Some mostly meaningless thoughts about each game from this
region today...
Texas Tech & Butler: I don't think Chris Holtmann is exactly a
great coach (maybe about a 6 on a 1-10 scale of goodness) but
they are at least 6 points better than Tech just by showing up.
Wouldn't be shocked if Kellen Dunham went for 25.
Iowa State & Iona: Iona would be wise to run a 2-3 zone that I
believe they already deploy for a few possessions each game;
Iowa State averaged 9-27 (33.3%) from 3 against primarily zone
defenses, going 2-3 on the season.
Virginia & Hampton: Poor Hampton.
Purdue & Little Rock: Strength vs. strength. Little Rock will
win the TO battle by a 4+ margin but can they keep Purdue from
running up a 10+ edge in rebound margin? If so, they'll win.
Utah & Fresno State: Bad matchup for Utah and this is the best
candidate for a 14 over 3 this year. Utah doesn't force TOs;
Fresno doesn't commit them. Fresno ranks in the 89th percentile
nationally in forcing TOs; Utah ranks in the 57th percentile in
preventing them. Utah doesn't foul, though. Game relies almost
entirely on if Marvelle Harris gets into foul trouble or not;
Fresno is 5-7 when he finishes with 4 or 5 fouls and 20-2
otherwise.
Seton Hall & Gonzaga: On surface level, not actually a great
matchup for Gonzaga (they don't force TOs which is a massive
issue against a Seton Hall team that bleeds the ball away), but
I struggle to see how Seton Hall can contain both Wiltjer and
Sabonis without hacking away. Seton Hall is 15-0 when allowing a
KenPom Free Throw Rate of 31.8% or less; they're 10-8 otherwise.

I picked Purdue to go to the Final Four, and I still believe I
made the right pick. This was arguably the worse officiating:
Shoshi of UALR had his right foot on the line, yet they gave him
the 3-point. At the final seconds, UALR clearly fouled Purdue
but they not call it. Refs. stop the game for further inspection
of a lot of stuff, but not that? Pathetic. They want UALR to win
to complete the idiotic "back-to-back little conference upset".
Here's an example (not counting Ivy League):
Ohio Valley:
2010 - 13 seed Murray State
2011 - 13 seed Morehead State
2012 - 6 seed Murray State (but this one was not much of an
upset)
CAA:
2011 - 11 seed VCU (though they were at-large)
2012 - 12 seed VCU
Atlantic Sun:
2013 - 15 seed FGCU
2014 - 14 seed Mercer
Sunbelt:
2015 - Georgia St.
2016 - UALR
Now I have to factor that bullshit?

i hear your pain... i had them winning a couple... problem is
they didnt deserve it.. how the F do you let LR take a 3pt
from ANYWHERE when ahead by 3 with 15 seconds left.. terrible
coaching decision to not wrap up ballhandler before he get in
shooting position.. then, to make matters worse.. tied with
16 seconds to go in first OT, perdue CASUALLY walks the ball up
to half court and calls timeout at 11 seconds, wasting precious
time.. then they get the ball in, and try to go one on one with
lots of dribbling?? right, he got shut off, and then threw up
the brick of bricks that barely hit the backboard.. absolute
joke .. they deserved to lose in double OT

I will never trust Purdue again. Aside from that, the only
logical team to go to the Final Four is Michigan State. But then
again, just like Purdue, their bad turnover margin may get the
best of them (I actually pick Gonzaga over MSU on the sweet
sixteen). I have ZERO confidence that Iowa State will knock off
Virginia. My hope, for the sake of my 200th ranking rule, that
Butler pull the upset. And have Butler vs. Michigan St. on the
elite eight.

I had completely forgotten that Purdue chunked a 7 point lead
away to Cincy last year in the final 48 seconds. I can't imagine
actually being a Purdue fan.

So...anyone's brackets still alive?
Couldn't be more excited for MTSU - I grew up 45 minutes away
and know about a hundred people who attended. Great,
immeasurable win.

Had MSU in the Final Four....like a lot of people. Had them
losing to UNC.
Never thought that MSU team would go out like they did.

Not a big bust for me. I had MSU up to the sweet sixteen (losing
to Gonzaga). Two reasons why:
1. Their atrocious turnover margin.
2. They need one more player on the frontcourt. Outside
Costello, they didn't have anyone.
Looks like Izzo took the bribe, never thought he would be
involve, but money trumps all. No other possible explanation can
validate this loss. You can say that both teams were underseeded
(and they were), but its more of an excuse. Green Bay should've
been on that slot and Middle Tenn should've been a 14 seed at
worse due to their conference status (C-USA is a
mini-powerhouse). But again, excuse. I like the bribery reason.

NEW RULE: If a low-major team has a leading scorer that is
either funny-looking or biracial, let's pick them to pull the
upset.
