       What's in a name?
By: Kathy Rayner Date: April 19, 2018, 6:58 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Tell us how/why you picked your chicken's names.
Most of our chickens have names that have something to do with
their breed... ie... Dottie the Wyandotte, Barnie the
Barnevelder, Barbie the Barred Rock, Della the Delaware...
But... then there is Spike - she is a Delaware that we put under
Dottie when she went broody. Spike was the feistiest little
chick. She was rebellious. She had a little evil look about
her. So, Travis named her after one of the Gremlins. She is
still a little feisty and now has about 1 inch spurs. She can
run a duck off in a heartbeat but she has not made it to the top
       of the pecking order.

       1. Mr. Brown- got him from a couple with last name Brown.
       2. Mr Dottie- well I thought he was a she. So I named her/him
after a lady I worked for in college.
       3. Jack Sparroo - because he looks like jack sparrow off of
       Pirates Of the Carribian.
       4. Elizabeth swan- she is Jack Sparroos wife/girlfriend and so
I renamed her to be Elizabeth swan off of Pirates Of The
       Carribian
5.Mama- she is the best broody hen and mama
She has raised all of my barnyard mixes
       6. Star - golden laced wyndotte speckled like a Star? Lol
       7. BfG - black friendly giant
       8. Smokey - barn yard mix that has all different shades of grey
       and looks like smoke.
       9. Fancy- she's a fancy girl
       10. Sunny - orange and bright like the sun
       11. Buzzy - naked neck hen that looks like a buzzard.
       12. Pip pip- naked neck. Name came from the book , Great
       expectations.
       13. Lynyrd skynyrd- just looks like a old school rocker.
       14. Willie Nelson- lynyrd skynyrd's daughter. Wanted to keep
into the musician family. And not to mention she kinda looks
       like Willie Nelson lol.
       15. Red - naked neck previously named but I know why. He is very
       Red! Lol
       16. Elsa- fluffy and white like snow.
       17. John Henry- my gobbler named after the African American folk
       hero.. a steel driving turkey
       18. Pearl she's my hen turkey and looks as beautiful as a pearl.
       19. Bon jovi- a Rhode island red reminds me of bon jovi and the
color of old rock n roll and a bleeding red maroon heart( sounds
       crazy I know)
       20. Rose - my other RIR. Looks like the maroon red rose.
       That's my flock!

Lol sure do. I think naming them is one of my favorite parts.
People ask, do you seriously have names for all your chickens?
       Why Yes!

What a great idea for a topic Kathy!! Here are mine:
       1. Raylan: Gold Laced Orp Rooster, named after the lead
       character on the series Justified.
       2. Elvis Wayne: Silver Laced Orp Rooster, Initially named after
Wayne Dyer (one of my favorite authors) but when he was very
young I noticed that his little body was always ridiculously hot
so I started singing to him, "Hunka hunka of burnin' love" and
the name Elvis Wayne was born. I think it makes him sound like
       he his from Mississippi. :)
       3. Ava: Gold Laced Orp hen, named after Ava on the series
       Justified.
       4. Winona: Gold Laced Orp hen, named after Winona on the series
       Justified.
       5. Mags: Blue Orp hen, named after Mags on the series Justified.
       6. Snow Peanut: Splash Orp hen, she is named after my beloved
Peanut. Snow is so much like the original Peanut that I wanted
to honor her memory by working her name into Snow's name.
Because of her coloring we initially called her the "Abominable
Snow Peanut" and since have just shortened it to Snow.
       7. Blue Belle: Blue Orp hen.....because she is blue. :)
       8. Sylvia: Silver Laced Orp hen...because everyone with a SL Orp
or Wyandotte has to have a Sylvia.
       9. Louise: Silver Laced Orp hen...named after another favorite
       author, Louise Hay.
       10. Dot Dot: Splash Mottled Orp hen, because she had a big ole
dot on the top of her head.
       11. Daisy Doreen: Splash Mottled Orp hen, she reminds me so much
of my sweet girl Daisy who passed last year from Leukemia and
the Doreen is another author I like, Doreen Virtue.
Snow's six babies..... not sure yet. We have 2 black chicks, 1
       Blue, and 3 SL

I guess I should check out "Justified" to see who these
characters are that deserve to be tagged to your beautiful
       chickens!
