. The
beast and the beast handler. The monster and the monster’s
keeper. i understood it. i looked at Grimm and i finally
understood it because when we were out hunting that deer, i felt
it in my blood. i felt his blood pumping through his veins; i
felt his adrenaline coursing through him as the excitement over
a kill filled him. i understood it because every time i’d held a
bow or knife and made the killing blow, felt the life’s blood
seep through my fingers, and watched the life drain away from
the prey’s eyes, i felt that surging thrill explode through my
veins. i just never knew if that made me the monster or the
       monster’s keeper.

says to ALL: Grimm was working hard to keep up. At full height,
from top of head to tail, he stood to mid-thigh on me. But i was
also a very petite slave, and to someone taller than me he would
be average pup-size, instead of the little, beast he was. The
snow was quickly deepening and now was up past his triceps. He
was half leaping as we tried to move faster than the snow was
building. i looked at him, my features obscured through the
scarf, snow-flakes in my lashes and my eyes gone a frost
coloured jade, wondering if i’d made a mistake taking this pup
out. i looked behind us at complete white-out conditions, unable
to even guestimate how long we’d even been out, how far we might
have managed to get in these conditions and i began to despair.
i was not only responsible for Grimm, but for myself.
Grimm turned to me and cocked his angled head to the side,
watching me with- well, the only adjective that was appropriate,
however human, was concern. Or perhaps it was something else
entirely and me, being the human, could only name it thus. In
any event, it was then that Grimm nudged me. And when i did not
move, trying to formulate our best course of action in my head,
he nudged me harder so that i toppled over into the snow. i
muttered a few choise obscenities at him, gaining my bearings
and dusting the snow off my arse, but before i could say
anything else he was bounding off leaving me in the snow dust,
but with a path to follow. There wasn’t time to do or say
anything. A sleen running was lightning fast even in the snow
and it was all i could do to keep up. i could see him just up
ahead turning right and seeming to disappear. For a split second
i panicked but as i closed the gap between us i saw it was a
cave mouth and i saw Grimm shaking the snow from his fur in
quick bursts. He looked at me and i looked at him, a raised a
brow and an annoyed quirk of lips that faded to a grin.
“Seems you’ve been holding out on me, Grimm.” He looked
satisfied. As though he’d taught something to the human. Well,
now that we were both education on one another i would set to
his training differently. He clearly understood me more than he
was letting on. But first, there was a need of a fire until the
snow subsided or we’d both freeze to death and even if we
didn’t, we might catch our deaths and either case, our Mistress
would be quite wroth with me. i went around gathering what
branches, twigs and leaves i could and then began the task of a
fire. It was an act of patience that was a testament to my
training and my spirit as a slave, because despite the many
failures, i kept on rubbing the stick into the other, over the
nest of dried leaves, blowing softly in cupped hands, until
finally! It caught. A tiny spark and puff of smoke that caught
the nest on fire and i would bring it to the larger bed of twigs
and branches and watch it go up in flames. The cave became cozy
and warm, and with a built-in updraft for the smoke to funnel
outward from, it wasn’t so smokey. i made a pallet for Grimm and
myself and laid down. Before i knew it we were both asleep.

says to ALL: i awoke to the weight of Grimm very nearly on my
chest. The weight of him making it difficult to breathe, but the
warmth of him welcome. The fire had gone out some time in the
night and with no one to take shift during the night, i slept
through and never tended to the fire. Carefully, i extricated
myself from beneath the sleen as he continued to sleep. It was
cold and my arms and legs were stiff from disuse doing the night
as the cold had settled into them. i groaned a little which
garnered me a one-eyed look from Grimm before he went back to
sleep. When i glanced outside the cave mouth it appeared that
slate-grey of winter, when you knew was going to snow all day
and you’d probably be penned within the great hall. Those days
were always rather glorious, with the Jarls regaling their tales
of adventure while drinking their weight in mead, or some days
they would entertain by telling stories of the Gods, which would
captivate me just the same. i huffed softly, which i was there
instead of here, even though i had chosen to come out hunting
with Grimm, i hadn’t chosen to pick a day we’d be snowed in.
Seemed counter-intuitive and all. i salvaged what i could to
make a fire from the inside of the cave mouth, but knew i’d need
to go outside and find some larger tree branches that i could
drag inside that would keep us warm, in case we were here
overnight again. i wrapped my scarf over my head and face,
leaving nothing but my eyes and then i headed out. i didn’t get
but 20 feet from the mouth of the cave to realise the drifts had
essentially snowed us in. My irritation and frustration were
beginning to bubble over, but none of it would help me in
getting out of this situation. i had little to keep Grimm and i
warm in the cave. It was going to start snowing again, and the
temperature was dropping. i had two choises: Attempt to get up
and over the snow drifts and figure out my way back to the cabin
or wait it out here. There might be a way back through the cave,
deeper within that would lead out on the opposite end of the
valley. But there was also no telling what is further down in
the cave. There could be animals deeper beneath hibernating that
i might disturb and without a weapon i was dead. Sleen pup or
not. As if on cue, the snow began to fall.
i sighed and turned back around heading toward the mouth of the
cave. Grimm stood there at its center regarding me with his cool
gaze as though he were my Master and i had just wandered off too
far without permission. i glared at him, hugging my arms trying
to keep warm and growled at him,
“What! What, Grimm? You brought me to this cave.” He snorted
under his breath and turned, lumbering back inside as i followed
him. As he sat on his haunches i prepared the fire again, with
whatever was left inside the cave that i thought could burn.
Leaves, twigs that were so dry i was pretty sure would burn to
ashes instantly, and a few solid branches that weren’t
desiccated. Once again, i started to rub the twigs but without
anything left to catch fire, nothing really was happening. Out
of desperation, i tore some of the hem of my kirtle; wool would
do nicely as a source of fuel for the fire. i sat there
patiently, the stick rubbing between my hand into the other one
carefully within the nest of wool, blowing softly. i prayed to
the Gods that we would get a fire. The cold could kill you
quickly out here and sometimes you wouldn’t even know it. You
would sink into a heavy-lidded sleep, and Death would be wearing
white, and carrying a deadly icicle blade. Before you knew it,
you would be lost. Just when i thought Grimm and i were going to
be doomed, the flutter of a spark! i blew on it ever so gently,
coaxing it to life until the scrap of the wool caught and a
flame glowed. i carried it carefully to our fire and laid it
amongst the branches and twigs and leaves. Once they caught, i
pondered this dilemma and wondered if my Mistress noticed my
absence yet and if she was worried. It hadn’t been my intent to
worry anyone. All i wanted to do was teach Grimm. i muttered and
       called Grimm to me.
“Alright Grimm, let’s do this. We need to see if we can find our
way out here. i know there was a way through back there. We’ll
find some branches along the way in case we can’t find our way
out. But we have no choise.” Grimm looked at me and i felt his
concern rather than saw it on his features. He bounded for the
back of the cave and behind what looked like a normal wall was
an opening, where a draft was sucking out the warmth from the
cave. i had to turn sideways to fit, but i managed to slide
through and entered and long, natural hallway that opened up
into a chamber that began to dip downward. It smelled dank and
went. i wondered if there was some kind of water source
somewhere. And eerily, as soon as i finished thinking it, Grimm
was snuffling at the ground with serious intent, searching for
       something.
“C’mon Grimm! You got it boy!” i encouraged him and applauded
his efforts. We came to this earth packed wall, where Grimm
began to dig. i felt the wall where he was furiously digging and
it was wet. Both the wall and the ground. i wasn’t sure where we
were in relation to the landscape outside with the snow. It was
cold and wet, but Grimm wasn’t letting it. And then, suddenly,
Grimm jumped back and so did i. The wall crumbled, and a spill
of water and snow and black dirt came tumbling to our feet. i
made the hand signal for him to halt and i stepped outside and
there was a creek, the mountain on the opposite side and
beautiful snow falling. i jumped up and down gleefully!
“You did it, Grimm! You did!”

says to ALL: Grimm turned his angle head toward me, snow still
falling so that he was blinking furiously to shield his eyes
from the onslaught of flakes and with his mouth open and all his
teeth showing, i could have sworn he appeared to be grinning.
“You’re a good boy, Grimm. I’ll have the kitchen Mistress fix
you a nice bowl of vulo gizzards when we get home.” He perked at
gizzards, knowing that word and i had to laugh.
“Alright, boy. First we need to find the cabin. Maybe still have
time get that deer.” The snow seemed to be relenting a little
and once we got further down the mountain, i suspected there
would be less of it. The amount of snow would make tracking more
challenging, but it wasn’t anything i couldn’t handle and
nothing that Grimm couldn’t handle. So, we began our trek back
down and headed toward the cabin.
i marveled at how much snow could change the landscape in just
48 ahns. It was a white wonderland, and if i’d not already been
familiar with the landscape in all seasons, it would have been
wretched for me to figure out which way to go. The sun was still
hidden behind the clouds, but it was working on coming out. The
snow was up to my knees and i was getting tired but Grimm
wasn’t. He was my motivator. He pulled me forward and i dragged
myself forward. He looked over his shoulder back at me and
grunted. i stopped there for a minute and hands on my knees and
panted. He nudged my face gently as if to say we gotta go. i
turned my face up to the sky and began to feel snow flakes
       again.
“Alright, Grimm.” And i pushed myself at a jog to hurry at his
pace. Before i knew it i could see the roof of the cabin. It was
amazing to see. i was touched with a surge of energy and passed
Grimm at my clip and he gruffed at me and shook his head. i
couldn’t help but laugh at him. By the time we got inside,
covered in snow, we nearly collapsed on the floor shivering. i
wasted no time getting a fire started in the cabin and collapsed
myself on the cushions with a heavy fur and Grimm at my feet.
       “Another day Grimm.”
