Overrated Manga and Anime
By: Orchid Date: July 19, 2016, 11:11 pm

I wanted to know about how other people feel about a Manga and
anime that they think is overrated. Everyone here is very
critical and have deep thoughts about one thing and I like
seeing that. It's good to see a forum really think about these
things.
There are rules. No big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece) or Sword
Art Online. I'm sure everyone knows about those ones.

and of course the four you already mentioned. Then again, I'm
someone who kind of needs my space and my own time to come up
with my own opinion about things. The more I see something
hyped, the more I tend to think "oh, great, if this many people
love it, then they appeal to a more general audience and it
likely isn't up to my tastes." It doesn't necessarily mean the
shows are bad, per se, but rather that with a large fanbase I
assume that the target audience just isn't me.

Durarara is one of the ones I find most overrated. Characters
are just designed in such a boring way and void of life. It's an
interesting concept of characters interacting with each other in
a Web chat and not all of them knowing who is who. Another is
how each one has their own story going on all at once.
But what this show fails most is character motivations and it
likes to build up to something. That something ending up to
being just one big series of coincidences. But the show makes it
seem like it's leading to one big send off that the characters
are aware is going to happen.

I haven't seen all of durarara. It kind of passed me as I was
having more things to do. But I remember it being very good.
I think Witch Craft Works is another overrated manga. It just
moves too fast for me.

We are working on the idea that to be overrated it has to be
very popular and not that good, right?
With Attack on Titan it seemed to have a fresher idea and was
one of the better ones that came out at that point (Sure it was
no Stein's Gate, but it was still good)
Tokyo Ghoul. I have the first season and it is Shinji from NGE
whining his way through the whole thing. I have no idea how this
series is liked let alone popular (Well OK there are people who
will love anything with "vampires" but still..)
I did not know Firy Tail was that popular. It seemed like
generic shonen to me.
I have only seen pics and people ohing and ahing over One Punch
Monk. Is it just "baddest man alive" shonen again (taken in the
Kenshin/Vash direction yet again)?
Are there any super popular sports anime?
For being one of the greatest shojo series every made, Fushigi
Yûgi is horrifyingly bad, and it was when it came over.
Now I need to go look at my collection and try to remember which
titles I wanted to punch someone for recommending.

I also think Bakuman is overrated. It had a really good
interesting concept and it slowly lost its touch.
It went fro. An interesting idea to completely typical and
Shonen. The running gag that the chatacters had manga in their
lineage grew very old. And of course the male characters acted
like complete Shonen and the female characters were turned far
more stereotypical than necessary.

The thing I think is most interesting about Attack on Titan is
its in-your-face commentary about Japanese morality and sexual
repression.

I haven't read enough attack on Titan. I decided to follow just
the anime because sometimes anime tell the story better (is that
crazy?).
I know this might sound crazy too, but I think a lot of shows on
adult swim didn't click with me. I was rewatching Trigun because
of the movie and it seemed very stale and dragged on a long
time.
Vashon the stampede just looked over the top to me.
