Pages 11-16 of Mathletics is offers a comparison between the
seasons of Nomar Garciaparra and Ichicro Suzuki and asks the
question "Who had a better Year?". The author uses the batter's
slugging average stat and the runs created per game stat to
attempt to answer the question. Nomar beat out Suzuki in the
batter's slugging percentage stat but Suzuki's runs created per
game stat was higher than Nomar's. Hypothetically, a team of 9
Ichiros would score an average of 7.88 runs. This creates a
question "how many runs would he create batting with 8 'average
hitters'".

In chapter one in the Mathletics book, it explains how the
Pythagorean theorem can be used to predict a baseball team's win
percentage. If a team with a positive error means that they won
more games than predicted and a team with a negative error lost
more games than predicted.

In chapter two in our book it is using the statistical season of
Ichiro Suzuki in 2004 and Nomar Garciaparra in 1997 to compare.
Also, in the book it uses slugging percentage which takes in
data number of the total bases they've gotten from hit and
walks.

In pages 3-5 the book discusses the Baseball's Pythagorean
Theorem. Bill James invented the equation runs scored squared
over runs scored squared plus runs allowed squared giving you
the estimated percentage of games won. Using this formula would
result in only a two percent chance of being off.

Pages 11-16 discuss Who Had a Better Year, Normar or Ichiro? It
states that Ichiro had a higher batting average but Nomar had a
much higher slugging percentage. The book then goes on to talk
about how you can't always trust the numbers. " A major problem
with any Runs Created Metric is that a bad hitter with 700 plate
appearances might create more runs than a superstar with 400
plate appearances."

Today I did the Do Catchers Wear Out assignment. I decided to do
Mike Napoli, a lesser known player, because it would be more
fun. I concluded that catchers don't wear out based on the data
from Mike Napoli's 2016 season. Although there was a dip in his
production in the second half, it was minimal so therefore it
could have been due to a lower ability.

Baseball's Pythagorean Theorem is used to predict a team's win
percentage. The prediction estimated from this formula is
accurate to games actually won from a team. Subtracting the
estimated percentage and the actual percentage can determine the
error. A positive error means more games were won than predicted
and a negative error means less games were won than predicted.
The MAD is a measure of dispersion.

In Statistical Reasoning in Sports we read about the theory that
catchers wear out throughout the years or their season due to
the physical demand of their position. Majority of catchers only
see a decrease in their batting avg when they are injured or not
playing for any other reason.

In the article "Do Catchers Wear Out?" in SRS, we evaluate the
performance of catchers over time. We learn the importance in
the difference of ability and performance. Based on the results,
just because a batting average changes, it does not mean a
catcher wears out, but may be injured or have other issues.

I believe that catchers do wear out because the batting average
of Jonathan Lucroy increased each season until about he midpoint
in his career where it started to slowly decrease. In 2018 his
batting average is lower than it was when he was a rookie.
