Chapter 3: He's a Tramp Subchapter: TB
DIR By: KuroRiya

Tino flattened his ears against his head, frowning. He had
promised that he'd go to see Berwald again. Of course, that had
been before Lukas commanded him to look after Emil, but he still
felt obligated. Beyond that, he knew that Emil could take care
of himself. They'd likely scared the lioness off last night, so
the woods would be safe enough. But how could he separate from
the teen without it looking suspicious?
"Well, um... I need to grind my powder a bit more." He offered.
It was true. Making the powder involved grinding, drying, and
grinding again. It was truly a process. "If you don't mind, I
could always use more Fae wings. The more I have, the stronger
the powder." He pointed out. He had to smile at his own genius.
Searching for Fae would get Emil out of the area, would prove
useful to the herd, and would keep him from getting suspicious.

Unlike the others, Emil liked hunting Fae. It was fun. He smiled
and nodded in agreement. "Alright, there's a bunch down the
river. Should we hunt there?"

"Er." Backfire. Emil thought he was coming too.
"I, uh, I was going to stay here and grind for a bit, actually."
He explained, smiling to the best of his ability. "I figure you
can handle the hunt on your own." He added, smile going coy.
Stroke a ram's ego, you can never go wrong.

Emil blinked. Tino was telling him he could go off on his own,
right after Lukas told him to keep an eye on him. What did this
mean? Did Tino agree with him that Lukas was being too
protective and Emil could handle himself? There was something a
little odd about Tino's smile, though. Like it was forced...
Oh well. It wasn't like Emil was going to question it or
complain, so he nodded and promised to be back with all the Fae
wings Tino would ever need. The other bid him farewell, and the
ram was off to the spot by the river where he'd last seen that
little swarm of Fae drinking dew from the leaves. Their day was
about to get interesting.

Tino waited until Emil had been gone for a few minutes, just in
case he came back for something. When it appeared the coast was
clear, he scurried for the Northern edge of their territory,
still only able to hope that the moose hadn't been found and
hadn't somehow dragged himself away. That was doubtful though,
considering his condition.
Another thing he hadn't thought of until last night was the
possibility of a predetor finding Berwald. He was, of course,
huge. Truth be told, Emil would be the first choice as far as
prey went. He was young and not as big looking without antlers.
But if a predator was smart, like a wolf, then they'd watch the
herd and Tino would quickly become the target. Though his
antlers were big, he was clumsy and unable to fully use them.
Berwald would be the last choice, if not for how sick he was. He
couldn't even move! Hopefully Lukas' wards had kept out anything
too dangerous. The Lioness was heading south, but who knew why
else movht have gotten in.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he caught sight of familiar
antlers in the clearing where he'd left Berwald.

Berwald felt much better than he had in the last few days. He
could finally stand on his own now and walk around, and that
meant he could take himself to the river to get more water. He
drank all that was in the horn left behind by that sweet
reindeer and, now that his appetite was back, he felt he could
drink half a river. But he wasn't sure if he should leave since
Tino said he would be back today. The last thing Berwald wanted
to do was miss him, and knowing his luck, the moment he left,
Tino would show up and think he'd left without saying goodbye.
The moose couldn't have that, so he ignored his stomach and
parched throat in favor of waiting and stood guard by the little
chicks, watching over them while their parents hunted their
meals. Usually at least one bird would stay behind to keep watch
but they both seemed to trust Berwald to that task, especially
after last night.
A raccoon had tried to get its paws on the nest, waking Berwald
to a flurry of frantic chirping and peeping and hissing. The
nest was too close to the ground to be safe for them, so after
that incident, he decided he would have to carry the nest around
a bit longer. There wasn't anywhere he could think to put them
that he could reach that predators couldn't.
When Tino finally did arrive, he looked like he'd been jogging
to get here. He also took one look at the upright moose and
stopped a few paces away, seeming a bit unsure.
"Hej," Berwald greeted awkwardly. Tino was still as cute as he
remembered him.

To his surprise, Berwald was already up and about. Maybe he was
better at healing than he was giving himself credit for. But
regardless, now that he could move properly, he was more of a
threat. He looked a lot bigger upright.
But he greeted him just as nicely as he had before. So it was
probably safe. Maybe.
"Hei." He returned softly, approaching slowly. "I see you're
feeling better. Can you walk?" He wondered. If he could then
recovery would be easier. He could get down to the river to
drink and clean off.

"Ja...bu' not much else," Berwald admitted. He wasn't feeling
100% just yet, but it was a start. Hopefully with some food he
would gain a bit more energy back. "Can we go t'the river?"
By now, Berwald didn't just need a drink, but after three days
of cold sweats and wallowing in misery, he was a very smelly
moose.

He bit his lip. Emil had mentioned that he'd seen a lot of Fae
near the river, so that's probably where he was. But he wouldn't
venture far from where they frequented, so if they were
careful...
"Um, if you're up for a bit of a walk, that would be okei. One
of my herd is down there right now, so we have to go to a part
that he wouldn't go to." He explained. He sympahized, really,
but better safe than sorry.

"M'kay," Berwald agreed. This was Tino's territory and he knew
best. The last thing Berwald wanted was to get chased off by the
resident herd, or worse: forced to fight. In this state, the
moose wouldn't last long against anyone.
He turned to the tree where the nest sat in the crook of a low
branch and scooped it up carefully, making sure not to jostle
the chicks who peeped in confusion at being placed in a new very
different kind of branch. At least this time Berwald could reach
them and take the nest out whenever he needed to. He turned back
to Tino and gestured for him to take the lead.
