The widespread view in France is that, for retirement to be a
true “third age,” workers must retire while still in good health
to enjoy at least a decade of meaningful activities. Surveys
have shown that retirement tends to improve health, decrease
depression, and reduce health care consumption. However, the
increase in the retirement age does not fully explain the anger
of French workers. The reform is considered deeply unfair: it
will affect women and precarious workers who have started
working at an early age, as well as lower-middle-income workers,
       to a greater extent.
It is true that the changes were part of Macron's program for

reelection to a second term, but the
proposal has not achieved a majority in the National Assembly,
much less among the general public. N of E.: We must also
remember that Macron won thanks to the "barrier vote" against
the extreme right]. Therefore, there is something more.
Authoritarian management of debatesinside and outside Parliament
by the government has been perceived as an attack on the core of
political representation in France: popular sovereignty. The
"denial of democracy" Since the French Revolution, the "general
will", the central principle of popular sovereignty , is
exercised by the representatives of the nation.

It is precisely this national sovereignty that the government,
under Macron's instructions, has deliberately ignored and even
trampled on. First of all, this is Macron's personal failure.
The president first attempted to overhaul France's pension
system in 2019. He encountered widespread opposition. Today he
may have forced the approval of the law, but his political power
is greatly diminished and his image as a " liberal modernizer"
is in tatters. Secondly, the method that led to the approval of
the reform is controversial. The unions, all united against the
reform, were ostensibly ignored by the government.
