Lydia looks the man over, somewhat impressed and alarmed, though
not to sure as to why she feels alarm...
"The pleasure is all mine, Stephen. I'm not sure if you
overheard this or not, but I am in search for a job. My love for
literature and learning are quite immense, and I have yet to
look in a book since I've arrived in New Orleans." She pauses
and looks over to Clark. "Oh, to answer your last question, you
are Ptah, the deity of Memphis."
Lydia smiles once more and waits eagerly for Stephen's reply,
       hopeful for a job.

“Well, you seem eager, so I will not care too much about your
other traits, even if you outsmarted our local knowledge junkie.
Sadly our day shift is full so you will have to work nights
only.” Stephen replies with a smile and a wink.
“You can start immediately actually. I just bought a rather
large shipment of books that I cannot read. Clark is good with
hieroglyphs though, so he can guide you in deciphering them.”
Stephen points to a few teetering towers of tombs next to the
stairs, all of which look leather bound and at least two
centuries old. “as far as hours go, come when you want leave
when you want, but this task should take only a few weeks so get
it done by then, and you can work here as long as you want.”
“As far as payment goes, 1K a week so earn it" he says in a off
handed but meaningful way. " And I do not provide any health
benefits, besides rescue medicine” his eyes dart tellingly at
Clarks neck “if you are in dire need or it at some point or
       another.”
“By the way, do you like to work on or off the books? I can tell
you have been dead…. A few times.”

Lydia considers the offer, quite grateful for the opportunity.
"That sounds wonderful. As for being on or off the books, that's
undetermined. Well, I guess I could be on the books. Why the
       hell not?"

"Good, just bring in a social security card, photo ID, and birth
certificate next time you come in. Do not fret if you don;t have
them, I know a guy who can do them cheep."
Looking to Clark as he heads to the door "Can you show her the
ropes, what tools to use, what trinkets to avoid touching, and
       where the traps are."
"And it was a pleasure meeting you, I have to run an errand for
a moment I should be back within the hour. By the way, you can
call me Stephen" He says with a smile as the jingle of the bells
above the shop door with his departure. "oh and if you see a
bald tattooed fellow doing odd things, just make act like what
ever he is doing is normal."
Clark puts his magic cards away, and asks "So Lydia, a couple of
notes. The glass sharps you find in corners are there on
purpous, so don't move them, but cleaning is not really on our
duties list. If a book makes noise, it is probably best not to
touch it, and if you see something move in the corner of your
eye, pretend it did not catch your attention."
He smile his normal goofy smile, "Now lets dig into those
books." He lifts two onto the counter.
"So tell me about your self."

Lydia grabbed the other book, taking in the information she was
given and joins Clark. "Well, their's not much to tell, really.
I've traveled lots with Jessika, a good friend of mine, and our
travels together has led me here. I'm hoping to become a bit
more independent, and thus, I am here." Lydia looks up and
       smiles. "What about you Clark?"

"Well I grew up way north of here, but in a city that could
match the populace of just the french quarter. I did not know
what to do with my life, so I went to college."
Clark opens the first book and takes out phone, a spiral and
       makes some notes.
"I met up with Stephen during my trip to Egypt for a graduate
       school summer class."
marking down some more notes "Cryptology by the way."
"Well after I found him... or he found me? He offered me a
scholarship if I agreed to work with him after grad school. I
agreed not really knowing just how many fringe benefits this gig
would carry.." adding with a wide, dorky smile.
He scribbles notes for a moment.
       "So why more independent?"

"Why more independent? Well, some of us need to grow up, in one
       way or another, right?"
Lydia continued flipping through her book, trying to make sense
of the hieroglyphics before her when a sigh escaped her.
       "That sounds stupid, huh?"

Clark seems to be a little slow in response from a mix of
multitasking the translation and the THC binding to the chemical
       receptors in his head.
"no, not stupid at all. I think stupid would be not realizing
that one does need to grow up. I sometimes think I need to grow
up a little, but then I remember how childish all the "grown
ups" are. so personal question: Who told you that you needed to
       grow up?"
Seeing the energy flowing between her and the book as a muddled
affair, Clark states "By the way I have a book on shelf 36D
third from the left. it has a reference table for hieratic
scrips you might want to check out. although this particular set
of books have a variation of the more commonly known set of
glyphs, I am sure it would still be helpful."

Lydia stands up and proceeds to the designated bookshelf,
pondering what Clark had said. After grabbing the book, she
returns to her seat and starts again.
"Well, it wasn't anyone specifically telling me to grow up, but
rather an event in my life that opened my eyes. I had a big
responsibility, and because I wasn't mature enough, a lot of
people suffered..." Lydia paused, realizing what she had said.
She looks up from the books and over to Clark.
"You're REALLY easy to talk to. How do you do that?" Lydia
smiles in a half joking manner, wondering if she had said too
       much...

Clark see's the energy strands between Lydia and himself grow
tense as some small amount of worry and even smaller amounts of
hope build during the last few statements coming from her end.
He notices the need for some fostering of trust to strengthen
       the bonds.
"I get that a lot. I think its the hair." Clark strikes a face
that would be befitting on a 12 year old's "duck-face" facebook
post. Breaking into a smile, "I am sorry you had to endure that
though, and sorry to those who suffered."
after working on the papers for a moment "so beyond redeeming
the demons of your past, what do you look forward to in life?"
