       Rats in coop

Thank you for everyone's help on this. I have 6 ladies who are
great layers. However they have visitors in the form of rats.
These unwanted guest have made themselves at home by digging
into the ground inside the coop and creating homes. I have
tried several bait traps (which the ladies can not get into) but
these guest are not eating their treats. How do I get rid of
them? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My first suggestion is don't leave any food lying around. If you
give continuous food, pick it up at night and store in a metal
garbage can or take inside your house.
I have also tried traps but the only ones I have found that
worked are the old--fashioned wood snap traps,(worked for
       while) with pb for bait.
Also I bought the TomCat bait chunx from TSC. They worked and
only found a dead body or two to dispose of. I put the chunx up
in the rafters and behind things that the hens could not get to.
Different things work for different ppl. Let us know how it
       goes.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Karen has provided some good
       info.
Since this is a "predator" type problem...I am going to move
this tread to that section. Thanks!

Thanks for the help! Someone also suggested placing moth balls
on the ground around the outside of the coop. Would this harm
       the ladies?

I don't think so. I would not put them inside the coop. It
could be worth a try. Just make sure they cant get to them! I
have built several 5 gallon bucket traps for people. The type
that uses a rotating bottle across the top and a little water in
the bottom of the bucket with a couple drops of dish soap.
There are a number of designs on YouTube that show how they are
made. Like everything else, some folks have great success with
them, some...not so much. The bottle must rotate easily and
       freely!
