       Week of 9/10 (Week 3)
By: mac Date: September 7, 2018, 1:50 pm

Post here for this week. Remember you need 1 per day at least.
Topics can come from anything that we cover in class (SRS,
Mathletics, Fantasy Football project, Case Studies, etc) This
is how we report what we've read in Mathletics as well.

Based on prior knowledge and personal experience, home advantage
in any sport is preferred. Using hypothesis testing, we can
determine if their is convincing evidence if there is a home
field advantage in the NFL. Fields like CenturyLink and Lambeau
have an irreplaceable environment. Due to random chance, we
cannot claim reasonable evidence on why their is a difference in
performances in home versus away games. Perhaps, while many have
a great ability to play football, they have a better performance
in home stadiums because of the home crowd and cheers, and
representation. Or perhaps a player performs better in away
games due to added pressure and the crowds' controversial
       cheering.

What I found shocking about today's reading was when a relief
picture goes in with the base loaded, and they score, the
starting picture is charged with the earned runs. Also using
past ERA (earned run average) to predict ERA in the future is
not accurate. McCracken found that it's hard to predict future
ERA from past ERA because of the fraction of batters faced by
pitchers. A batter can do so many things, single, double, fly,
and many more. This is just one of the reasons why it's hard to
       predict future era.

When evaluating the person of a pitcher, the earned runs average
stat can be used. Any runners that score without fielding
miscues causes the pitcher to be charged with an earned run.

This chapter discussed how predicting a pitcher's future ERA is
quite complicated. However, a simpler way of predicting a
pitcher's performance was introduced, known as DICE, or
(Defense-Independent Component ERA). This uses HR, BB, HBP, K,
       and IP.

In chapter 5 of mathletics it discusses evaluating baseball
pitchers and predicts performance by using ERA which is the
earned run average. Although a pitchers ERA might be useful for
determining the value of a player it isn't useful for predicting
a players future performance. Instead a method called DICE is
used to better evaluate a pitchers future, and it stands for
       Defense-Independent Component to predict ERA.

Week one of football was very exciting. Some of our players
exceeded projections by a huge margin, while others, like
Derrick Henry, struggled to produce half of their projected
points. We ended up scoring the third most points in the league,
which is still good, but we don't have our best running back or
quarterback. I expect our team to be ridiculous once Leveon
       comes back.

I was a little worried about the case study, but I had a lot of
fun doing it and got a good score. I spent like 3 hours
researching throughout the month for my study and ended up
finishing Thursday night. I decided to go by category and
structure it by points like an essay.

I am fairly confident that I will be pretty successful when I
finish the case study. I don't exactly know what my topic for
the case study will be, but I do know that I want it to be about
the Oakland Athletics. I'm also a bit behind in the Mathletics
book so I'm reading it to catch up on my work.

In SRS pages 49-54 it discusses how they tried to find
statistical data that having the home field advantage can
increase your chances of winning but it was not able to be
proven because there isn't enough evidence. But through
simulating a difference in proportions it can be proven that
their winning percentage at home is greater than away.
