A "heat system"

I'm positive DeAngelus remembers both MangaRaiders and
OneMangaForums and how moderators would dictate and control
people rather than allowing members to be free. There was a time
when members would have the most ridiculous outbursts and no one
would do a thing. In fact, people acted as if that was a normal
reaction. These two forums (especially OMF) didn't necessarily
care about improvement, they only cared about making sure they
keep their members happy, at least the ones they care about.
When i talked over with Orchid about MangaMavericks, we wanted
to be different. But as is, we basically have the same rules as
the other forums. There needs to be room for members to feel
like they're welcomed. We are all imperfect people, and
especially a forum about giving advice and reviewing, we will
clash. So i thought of a unique reputation system.
Levels
There are four stages of Heat that someone gets.
Heat level 0 - You don't take things personally. You follow the
advice given in the rules.
Heat level 1 - Will accept advice half the time. May be asked to
change by Mod/Admin based on multiple small incidents.
Heat level 2 - Will be least likely to accept reviews/critique.
May be asked to changed by Mod/Admin based on passive aggressive
tone, and being derogatory to fellow members.
Heat level 3 - Cannot handle reviews/critique at all. May be
asked to change based on outbursts and refuses to listen to
others when it comes to advice. (listen doesn't mean you have to
accept the advice).
Purpose:
This is designed to show which members can handle what type of
reviews/discussions. Heat level 3 may not be so bad for specific
people if all they want is to receive praise. It defeats the
purpose of the forum, but at least its better than misleading
people when you join the forum designed for reviews/critique.
Heat level 0 will mean they welcome any type of review while
Heat level 1 and 2 means one must be wary on how to approach.
None of the Heat levels are designed to show who's the most
problematic. Its just to help others review in a fashion that
the person can accept. The only time people should be worried is
if the Heat-level went up to 2 or 3.
Rules to the Heat System:
Rule #1) You always start off with zero. When a moderator or
Admin asks you to change it. It will be based on previous
encounters.
Rule #2) If you want it to lower, all you need to do is learn
from your past mistakes. A 2-weeks trial with a lower Heat level
can be done. If you have Heat level 3 based on past experiences,
then you have a 1-month trial instead.
Rule #3) If however you want to move the Heat level up because
you don't want reviews, then all you need to do is ask. And you
can ask to lower it at anytime. But a warning is given if it is
moved up due to previous disputes, then it wont be able to move
up so freely.
Rule #4) No one is allowed to discuss about the heat system to
members in public space.
You cannot modify your Heat level without requesting a Mod/Admin
to do it. It will be considered breaking the rules and you get
only one warning. After that, you get your story/gallery locked,
and if it happens three times. You get a 1-week suspension. And
then after that it still continues, a month, and after that 6
months. and finally a year.
Rule #5) Even though heat level is used to measure how much you
can handle reviews, you are still required to follow the Code of
Conduct. Its not a free-pass for anyone to
Example on how it could work:
Lets say Member A (lets call him SwordVillain16) has a story.
And he has received critique and just didn't like it. He didn't
like the review he got. Or perhaps he never wanted a review. So
he asks a moderator to put the Heat level up to 3.
Members B and C (let's call them Red13, Blue06) see that he has
a heat level of 3.
All 3 read his story. Red13, didn't like it at all and saw some
serious flaws, but based on the heat level he knows the person
doesn't want advice/reviews/critique. Blue06 liked it, but
doesn't have anything to say but comments and says "Its good,
needs work. Good job".
Obviously its still in the works. What are your thoughts?

I don't know how useful it can be, but it sounds useful. We
definitely need more input on the idea.

My main concern is how to even implement it in the forum. But
there could be other holes.

"Swordvillian16"
I clearly know who you're referring to . It's best to ditch it &
move on . The last thing you want in life is having another
source of vengeance & hatred weighed on your shoulder . Trust me
, it's going to drive you mad & all stressed out to the point
you can no longer stay focused .
That aside , it's a good thing to separate those who is capable
of receiving one from the incapable . That way , we critics can
spend our little valuable time on people who are willing to
listen to our feedbacks & also this helps in preventing any sort
of argument over the tone of an actual critique (which a lot of
people seem to find it offensive) .
But I got a feeling that such system with ranks will bring bad
reputation to this site should this site gain popularity . This
system to me can become a magnet for cyberbullies to come &
hound them , even if you don't intend that to happen . I am
naturally stubborn if not monitored , so I can easily earn a
rank 1 or 2 based on the system above even if I don't want to
whenever I do slip up (like recently on DA) & in the end I might
get wrongly victimized & since this is the internet , they'll
take the bait really fast & if anything , I don't want it to tag
along with me in real life .
In my opinion , the more simpler additional info added on the OP
title thread does wonders . The users should be the one who
should find out whether if they're willing and/or able to take
critique & mention it in any threads they make just to make sure
that they minimize the frequency of receiving one (one can't
remove it altogether , one is bound to leave one on your thread
regardless , especially if the forum is more focused on
improvement) .
If they don't know if they're mentally ready for one but still
decides to post up their works , that's when admins/moderators
come into the picture , monitoring them & make an evaluation &
decision afterwards . I agree in separating them out , but
ranking them based on their tolerance towards it is very
difficult to execute simply because many factors come to play
when it comes to the reaction to one .
If you ask me , it's either you can or you can't take a critique
& if you can't take one , remind us on it but if you still
managed to get one , ignore it & walk away . So in the end ,
ranking them in the first place in the long run doesn't seem
beneficial , even if it sounds good .
Also , I think having a sub-forum dedicated to improvement with
strict moderation & guideline/approval would solve this issue
altogether .

I agree that it's either you can handle it or you can't. But I
am trying to make a system that subconsciously teach members
what the forum is about. And we definitely don't want members
slowly changing what the forum is about.
And bullying isn't an option. The rules are being reworked. RULE
#4 and #5 show that the heat system isn't there.
Also the heat system is whether one is tolerable to reviews. Not
whether your review is too strong. Thats where the rules take
effect.
Cyber bully isn't acceptable and it's really designed as a
preference tool over a punishment. What would you prefer?

Here's an idea. What if we had a critique-free zone. And those
who have proven not tolerant to reviews/critique automatically
get their stories moved there.
No...that's a bad idea.

It could work, but it ultimately has the same problem that
DeAngelus was saying that it somehow causes indirect
cyber-bullying. But there has to be "something" that highlights
what our focus is in this forum.

Yes , cyber-bullying is a problem , but in my opinion , the
problem is usually caused by one's own action & negligence &
this system had that potential to backfire hard , at least in my
opinion & in a long run . I've been to sites that had the same
goal as this one - improvement & sharing & none of them had such
system where there's ranks that determine one's tolerance to
incoming feedbacks .
It's unheard of & not yet been proven & because of this , even
if I were to say it encourages the trolls to come & mock these
peoples , it could also enforce 'maturity' - anything's possible
. Since this site is new & such concept is hard to come by for
such focus (Japanese visual works-related stuffs like manga &
light novels) , taking such risk where the possibilities is
almost endless , be it good or bad , can be overwhelming & too
high .
No one way is perfect , that's a given . Offering block feature
help gives power to users to block off unwanted threat but it's
also been proven to be a double edge sword & it's very easily
abused . the unrestrained banhammer accompanied by strict rules
& observation helps enforce the site's goals & purpose & keep
situations in check , but it invokes fear to newcomer looking
for new sites to join as it feels no different than a prison .
Friendly environment allows bonds among the same kin to happen &
strengthen , but it's serves as a peatri dish for nasties to
flourish as well & this kills formality in conversations &
actions (people would see even a constructive feedback as
insulting on the internet) . This is why I hated DA as a whole
(even more than now , after the recent event) & why I'm very
iffy of continuing my activity on Mangaraiders because of the
direction these the site is heading to . Onemanga is a slightly
different story as it feels disadvantageous for reviewers &
critics as our ways of conveying our opinion & giving feedback
may trigger some form of 'butthurt' by the receivers & will
decry our replies as offensive & mean . Even if we meant no harm
whatsoever when we posted that , Onemanga's rules & staff's
policy sides the one who cries wolf the loudest .
And yes Orchid , Lumaria was right on that . Any form of
segregation on the site's & staff's side can be considered
unhealthy because you're dictating & labeling (Direct and/or
indirectly) the user as such when no crime & violation is
committed yet & that could leave a bad impression . I might get
to this more below .
-----
My suggestion can be faulty too , but if you want my suggestion
, I'll try . My aim is to play safe before taking on a risk by
incorporating special/unique .
Most of it I've already mentioned before , that is I'd rather
not let the staffs be at the forefront at deciding the users
moves . This allows the users to take responsibility for every
action they make . The staffs will come into the picture when
the actions they've made were in a way wrong , either violating
the rules , misbehaving etc. by applying some form of punishment
. From this point on , the idea I had is crude as it can get ,
so forgive me if it is .
I was thinking of instead of having a system that is visible to
the public , having some sort of indicator that is hidden , in
my opinion , both externally & internally - Yellow-Red
flag-tagging comes to mind .
Externally in a sense that it can't be seen by any means other
than some sort of given awards/rewards . Of course , staff
members can see them automatically & more , in full picture &
this helps gauge the person's offensive value & decide on a
better punishment if the person conducted another wrong act .
Internally in a sense that it is more generalized than the
current 'Heat system' in a way that the warning they've gotten
can be a simple minor rule violation or it could be a heavy one
- what they will see (not yet decided) will be some sort of sign
shown at their profile or on their post & I mean one kind
(either it's there or it's not) . They can't tell & other users
, by nature , shouldn't question it & should be more careful
around such person by any means , not just when it comes to how
they take in reviews .
The type of warning they get is determined by the staff . It can
be minor warnings that only serve as a reminder only (but will
be made official if they violate it in successions) or major
warnings that makes users unable to access particular section
(like if one is unable to take constructive criticism , they're
barred from the sub-forums catered to only receiving one until
it's being lifted) or in a form of probation (under staff's
watch , after they receive an official warning notice from one
of the staff) . These warning will be set on temporary mostly ,
depending on its severity & will increase the chance of getting
a ban (temporary first as a final warning , permanent as a coup
de grace) via on-the-spot event or through the report feature .
In a way , my (theoretical) suggestion allows initial freedom
(so long as they read the rules) to users , both old & new to
roam who did not violate any rules or did somehow made petty
violations that is forgivable) but somehow invoke a sense that
crime will not go unpunished & will give you a perma-boot if the
site had enough of ones misdemeanor . When it comes to the
current highlight in this thread , that is to handle issues
related to giving/taking feedbacks . Firstly , rules are needed
& the rules (or just one) in my opinion would be the universal
'be civilized , respectful & considerate to others' . With this
thread as a guide
HTML http://mangamavericks.createaforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/tips-on-giving-reviews-and-how-to-accept-reviews/msg96/#new<br
/>(though it still needs more clarifications for more
effectiveness) , it can be made punishable & a major one . How
much & in what way , it depends but at least you won't escape
(mostly) when committing acts that gives you negative
empowerment to be arrogant , prideful & false righteous - the
same rule that is applied in real life . What goes around comes
around ...
That would be all , I think ...
EDIT : I'm still getting more understanding on how to make an
effective system . The resources I'm relying on are sites like
Conceptart , AbsoluteWrite , WritingForums & Smackjeeves .
EDIT 2 :Now if you ask me , it seems a bit similar only with
more fixes ... darn me ...

You could say so , but under 2 main types , minor & major , with
both having different scale of severity & punishments only
visible to you & the receiver (maybe) .
Your quick reply seems unresponsive at times ...
