Fowl River Chicks say Hello
By: Susan Lee Date: February 7, 2018, 3:20 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi from South Mobile County. I’m Susan Lee (aka) Sue. I have
had chickens for a little over a year now and have been a full
member since I went to my first BREED SHOWCASE in 2017. I had
wanted them for so long and wish I could’ve gotten them even
sooner. Having chickens in the yard was a major discussion in
our home. We came to a mutual acceptance on how we can all live
together happily with setting up a few people chicken
boundaries.
I have eight hens and one rooster and five 1week old chicks. I
have a mixture of different breeds. Still deciding my favorite
breeds but their like children, I love them all.
My flock 1 black Cochin Rooster, 8 hens; a Turken, Buff
Orphington Barnevelder, Rhode Island Red, Salmon Faverolle, Blue
Easter Egger, White Leghorn, and Cuckoo Maran.
My White Leghorn hatched 10 babies in the fall and was a great
mommy. They graduated to new homes but it was exciting watching
them grow with the flock. My Leghorn integrated them into the
flock immediately; it was so easy!
I just purchased five new babies from St Elmo; silver laced
Cochin, white Cochin, golden laced Wyandotte, and 2 Black
Australorps.
My chickens have a coop with an enclosed Run, however they
free range during the day. I do lock them up at night, if the
weather is really bad or I have to be out of town for an
extended period of time. I do utilize a awesome friend who
happens to be a pet sitter ( specializes in chickens) when I am
out of town for more than a couple of days.
Since I’m new to a backyard chickens I’m experimenting with
all types of set ups and adjusting where needed and leaning some
things the hard way. We have automatic waterers and
feeders(great decision) and working on automatic doors.
I am honored to be on the BOD. I am learning so much as a full
member of the club, club meetings and making so many new
friends. I’m looking forward to sharing my successes and
failures with anyone looking to add backyard chickens and
continuing to learn more from the many experts in our club.

I think loaves of your bread would be a fantastic door prize. I
would definitely ask to be included in that drawing. :)
