Laying worker, queenless hive

When checking your hive have a focus in mind. Don't just open
and see lots of bees. First, are there eggs, do the eggs in the
cell look right, are there more than one egg per cell, is it in
the right place in the hive. I had what I thought was a
queenless hive, put a new queen in, 2 days later went in hive to
release her, and I found eggs in 2 frames, looked right, one egg
per cell,etc. I inspected 3 boxes and released the queen. Why?
Because there were several frames with empty cells, only 2-3
frames with scattered eggs, not uniform, and a few eggs on the
side of cell. IF, there was a queen, she was failing, the hive
had made queen cells as well. There was not any various stages
of larvae. I suspect I had a laying worker and I procrastinated
at identifying the problem early. Sorry for the lengthy post,
but you have to decide what to look for before you open your
hive.

Update on hive status. I released the queen and watched the
bees' reaction toward her. They were grooming her and trying to
clean the green marking off. The bees were not being aggressive
toward her as she moved around the frame. Yeah!!!

I agree!!! You've got to have a goal in mind and know what you
are looking for and/or at BEFORE opening the hive. Otherwise,
you are just killing bees.
I like getting someone else involved when I get into my hives.
Sure, I can do it myself. However, I can learn more with
someone else and/or I can help someone else learn more. I
really liked having the small group we had get into the Suchs'
hives.

Val, how many days did you leave the Queen in the hive, in her
box, before you released her? I'm curious because I have had
issues with laying workers killing the New Queen after She has
been in her box in the hive for three or four days. I'm
wondering how long the pheromone lasts that makes the Laying
worker hive believe it is "Queen Right".
