The White Garden (James and Lace)

---------------------------------------------------------
Somewhere in the multiverse, there is a mysterious garden. It is
a place of stone and water and earth with properties unknown to
even the most well versed mage. Though visitors were welcome to
this small realm harbored somewhere in the cosmos, few stayed
long, for the ever shifting state of it made it quite the
oddity.
Only three things stayed the same in this garden. Firstly, a
road of elegant white marble always rode through the center of
the place, following the path of the demiplane's sun and moon
across the sky. It varied in length and even sometimes in the
way the stones were lain, but always there was a fountain
somewhere along it's length.
The second was the hedgery that lined the side paths in the
realm was made of the most exquisite, abit dangerous, white rose
bushes. However beautiful they may be, their thorns contained a
poison that, unprotected, had the ability to harm mortal and god
alike until their responses became slow. Rumor has it that the
roses were bread specifically to remain untouched, but it does
not stop many who try to take one.
The third, and possibly oddest thing about the White Garden, is
that it always is changing. Just as the sun rises, and just as
it sets, the world comes to life and rearranges itself to suit
its own needs. Repairs to the plane are made automatically, and
any structures built during the "rest" periods are swallowed up.
Thus as it were, it was a favorite haunt of an elemental, who
enjoyed more than anything the simplicity of the realm. He would
stand and converse with the water in the fountain for hours,
because though it stayed much the same, every shift from day to
night brought it something new to say and something fascinating
to discover.

Even at first glance the eyes of the stranger that had stumbled
upon this place were mesmerized by the splendor of this land. At
the woman’s sides she did not fail to notice the exquisite
blooming roses that defined the very definition of beauty
itself. Their petals complimented the air with a seductive smell
that sung to her nostrils. The woman’s hand shied forward,
touching the air around the flower with caution before
withdrawing it. Despite the beauty captivating the flowers, the
thorns along their stems warned her to stay away.
Dark black hair with a teasing red tint flowed down her back in
large curls like a raging waterfall. The blue sparkle of her
eyes beneath the shelter of her bangs could be seen as she
measures the area around her. Deadly curves outlined her thin
black dress that was outdated by a couple centuries. The way she
composed herself even suggested that she was much older than her
exterior let out. Yet, like the roses, this woman was more
dangerous than her attractiveness suggested.
Battling with the silence in the air, the woman continues
forward, unable to take the chaos inside of her own mind. Taking
subtle steps down the marble road the new stranger found herself
at a magnificent fountain. The beauty of the crystal blue water
that flowed in the fountain’s depths begged her to stay. With a
light smile that pushed away the tension from the creases of her
blue eyes, the woman hesitates to allow the majesty of the land
to sink in. It had been too long since she had last allowed
herself to pause and take in the positivity of the future
possibilities. Here, it was as though the garden’s splendor and
opened her eyes and calmed the questions the raged inside.
“Beautiful,” a voice complimented, with an accent that could not
be recognized by those who were less than a thousand years old.

"Not many know better than to not touch," James remarked,
suddenly appearing from behind a cove in the hedgery. His
features, slightly blue in appearance, seemed to shift and sway
with the nature of his ocean- deep eyes as they eyed the woman.
Not many ventured into this little realm, that much he knew, and
few of them had the wits or beauty about them to survive long
here. And, from what little he had seen, the mystery woman had
plenty of both to thrive here.
Not that James was unattractive himself. His form, though about
as lucid as the ripples in a pond, seemed chiseled out of some
old ideal of masculine form. Only his hair, decorated in a long,
rippling mohawk and the subtlety of black against his
fingernails gave tell to anything but a long dead age. He
strolled cautiously, upon bare feet, against the pearly marble
and took one, two, three steps towards the woman. Then, just as
he seemed to falter towards a forth, his right hand raised
instead in a casual, nonthreatening greeting.
"So few people care to look first," he added, "And know what
they are dealing with. The name is James, if you were
wondering."

The male’s voice disrupted the silence almost painfully; it had
been so long since she had heard another speak. Gradually, the
woman turned to embrace the sight of the unique man who owned
the words that were spoken just a moment ago. Thousands of
thoughts passed through the depths of the ice blue eyes that
stared back into his deep blue ones. The woman’s nostrils flare
as the smell of the garden wafted across the area, hoping to
catch some of his scent so she could distinguish what he was.
However, the unfamiliar aromas of the garden were too great for
her to differentiate which was his. Glancing over towards the
direction of the roses, the woman’s eyelids falter in a subtle
blink as the memory of her hand keeping clear of the flowers
comes to mind. After a drawn out minute, her eyes return to his
own and go back into their unwavering gaze.
Once his feet yield on the marble path, just a couple of feet
away from her, the woman’s lips twitch suggesting that she was
thinking about saying something but she remained silent. Despite
the blue complexion of his skin and his seemingly ever moving
appearance the human side of her recognized handsomeness.
However, the majority of her was inhuman and easily overlooked
this trait and preyed upon his every move waiting until it knew
he would not be a threat. When he right hand relocated from his
side and into the air in peace, the woman’s shoulders seem to
relax slightly.
The slightest of smiles prowled her pale pink lips at the sound
of his name. The muscles portraying the smile felt heavy clueing
her that it had been a long time since they had expressed the
emotion.
“James,” she repeated, tasting every syllable that his name
generated. Taking a generous step forward in hopes to display
peacefulness as well, the woman recalled his prior statements.
“I would be selfish to touch something so beautiful when I get
satisfactory from simply admiring it from afar. Also, beauty is
deceiving and the thorns were not worth the chance. My name is
Soraya.”

She remained quiet for a long time, which only made James
question if his gesture of peace. He could not help but wonder
if it meant something different to those piercing eyes, and just
before he could grasp some other way to show her he meant no
harm, he visibly saw her relax just a bit. His own joints became
even more fluid as he stepped, and though much care was still
taken by every muscle and sinew, there was less tension in his
body... almost to the point of being a liquid.
"Wise decision, Miss Soraya," He told the woman under the
slightest of smiles, "Nothing is how it seems here." He breathed
in the familiar aroma of the roses and the sweet earth around
him, while he stared at here, and lowered his hand just slightly
to try to meet hers in a handshake, yet with the small amount of
nervousness, he was ready to retract it if she did not accept
the gesture.

The man’s words did nothing to settle her uneasiness in this
land however it did not fail to arouse her curiosity. Tilting
her head slightly to the side, causing the dark twirls of hair
around her to tumble down her shoulders, the woman’s smile that
caressed her lips slightly increased as his hand fell forward.
The polite gestures of greeting were very welcomed after the
numerous years Soraya had spent in solitude. Extending her hand,
she accepted his offer and shook his hand with a firm yet subtle
grip. The air around her hand was unusually warm but the touch
of her hand is extremely cold. Contradiction described this
woman well since she herself was a contradiction to life itself.
Knowing her touch was rather uncomfortable, Soraya makes the
shake quick and casual hoping not to draw too much attention to
herself.
“Experiences have given me what little amount of wisdom I
obtain,” the woman remarks, dropping her hand against the skirt
of her dress. Glancing around, she could not help but question
how much was a lie and wonder how many people normally passed
through.
“Are you the owner or do you live here, if I may be so bold to
ask, James?” she inquires, her eyes returning to his own.
It would make absolute sense for a man of his stature to live in
a place such as this. Envy nipped at her as her mind reminded
her that she held no residence anywhere. Swallowing, pride
devoured the petty emotion before it could show. Unlike most,
Soraya was not meant to have such pleasantries.
At least, not in this lifetime.

Different things played across James' features as the events
unfolded. His body tensed in surprise first, recoiling at the
feel of her hand as it touched his. His own skin, slightly
cooled by the water that made up his essence, cooled on the mere
contact with the woman and he could not help but shiver. He had
only felt that sensation once before, fairly recently, just
before he had disappeared from that life to seek a break from
its many responcabilities...
That is what this place was for him and for many others, a
retreat, something familiar but always different. So, James
could not help but chuckle as the woman questioned on the
ownership of the place. "No, no I do not own this place... it is
alive," he assured her with the slightest of smile, and a
running of his cooled fingers through his hair, "And I
definitely could not love here forever... no food, no company.
No, it is just a place I come to when everything else becomes
too much."

As the man’s body tightened and his hand withdrew from her grasp
a pained expression crossed the waves of blue in her eyes but it
was swallowed by an understanding smile that crossed her lips.
Soraya tightened her hand into a fist at her side, almost
self-consciously, as his words helped her know more about
himself. Her eyes measure the land around them after his
statements flowed to their ends and silence once against
gratified her mind with millions of thoughts. Unlike humans and
other fellow creatures of today’s world, Soraya could think of
hundreds of thoughts at the same time. It was a battle technique
which helped her to be one step in front of her opponent.
Everything about the woman, even her attractiveness, was
constructed for war.
It was a blessing as much as it was a curse. Loneliness was
nothing new to this woman and without her purpose she could not
go on. However, inhaling the land with every sense possible, she
could not help but long to stay here. Food? Soraya did not
require such mediocre substances to survive. And well, company
she had never experienced so neither of them mattered. The only
thing that would destroy her was the unsatisfying silence that
reminded her of everything she forbade herself to remember.
“I see,” she inquired, her eyes returning to his own. “It is
nice to have a sanctuary such as this to run to.”

The man sighed a breath of relief when he noticed that light bit
of understanding waver through the woman's fairly stoic
disposition, and seemed to relax a little more. He could still
easily note the stiffness in her, the tight winding of vigilance
and a deep perception of the world was more than obvious for one
so used to relaxation. Flowing to the low, simple state was part
of his nature, as an elemental of water, and this place was
about as simple as it could get, before you truly approached
nothingness.
It was his own blessing to be that way, to desire a simple life,
and to percieve things as they could be if not for the
resistance that humanity so strived for. They dammed up
everything, gathered it in one place, and thought that it would
never all come crashing down upon them one day. James, however,
held no such illusion: this was his place where he let
everything spill its banks, a controlled way to let loose up the
torrents of frustration and loss that plagued him.
Most of all, it was his place to forget. "I... I suppose it is,"
he said, "But many would find its simplicity anything but a
pleasure."

The woman’s gaze wavered slightly at his last statement as her
lips curved into a slight frown. It was as though he had read
her thoughts and peeked into pits of her very soul. How could
simplicity be defined? For most it would be the things in life
such as a lover and children and living a life in comfort; never
having to worry about the horrors outside of the walls of their
own homes. To feel loved and desired and accepted. The woman
knew better to take for granted such things that she had never
had the luxury of pursuing. Yet, the very thought of being able
to shed her responsibilities and take up such a life was almost
daunting. Idly, her eyes wander down to her scarred hands as her
mind mocked her with past images of kills. How could such hands
hold another in love and not anger and blood thirst?
No, simplicity was not tranquility or satisfaction. Perhaps,
simplicity was too boring.
The water of the fountain caught her eye, beckoning her to peer
down at the face of a woman she could not be help but hate. In
spite of everything, a smile pricked away the tension that had
formed along her lips as the woman glanced back up at the man.
“Some do not understand while others understand more than they
care to,” she murmured, breathing in a heavy sigh. Shaking her
head, knowing he would not understand what she meant and perhaps
she was also being a bit rude to speaking out of term, the woman
hurriedly dismisses the prior comment and ushers forward. “Is it
always this calm?”
