A Visit to Dr. Erak with photos :)
By: Angela Fore Date: February 11, 2018, 2:12 pm

[size=12pt] A couple of weeks a go I noticed that one of my Blue
Orpingtons, Mags, was having runny poops with lime green urates.
She gets homemade kefir about 3x a week so I knew that she was
getting enough good bacterial. I did some research and found
that lime green urates can indicate a bacterial infection so I
rooted around in my stash of chicken drugs and found some
Metronidazole that my previous vet had prescribed for an
intestinal problem another chicken had last year. I only had
enough to give it to her for 4 days but sure enough her poops
firmed up a bit and the urates changed from green to a soft
yellow. A few days off of the Metronidazole and she was right
back where she started so I knew it was time for an official
       visit to see Dr. Erak.
After a thorough physical examination and a fecal exam as well,
Dr. Erak found no signs of parasites or anything from the
physical exam that could be causing the runny poop. He agreed it
was most likely a bacterial issue which is why she responded
initially to the Metronidazole. He suggested a full course of
Flagyl (generic name for Metronidazole) at the proper dosage and
the addition of another antibiotic called SMT (which I had on
hand) as well. I am happy to report that she is on her new
       medication and is improving.
I cannot recommend Dr. Erak and his staff enough. Not only do
you have the peace of mind that comes from a proper diagnosis
and the dispensing of proper medication but he and his staff are
so kind that it makes for what could be a stressful experience
for your chicken less so. As a matter of fact, I think Mags
actually enjoyed her visit! :) His pricing is reasonable as
well. For this visit my total bill was 77.00. The breakdown is
as follows: 45.00 exam, 15.00 Flagyl, 17.00 Fecal Examination

Glad to hear Mags is in the mend! :) I know we don’t like
seeing one of our girls feeling bad!

You know I can't help myself.... Are you giving your girls
Colloidal Silver? That would also kill the bad bacteria. :)

I AM!!!! They get Silver and Kefir!! About a month ago I
started to give them Silver a couple of times a week (on a piece
of bread) and they have been getting Kefir 3 times a week ever
since you gave me those awesome grains. Everyone has beautiful
poops but Mags. Bless her heart she has a chronic situation I am
afraid. When she was about 6 months old I noticed this same
poop behavior but after a few days it would clear up and she
returned to normal. She is 2.5 now and it happens more and more
frequently. So I decided to just go ahead and succumb to the
heavy duty antibiotics since she is not laying. She was better
over the weekend but this morning everything was watery again.
That could be from her drinking the standing water from the yard
though. YUCK!!! Would giving her the Silver daily be ok? I
have been giving it to her on a soaked piece of bread about the
size of a quarter. Should I be giving her more than that for a
       chronic situation?

You can't overdose her on Colloidal Silver. If you can isolate
her and give it to her on soaked/drippy bread that is an easy
       way. :)

Well, today was day 3 in a row of giving Mags an entire piece of
bread soaked in Colloidal Silver. Her poops looked solid this
afternoon. YAY!!! I am looking forward to seeing how they are
       first thing in the morning.
