Installing MC12

This post is very much a work in progress, but might help
somebody nonetheless. What I really ought to do is rip up my
MC12 and re-install (making notes), but given that I'm not going
to do that at the moment, observations of the installation
process will be welcome!
How to install Spectrum Software Micro-Cap 12 in Windows 7/64
- Download from
HTML [url=http://"
HTML http://www.spectrum-soft.com/download/download.shtm"]http://www.spectrum-soft.com/download/download.shtm[/url]<br
/>(broken link – see footnote*), the one you want is "Micro-Cap
12" "12.2.0.4" "CD ( 58M )". This pulls down everything you
need for a fresh install (executable, libraries, user guide,
reference guide), but is not appropriate for updating an
existing installation (there will never be another update).
Ignore the line marked with a red dot - that's the Japanese
language version.
- The result of the download is a file "mc12cd.zip": unzip it to
a new folder.
- Run (double-click) setup.exe - this installs the suite into
Windows. Choose the 32-bit version. I installed both 32-bit
and 64-bit versions, but the 64-bit version has many menu items
greyed out (which is not the case in the 32-bit installation).
- Go into menu File > Paths... and set up sensible options,
otherwise some output (eg a generated netlist) will land in the
default C:\MC12\DATA folder instead of your project directory.
- In the Help menu there are many Sample Circuits and Demos.

Micro-Cap 12 in Linux
Being a Windows application, Micro-Cap is not intended for
installation in Linux - but many Windows programs can be made to
run in Wine (a translation wrapper which converts Windows
interactions into Linux interactions). I'm not a Linux expert,
but the general process is to start Wine and then run the
install from within.
I have tried this in Linux Mint 20, and it appeared to install
and run, but it does not run properly. I could do nothing
useful with MC12 within Wine within Linux. Whether an expert
could configure Wine the right way to work properly is another
matter.
All is not lost for Linux users of course, it should be possible
to set up a Windows virtual machine (which is a complete Windows
installation running inside Linux) and run MC12 within that.
Running a Windows virtual machine requires another Windows
licence just as if you had installed it on another physical
machine.
