       Detia and Mearad
   DIR By: Sabby

       ---------------------------------------------------------
A lush, evergreen meadow was spread out on the edge of a dense
forest, peaceful and near silent. A slight breeze whistled
through the pine needles on the trees, causing a gentle rain of
the small prickers that caused a few birds to take flight. In
the distance, in the direction of the heart of the forest, the
trickling of a river could be heard, interrupted occasionally by
a bird's song. It was most creature's safe haven, untouched by
human err and unmoved by changing times. As if nothing could
happen here to rattle the beauty.
       And then.
Gradually, the scent of pine shifted and changed, began to smell
of scorched bark. The tips of the pine needles on the trees lit
on fire and the stream splashed, giving off a puff of steam. A
meteor-like ball of fire formed in motion, rushing through the
forest like a running deer. The 'ball' began to take shape, a
white-hot human shape still very much on fire. Slowly the flames
fed into the face, forming the shape of almost unnaturally red
lips and ember eyes before shooting into orange, red, scarlet
and black streaked hair. Slowing down, the last of the flames
split, one lick of fire forming a intricate tiara, the other
melting into a tight red dress, the skirt scattering just to her
knees like the fire it was made of.
Detia looked back, her eyes sliding between yellow-white to deep
red. A soft sigh slipped passed her lips and she shook her head
as she took in the charred path she had left behind. She really
had never grasped why she had been chosen to represent one of
the more destructive elements of her kingdom. The sadness only
lasted for a moment as her almost permanent mischievous smirk
lit over her facial features. Who might she run into today?
Hopefully they could take the heat.

There was a sigh and the furious erasing of a thousand lines,
the destruction of something she was trying to bring alive upon
the white paper. A hand ran through the fiery red hair that was
one of first things people always noticed and later recognized
her by. What was missing? What was it that kept this drawing
from being complete after all of these long years? The emerald
green eyes scanned the page taking in every small detail and
then the whole image itself. The pure black castle, the guards
whose armor bore the pattern of red dragons swirling in a dance
like pattern and the sky with the setting sun, it never failed
to send a cold shudder down her spine. Always and forever will
she look at this image and be reminded of the nightmares that
haunted her dreams and always will she be nagged by the feeling
that she should know what this place and its significance.
Snapping the book shut her fingers traced the worn and faded
gold letters that engraved her name upon the soft leather. If it
wasn’t for this one singular possession she would never had born
a name, never would have thought to call her self anything. No
matter she done and no matter how hard she tried this was
something she could never get rid of: herself. With another sigh
she rolled onto her back, her eyes watching the leaves dance
with the wind. This place, this realm, was she ever to be
allowed to leave it? Why was it that she was so bound to it? So
long had she searched for a place to belong and once she found
it she couldn’t help but to resent it. Resent what it was that
she has learned and all the things that she had found and lost.
Her thoughts scattered, running away with the wind much like the
leaves on a windy day. Sitting up she tilted her head to the
side listening carefully to the world around her. Her eyes
closed she smelled the flame, the burning, and the death to the
earth around her. A small smile couldn’t help but to spread
across her lips. Beauty was nice and all, but she wasn’t part of
it. She was a creature that brought destruction and bathed in
the glory of the night. And so she stood up on still asleep legs
and made her way towards the smell of the fire wondering who and
what it was she was to find. A small smile tugged at her lips,
was she to find the ledge to dance upon and toy with the idea of
death and dying once again? Or was today going to be yet another
boring day? She hoped not for she was Mearad, it was who she was
and always going to be until the end of time.

At the padding of approaching footsteps, Detia spun on the balls
of her feet just a bit too quickly, causing a small swirl of
flame, burning a black circle under her feet that drew her
attention for a moment. Her head snapped up quickly as her
thoughts traced back to why she had been turned around in the
first place. Not seeing anything of concern at first, she eyed
her blackened path, biting her lip and inwardly critiquing her
self control. But the footsteps crunched over the ground again
and her eyes darted over the forest looking for the source of
the noise and she backed away, her fingertips already burning in
case she needed a quick escape, or in an extreme case, a quick
method to kill. Her blood ran swiftly through her veins,
seemingly thinned by adrenaline, as she waited for the intruder
to make an appearance. But once they did, Detia almost laughed
       out of surprise.
The woman who had come out of the forest easily could have been
her twin, had it not been for her green eyes, and sure lack of
demonic blood. Detia forced her posture to relax out of a
defensive position, her shoulders falling back into a simple
show of confidence as she flashed a grin at her. Raising one
eyebrow, she silently sized her up, holding back any vocal
judgements and giving her time to squirm. After a moment, she
stuck out her hand, and in a velvety, English-Hungarian accent,
addressed the stranger. "Hello love, I'm Detia. Tia, if you want
to be friends. who might you be?"
Releasing her grasp of the girl's hand with a wink, she waited
for an answer, pondering why the girl had come to her. Surely
she had smelled the burning. Had she hoped to save someone. What
was she, a saint? Without realizing it, Detia had been staring
at her with wide, curious eyes as she thought. Blinking, she
made an effort to avert her eyes elsewhere, resulting in giving
her a once-over. She was quite attractive, definitely, but it
was best to decide what she really thought of her after
       conversation.

Eyebrow raised Mearad watched the girl as she prepared herself
to … attack? Who and what was this girl preparing to attack
exactly, Mearad? Laughter escaped past her lips, she just
couldn’t help but to laugh at the situation. Once she had been
the careful one, stalking amongst the shadows trying to hide
from everyone and everything. But now she laughed at being
careful of her movements; she no longer saw the point in staying
hidden. She was a vampire, one who has lived much to long and
wished to rid her self of this thing called life and living. And
yet, she never could and never did. When others tried to harm
her, she would put up a fight refusing to die by their hands.
When she tried to take her own life something would stop her,
kept her tied to this world. But what was it now that kept her
here? She had lost everything she held dear the last time she
tried … did … kill herself. What kept her moving forward? It all
came down to the sacrifice someone she held dear to heart made
to keep her tied to this world. The sacrifice that made her hate
him and love even more in the same breathe.
With a shake of her heard Mearad cleared her mind of the
thoughts and memories of her past. She had to let go of all the
pain and joy she felt in those times long passed and keep moving
forward. The past was the past. It had come and gone leaving
nothing more than the shattered girl held together with frayed
strings. This was the present something that held the power to
fix her wounds. Returning her attention to the woman who stood
before her, Mearad returned the grin with a smile and stifled
another wave of laughter. How was it she was supposed to react
to this kind of situation again? Certainly it wasn’t laughing …
But it had been much to long since she found herself in the
presence of another, someone she hadn’t known before hand.
Shaking the girl’s hand, “It’s a pleasure Miss Tia. Mearad or it
you want …” Her sentence came to a pause, a frown forming on her
face as she thought of the nickname that everyone she has once
called friends and family had taken to calling her, “Or you can
call me Rad.” Her head tilted to the side as she noticed the
curious eyes that watched her. Shifting from foot to foot she
found herself suddenly shy. Opening her mouth to say something
but instead closed it, lost for words she could possible say.

Detia's eyes calmed to an intense violet-red sizzle as she
watched the various expressions cross Mearad's face. As the girl
fought back a laugh, Detia's heart warmed, but her head fought
to keep her guard up. Chuckling quietly, she filled the ensuing
silence with a light hearted comment. "Well, 'Rad, I guess
you're just as conflicted as I am, huh?" Flicking her hair
behind her shoulder, Detia simply looked at her new friend,
wondering what could be on the girl's mind. She had the sense
this girl wouldn't open up to her on her own, and since she was
quite literally alone in this world, she would make the most of
the one she had. But..... How? An idea sparked in her mind, but
she wasn't sure how Rad would react.
Her whole face lit up as she grinned at Rad. "Would you like to
play a game?" Her face lit up, for once not literally. Barely
waiting for a response, she leaned forward and in one flame of
fluid motion, pulled Rad to ground and folded herself into a
criss cross sitting position. Patting the ground beside her,
Detia waited for a reaction, for the first time contemplating
the possibility that she might've scared her or angered her.
Although the smile never left her face, Detia's mind careened
into paranoia about what kind of punishment she might be about
to face. Her head thudded dully against her ribcage, and she
blinked hard. Flashes of memories came like strobe lights as she
tried to calm herself, barely registering that she was steadying
herself on the grass. The images came faster and faster until
they whirred into one memory and she fell into a dark place she
       hadn't been to in years.
She was just a little girl, her hair barely smoking, still short
and frizzy. She was playing with her toys, surely stolen from
whatever human had been silly enough to take them on their
journey to death. Her older brothers came over, and her stomach
inexplicably flipped. Looking up at them, her eyes wide, she
giggled and pulled their hands in an attempt to force them to
play with her. Instead, as soon as she had latched onto their
hands, they flung her into a wall and yelled, but her ears were
ringing already too hard to decipher the words. A few minutes
later they were still yelling, but it was now sprinkled with
       pointless insults.
And then suddenly it all stopped. She slowly uncurled from the
ball she had formed with her body, and looked up to see her
sister, exactly the same age but so much braver, yelling and
beating them back with tiny sparks that formed into white-hot
butterflies. It looked preposterous, but it was working. Taking
a deep breath when the boys finally retreated, she had looked
over at her twin and tackled her in a tiny, fierce hug.
       Giggling, she murmured, "Thanks, Twin."
Sucked out of the memory, Detia realized she was now flat on her
back. Sitting up, she only had a moment to be embarrassed before
she took a good look at the girl. Her jaw dropped slightly and
she scuttled backward in surprise. Finding her voice after a
moment, it was still shaky as she spoke. "D-Dani? Is it you?"
Her eyes widened and spilled small, lava-like tears of surprise,
and she didn't move, her eyes fixed on the woman.

Mearad found herself starring up at the sky, her emerald green
eyes watching the clouds slowly move across the endless blue.
Her thoughts slipped back into the very memories she was trying
to avoid, trying to run away from. The person, Tia, had already
slipped out of her mind as she struggled to stop thinking about
the person she had recently lost and could no longer call her
own. Her chest felt as if it was being crushed by the weight of
the world whenever she thought of his face, the disheveled hair,
and that beautiful contagious smile that always frequented his
lips. She missed and longed for the feeling of his protective
arms around her. Oh how she missed their talks and knowing
glances they would give each other. Taking in and letting out
shaky breathes she tried to forget about him; the very him who
chose another girl to be with. But how could she blame him? For
all intents and purposes she was dead and long gone. Had been
dead and long gone for a good many years …
A hand pulling her down caused her to snap back to the present
reality. It was a painful experience, for in her memories she
could relive those moments and forget that they weren’t the
past. It felt as if she had been pulled through a wall of ice
cold water, her whole being was in shock. She patted the ground
beneath her, wonder spreading across her face as she tried to
remember how she had gotten on the ground. Looking around she
finally remembered that she had company. “Oh …” She sat there
blinking trying to make sense of the words she knew she had
heard, “A game?” With a shake of her head that caused her hair
cover her face she finally cleared her thoughts enough, “Why
not.” Mearad sat there, her gaze returning to the sky not to get
lost in thought once more but as if she was searching for
something. With a sigh she willed herself to look away. There
was as little point to watching the sky for a part of her past
as there was in visiting that lily garden…
The sound of someone hitting the ground made her jump. A frown
tugged at her lips as she realised she had once again gotten
lost in her own thoughts. It had indeed been far too long since
she had company that wasn’t herself. “Uhh … Tia?” Just as she
was going to poke her arm to see if she was alright Tia’s eyes
opened with a look of shock covered her face. Rad’s head tilted
to the side as she studied the women before her. Why did that
name, Dani, sound so familiar? Looking at the ground she tried
to think … tried to remember. With a scowl on her face she
chewed on her bottom lip. Perhaps her being Dani was the part of
her life she could never remember, memories that no matter what
she had done she could never remember? With a slow shake of her
head she looked up at the girl, “I … I don’t know.”

As the girl's doubtful gaze watered down Detia's hope, the
family crest inked into the delicate skin on her wrist seemed to
itch and burn, and she almost thought she could feel the dragon
slithering around the gem, alive and determined. Casually
pulling her wrist into view to feed the crazy urge to look at
it, of course it wasn't moving. A soft chuckle escaped her lips
and she glanced from Dani to her tattoo, and her brain skipped
like a scratched CD, stuck on a small concept. Her tongue moved
behind her lips in preparation to speak, but the words refused
to come. It was a crazy idea, and even if, especially if this
girl wasn't her sister, she wanted to stay friends, and not
scare her away with obsession. But somehow her mind wouldn't
move past it. Little flashes of her and her sister as children
danced out from the far reaches of her mind, twisting her gut
with a mix of hope and loss. It hurt, and she disliked it. She
needed to know, even if just to make the 'what-if's' stop.
Begrudgingly thrusting out her wrist, Tia took in a shaky
breath, inwardly berating herself for her cowardliness.
Clearing her throat unnecessarily, her voice thankfully came out
much clearer than expected, riddled with false confidence.
Cracking her neck, the voice in her head, her Jiminy Cricket,
piped up. Come on, babe. Put on your big girl panties and just
tell her about it. Smiling to herself, she laughed as she began
the sentence. "See this here, darling? This tattoo? This is my
family crest. I guess now would be a good time to tell you I'm a
demon, eh? Just a fire demon, that's the least of my family's
evil. But... if you do happen to see this tattoo, be careful,
'cause they are part of my family and almost definitely not as
dashing as myself." Holding her breath almost without realizing
it, she waited. Watched carefully for the girl's reaction with
almost a frightening amount of hope being pent up in her.

The body froze. Emerald green eyes scanned the insignia that
marked the wrist of the girl in front on them. How was such a
thing possible? That insignia, it was the same one that she bore
upon her back. It was the symbol that used to strike terror and
fear into her heart whenever she saw allusions to it or in those
rare instances when she saw the symbol itself. Why was it that
this symbol followed her like a ghost from some long forgotten
past? It felt that this symbol was tugging on her, pulling her
forever closer to it and all of questions that it answered. She
shook her head, a soft smile playing on her lips, “You’d be
amazed on how familiar I am with symbol.” Fingers searched
through her bag, looking for the objects that bore the insignia
itself or its illusions. Her face lit up as she pulled out a
necklace: a black dragon wrapped protectively around the opaque
red stone hung ever so delicately from a chain that always
seemed on the verge of turning into dust. Holding it up, she
watched the face of the girl who sat in front of her waiting to
       see her reaction.
“How long I’ve been searching for this insignia’s meaning I can
no longer say. But it’s been such a long time. So many years of
dealing with nightmares, with fearing that a man who bore this
same symbol upon his wrist will come and harm me.” Her smile
fell from one of curiosity and excitement to one of sadness. She
looked back at the dragon pendant, her green eyes taking on a
far and distant glaze. There where certain things she had never
spoken about, never even told the ones that she loved and
trusted the most. It was the days long before she had been
turned into a vampire, and even then she had been haunted by
those nightmares and him. A man with blue hair and ice cold
eyes, he was her tormentor. Even now she could hear his voice in
the back of her mind telling all the things she didn’t want to
believe, all the things that always drove her to trying to …
die. And probably the thing that caused her the most distress
about this man was the fact she didn’t know if he was real, if
the figure she used to see was one of her imagination or not.

Tia reached forward, fingering the necklace so delicately she
seemed almost afraid to touch it. A distant smile drifted over
her face as she let it swing out of her reach and back into the
air, away from her, away from the questions that were sure to
follow. But as Dani.... Rad... Mentioned the man coming after
her, Tia's face turned to stone in less than a second, the
change almost frightening. Smoke billowed from her nose like a
dragon as her eyebrows came together in a fierce glare. But she
wasn't glaring at her sister. She was glaring into the distance,
obviously thinking of something else very far from here. Her eye
blazed white hot, only cooling to black as she calmed down. Even
so, when she spoke, her voice shook with years of suppressed
rage. "Alistair... Fucking... Alistair. You stood up for me when
you... We... Were very, very young. And he hated you for it.
When plain old violence didn't hurt us anymore, he used his
power of illusion. And it kind of destroyed you. He stripped you
of your demonic abilities once you begged to be exiled, and let
you go. The guy he tortured you with isn't real, and little Ali
is dead now, thanks to some... Developments.... In my powers." A
small, proud smile slipped forward and she murmured, "I can turn
       into a giant fucking dragon."
Suddenly remembering she had an audience, she shook her head,
and her expression softened. "I don't know what happened to you
after you got exiled. You literally asked for it as far as
everyone else was concerned, and I guess you ran into a few
bloodsuck- Vampires." Chuckling, Detia brushed her hair out of
her face, raking her fingers from root to tip as a years-long
breath of air escaped her soul. Embarrassingly, her eyes filled
with tears, and she looked away to flick the moisture from her
eyes. Looking into her twin's eyes, she murmured, "I haven't
thought about that in years. I've actively avoided thinking
about you because I didn't want to think about what had happened
to you." Her top teeth came over bottom lip, kneading it nearly
to the point of bleeding as she waited for a response from the
sister she thought, and had assumed she had lost.

Laughter couldn’t help but to escape past her lips as she
listened to the words that Tia spoke. It all came together like
a perfect puzzle after all of these years, after she felt all of
that heartache, that confusion and that loneliness. They where
all things that had helped shape her into the person she is
today. No longer could she lay claim to the name of Dani, those
days of her life where nothing more than small snippets she
caught within her dreams. She was Mearad, the vampire who once
believed that she could never be molded and shaped by the people
around her. She was the girl who had once been, and still
slightly is, bent upon her own self destruction to silent those
voices of her past. All these things, they just melded together
so well leaving no crack to topple them over and that, to her,
was the funniest part of it all. It was so solid and concrete,
how could she deny it even if she couldn’t truly remember it?
“Kalma, my personal tormentor created by my own brother, what a
romantic idea.” She started to laugh again as she spoke, her
words escaping past her fits of laughter. So story book like,
and she though that life didn’t work in such a fashion. How
wrong she was and had been about so many things in life.
“I assume the day he disappeared from the world outside my mind
was the day Alistar died?” Her emerald green eyes sparkled with
a new found fierceness and life as she fought back her laughter,
“A shame really, I would have loved to give that fucker my
appreciation.” With a quick shake of her head she bite her
bottom lip stopping the laughter from returning, “Really though,
what a brilliant trick that is, somewhat cowardly doing it to a
young human child sure, but brilliant nonetheless!” Her head
tilted to the side as she caught the soft murmur, “Anne, I
wonder if she was just another construct of the mind or some
illusion?” A frown tugged on the corner of her lips as she sat
there wondering about the black dragon who helped her survive
when she finally ran away from the orphanage. With another shake
of her head she stood up, “I wish I could remember the years
before that damn orphanage,” as she spoke she begun to pace back
and forth trying to get rid of the pent up energy she hadn’t
felt in a long while. “But, yes, a vampire by the name of Dies
found me wondering the allies alone at night. Not a smart move
on my part, perhaps, but you can blame him partially for the way
I turned out and for the fact that I’m standing here right now.”
