Can anyone let me know the best way to find out if my barred
rock chicks are male or female?

Many breeds can be sexed shortly after they hatch. After
that... ??? With most chickens it is hard to tell by just
looking at them; it is at best just a guessing game. As lippant
as it sounds...sometimes you have to wait to see if it crows or
lays an egg! :)
We had two Delawares from chicks. Within a month one of them
looked totally different (more rooster like...we named it
Spike). It was larger, comb was bigger and started growing
nubbs/spurs. Yep we had us one hen and one rooster. But, with
my belief in the crow or egg factor, we waited. It was obvious
there was a lot of difference and now the spurs were about 3/8"
long and growing. As they reached maturity one of the squatted
when I approached her. WHAT? Within a week or so they both
started laying. One still looks like a rooster and her spurs
are almost an inch long...yet "she" is a great layer.
That is why I am a firm believer in waiting on the crow or egg
to show up! :)
