Yes ma'am!! Please get a brooder table. There are a couple of
different kinds but I have the Brinsea Ecoglow here:

You can borrow mine if you want to. Sue Lee used it to keep her
babies warm but they are out in the coop now so she is going to

Thank you, Angela for your kind offer, but I have already
ordered one from Amazon! In for a penny, in for a pound ! I
think I remember I am supposed to use pine shavings and puppy
pads or paper towels? I have cedar shavings but I think I
remember those are not good for chicks. I wish I had taken more
notes during that meeting! On another subject: this morning, I
found an egg with no shell... yikes! They have free choice
oyster shells and I put extra in their feed today. I am pretty
sure it is my EE who stopped laying for a while. This is the
first egg in a couple of months. I'm pretty sure she ate some
of the oyster shells this morning. I am worming them for the
second time with that Backyard Chicken Health kit from TS and
wondered if that is related. Is there anything else I should
do? I was thinking I could get some yogurt. They won't eat egg
shells. Thank you, so much for your support and education!

Susan,
REMOVE the cedar shavings immediately!
Remove the chicks/chickens first, remove the cedar shavigns then
wash everything. Cedar shavings can cause severe respiratory
damage, even death to both chicks and adults! [quote

Yep! You may as well invest in getting all of your equipment
out of the way. :) I have had the same Brinsea for years so it
will last a long time. When you get it home, practice adjusting
the table up and down to get it loosened up so you won't be
fiddling with it when you have chicks that need to be under it.
You have to hold your mouth just right when you first start
adjusting the table height on those things :) but they work
beautifully and are built to last.
A soft shell every now and then is normal but since your girl
has not been laying it could be sign that she has a problem in
the reproductive department. You are taking the right steps to
make sure she is getting enough free choice calcium. If I were
you I would not add extra to the feed, the reason being is that
you don't want the other hens who are not having problems to
develop kidney problems from too much calcium. You can also give
offer some phosphorus in the form of bone meal to your laying
challenged hen as both phosphorus and calcium are needed to make
the shell.

a few years ago that kept laying soft shells regardless of diet
so I put her on this and her eggs hardened right up. WARNING
ABOUT STROMBERGS'S website....don't start looking unless you
have an hour! lol That website is Chicken Disney World.
I am not trying to be the harbinger of doom but I feel I need to
let you know that your girl might have a reproductive issue that
will eventually lead to internal laying. Internal laying is
pretty common and is the precursor for conditions such as Egg
Yolk Peritonitis. For now though you are doing all you can do.
Just keep up the good work and keep monitoring her eggs. She
might snap out of it especially with the Ropa in her water. And
remember we are here to answer any questions for you. If there
is something pressing, you can always text me for a faster
answer. Also, you should be getting your Chicken Health
Handbook today right?? I promise you will sit down with that
thing and when you get up you will have a chicken health
education. :)
Do you make your own milk kefir? If not I will be happy to
share my grains with you. I give it my girls about 3 or 4 times
a week and they have the prettiest poops and hardest eggs you
can imagine. As a matter of fact, I dropped one on the carpet
yesterday from about 4 ft and it didn't break. The egg that is
not the poop! lol
Yes, you are correct about the cedar shavings, do not use them.
They contain all sorts of things that are irritating to the
respiratory system of chickens. I always use that spongey
rubber maid shelf liner with several layers of paper towels for
the first week..week and a half in my brooder. After the chicks
have established that they know what their food is you can put
pine shavings in the brooder. Bless their little hearts they
can eat pine shavings when they are a few days old because feed
gets spilled in the shavings and they do not know not to eat it.

Not to worry. You read what I typed, but that's not the whole
story. I have cedar shavings but they are still sealed up in
their bag. I actually use aspen shavings in the nests for
bedding, that has no scent whatsoever. I have been using that
for close to a year without any problems. The only time they go
into the nest is to pay their rent. They free range all day and
roost at night. I have read about how fantastic hemp is for
bedding but you can't get it anywhere around here and the
shipping is crazy expensive.

Susan, I neglected to comment on the Aspen shavings. Those are
fantastic! As a matter of fact one of the first things I was
told when I had sick chickens with my first flock was to take
them off of pine shavings just in case and put them on Aspen.
Do you use Aspen for your rabbits? You are a good chicken
momma. I have a feeling you will be teaching us a thing or too
in the near future. :)

Actually, I haven't gotten rabbits yet. We have decided we want
purebred, pedigreed, Standard Rex. Not easy to come
by...especially in Mississippi. I think there is someone who
raises them near Pensacola. I have been waiting to finish the
rabbitry. We still need to build and install the sun/rain
awnings. When I say "we" need to build and install, I mean
Henrie! LOL I'm pretty sure the only time rabbits need bedding
is to build a nest. The guy I get rabbit manure from uses hay.
The doe uses that in combination with fur she pulls off her
body. I got cages with drop down nest boxes for added safety.
Another learning curve. I'm a glutton for punishment!
I did get that chicken health book. Man oh man... there is a
lot that can go wrong! Thanks again, for all of you help.

Keep us posted on the rabbit raising. I would like to try my
hand at that in the future as well. You can give me advice on
how to do all of that.
You are welcome for the help. That is why we are here. You are
such a joy, I feel like we are chicken soul sisters. :)
