says to ALL: I was already more nervous than I’d ever been about
a dance. Well, that wasn’t exactly the truth. I hadn’t been this
nervous since my very first dance, which felt like a lifetime
ago. I was still very much a novice in all things slave and
under a considerable amount of pressure, given my pedigree. But
I was never bred for dancing. The fact I possessed any skill at
all, was a happy coincidence. However, this dance was causing me
a lot of anxiety and butterflies, the nearer I got to the date
of the dance I would be performing. It was a completely new
concept and Goreans were not known for their warm, welcoming of
change or the deconstruction of tradition, especially to
something as sacred, as the slave dance. But I was that slave
who would seek to turn tradition on its head, just because I had
the creative bent to do so. It would either be a success or a
failure.

says to ALL: My purpose for the dance was not out of arrogance.
There were many, many, other- more skillful dancers out there, I
was not special. But I thought it might be compelling and I knew
it would provoke those emotions that I often fought hard to bury
deep. As a slave, I knew these things were not mine to bury and
yet I had. The turbulence of my slavery, and my many occasions
of freedom, forced me to shove much of these emotions I felt
down deep, to a place where there was no chance that they would
escape. But I now understood that my healing would only be
complete when I permitted myself to purge these emotions, and
accept all that had befallen me. Once I’d done this, I would be
able to be that slave, I’d once been. Until then, I was living
half-lives and half-truths.

says to ALL: In addition to the emotion that was surfacing, that
I was needing to deal with and chorography into this dance,
there was the basic fundamentals of music and any props and of
course, something to wear. The slave attire was actually the
easiest part of this entire equation, knowing that Grainne would
make something. I had asked her during my working in her shop at
the fair, after I had negotiated for the Mistress Cooks cloak
and boots. She had actually seemed excited about it, looking
forward to my telling of the story and how it was going to be
played out, that she might design accordingly. Grainne was a
stickler for beauty as well as functionality and since this
would be a 4-5-part story, it was imperative that that my
costume allowed for the flow of the story in the easiest and
most aesthetically pleasing slave garment. I promised her that
as soon as I had it worked out in my head, she would be the
first person I would go to. This wasn’t entirely true. The first
was the musicians, which is where I was off to now.

says to ALL: The musicians were a lively group from Lydius, who
were known at the Fairs and also spent time in varied markets.
I’d first seen them in the Fair of En’kara, back when I was
still living in the Northern Forest Alone. I’d hitched rides
among the wagons destined for the fairs, with my satchel of
goods to sell and trade and that first Fair had gone rather
dismally. I was as broke towards the end of the fair as when it
had begun when one of their players noticed me loitering around
when they played and invited me to eat with them. They shared
their food and listened to my tale without judgment, proclaiming
I could be an entertainer if I chose and travel around with
them. I was young and stubborn, and well, a slave at heart so I
declined. But every fair I was able to attend after I’d
succeeded in my endeavors as Free, I dropped a pouch of coins
into their donation hat as a “thank you” for taking pity on a
displaced girl. I had heard they were in these markets and when
I found them, they greeted me warmly. They were in the middle of
performing taking a break for food and drink and I explained to
them my need.
“So you see..this could be a wild disaster, but I would so very
much like it if you played. You know much of my story and what
you don’t know, I’ll fill in the blanks. It will be in 4
movements and…” I finished telling them my idea and as they
broke bread, and drank wine, discussing among themselves if this
was worthwhile, I knelt nervously waiting. Finally, the tall and
gangly man that had noticed me that first time looked to me now
and gave a nod of his head.
“We will be there, dagger. As payment, we ask that you ask your
Mistress if we could have some of the verr wool we understand
she is so famous for? That would be a tidy payment indeed.”
“I will ask her, Master. Thank you so much.”
