       Looking at history exercise

       One way we worked with a congregation with its history was to
       divide the people into decades of the church. Whenever a person
       began their journey wih the congregation was the decade group
       they would offer input for that particular decade. That group
       would answer questions about decade.
       Some of the questions we asked were:
       Who were the pastors and leaders of the church in that decade?
       What were the highlights and accomplishments in this decade?
       What were the rough patches of that decade?
       What were the lessons learned from that time period?
       Always allow people to have differing visions of what was good
       and not so good - it will allow for the groups to have some self
       realization of different perspectives and journeys of the same
       events.
       For example during one time period a decade group was split down
       the middle about the highlights. Most of the men felt like the
       male pastor grew leadership. However the women of that time felt
       like they were left out of leadership. It offered some
       perspective for both groups and lenses itself to conversation.
