Chii & Feline
DIR By: RiloRii
Date: February 12, 2012, 3:12 am
---------------------------------------------------------
How.. How long had it been for her? The vast intervals
of time that she came outside, the length where she was trapped
inside her own self. Just how long had it been since she adorned
her more natural form? She wasn't quite sure, nor did she really
care to know. Sprawled upon the emerald grass, she found herself
staring at her reflection in the water. Despite how much she
read, despite how much knowledge and intelligence she held, she
had no experience with any contact of anyone. There was no
telling what all she lacked. Many bandages wrapped her white
furred fingers as well as up to her elbows. A fight maybe? No,
not at all. Even her clothing was as odd as her. All she wore
was a long grey shirt that covered all the necessities. Large
ears poked from turquoise and green hair as those two colored
eyes looked at herself. Whiskers long, slender but busty frame,
she looked like she could be sweeter than could be; and she was.
Despite how Chii knew nothing of contact or other people,
despite how she knew how to do nothing, she survived on her own.
Her white cheeks held two large ebony dots beneath her eyes as
she sat up and curled her knees close to her chest. Even her
voice had been lost. Having never used it before. She didn't
even know what she sounded like, but she was very quick to learn
things. Having never spoken to someone, she had never even been
given the chance to learn how to speak. Pulling a book to her
knees, her black and green striped white tail curled around her
hips and ankles as she began to read. Who would ever talk to the
likes of her? Most simply turned away. Even though she did not
know how to use any of her given traits, her voice, her
emotions, even her skills; she would pick up on them quickly if
she saw someone doing it. Yet, no one even gave her the chance.
So she resorted to seclusion, her library that of something vast
but her curiosity even larger than that.

---------------------------------------------------------
The morning was late as a most cacophonous sound rang out in the
den bedroom of a slumbering feline. It was all riddled with
things one could not begin to describe and technology that
simply boggled one's mind with it's thousands of uses each. Was
it really excessive for the groaning being within it's bed to
have? A thin brown tail slipped out from underneath the white
thin sheet to slap down onto the source of such arrogant
annoyance screaming it's presence.. And broke it. A groggy curse
slipped from a white maw that ended in a wet, pink nose and
jowls that curled upward in their annoyance.
“Friggin'...” the high tenor mumbled in it's chime like ring.
“Ugh, okay. Wake up... C'mon...”
In total honesty, there wasn't much to the unimposing, cat like
figure slipping from it's bed. If anything, it was almost a
house cat on two feet. Light brown fur with a white belly
secondary colour painted the seemingly young man's body, fully
nude, as it slipped from and stretched out beside it's bed. His
bed, as noted by it's obvious appendages, at that. But, in all
honesty, it didn't seem to matter to him. Instead of wondering
what he would do today, he already knew. Something was planned
today; something rare.
He'd go outside today. Yes, it was scheduled. Even a cat in it's
den needed sunlight, right? The cat paced forth towards a large,
obsidian dresser and pulled on it's handle to find all of it's
contents sorted as outfits for each day of the week. Ludicrous?
Not to himself. Everything he had was organized for easy access.
It made life tons easier... Except for the clock he broke.
Either way, he would simply build another and hope he could hold
restraint the next time he attempts to shut the annoyance off.
It was only a second before the feline was dressed, and dressed
simply; One thin, black hoody draped his slender upper body with
green cargo shorts covering his lower body. No socks, no other
things, just those would be all that was necessary. After,
having decided not to waste time with early morning toiletries
except for it's most basic use, his form padded in a jog through
the enormous space that was more of a mansion than some dank and
dark cavern to stop just outside upon a high mountain cliff. The
sun's rays slammed hard into the Feline's face, but it seemed as
if it gave no imposing threat to him. Rather, after the moment
he had stepped out, before he could speak on the sun's rays, he
paused.
“...Feline? Not on it's fours, but... Ah, hell, might as well
figure out what it is.”
But, of course, what he would find would stop him in his tracks
after his all-too-easy climb down the mountainside. First of
all, what he saw was female. Strange? Perhaps not to you, but to
someone who hasn't seen such a gender before? That was more
strange than he could even consider. Second of all, she... Well,
quite frankly, she made his gut twist, and not from the amount
of clothing she lacked. Sure the tank top would suffice to
simply cover, but many things could leave her in compromising
situations, and though he had an inkling to turn and simply walk
away until he could calm down, the other side of him absolutely
forbade it.
His deity side.
The side that programmed him to care for his race. The side that
said “Hey stupid, that feline is in need! Go deal with it!” and
didn't let him argue whatsoever. So now, in the most awkward of
situations within his own conflicting morals and reservations,
the Deity found himself pacing towards the woman- Chii, he
thought, which was an odd ability to himself- without any kind
of hesitation. He even spoke without processing his thoughts,
either.
“Hello, there,” he said in his high, quiet tenor, hands stuffed
in his hoody. “That doesn't look so comfortable, y'know, with
the... Well, with just the...”
For a moment he paused and nearly smacked himself before he
backtracked and squatted down beside the girl.
“I uh, well, I don't have a name, but it's nice to meet you. I
have clothes back at the den that I'm sure will fit you, and...
Uh... Oh man...” One hand slipped from his hoody pocket to slip
back through his hair, his attempt to think more clearly more
than a complete failure due to the situation.

A smell. What was it? Who was it? It infiltrated her
nose like acid, a new found scent that she wasn't familiar with
at all. Just as her bandage finger readied to turn the page in
her book, she found her eyes trailing up the frame of a male
feline. Her right large ear twitched slightly at the sound of
his voice. A voice? He was speaking, vocally, rather than
mentally. Mentally? Yes, well, that's how she always heard
voices come out of her books. While reading them, other voices
of what she thought the characters would sound like ran through
her mind. Was this what an actual voice sounded like? Whiskers
twitched slightly as she crinkled her nose, understanding his
words clear as day but processing all the information quite
quickly, as well as self teaching herself something. To speak.
Pupils of orange and blue coloring dilated and shrank quite a
few times, like a camera lens when it took photos. As if, she
was recording and altering the information to suit her own vocal
cords.
Lips quivered slightly as she looked back down to her book,
going over a few words and letters, seeming to form a sentence
first. Then, she placed the book to her side and looked back up
to him. Tilting her head, Chii took a moment to examine him once
more before she pushed herself to her feet. The strap of her
shirt hanging off her shoulder as her short visage compared
nothing to anyone though her tail was that of something that
could easily engulf a large male. Pursing her lips once more,
she poked her cheeks with her index fingers slightly just to
make sure her lips were moving before she said anything. And
when she spoke, that voice trailed from her maw like a melodious
symphony of tranquility and serenity. Even that of the heaven's
angels would've felt envy. "H-hello, uncomfortable? I.. What?"
She confused herself momentarily with his staggered words before
she shook her head and learned that much more quickly. "I.. I am
Chii. No.. Name?" Her ears folded back and she looked up at him
with a small frown, her tail winding around herself.
"It's.. Nice? T-to meet you t-too. I.. Have clothes.. I just.."
She looked down, twiddling with the hem of her long shirt as she
curled her tail around her tighter. Those bandaged arms wrapping
around herself soon afterwards as she kept her eyes down. "D-do
not know... Wh-what to do t-to use th-them.. They're too.. Too
c-com-complicated to ad-adorn." She stuttered out, her oddly
colored and marked fur bristling slightly as her ears fell flat
against her head. Soon enough, she scooped up her book and held
it tightly to her chest. "I.. Only... Know things.. But don't
know.. How to do them... I've read how to do them.. But have
never actually been able to do them... I hurt myself a lot.. And
I'm a clumsy fool sometimes.. This is... Actually... The first
time I've ever used my voice.. " Admitting this meekly, she
looked to her hands before she uncurled her tail and allowed it
to rest atop her head between her ears, making her look quite
silly. Looking up at him, she didn't mind hiding behind her
tail's tip. "You... Don't have.. To help me.. No one's ever
even..." She trailed off.
Her ears twitched furiously as she tightened her grip on her
book. "Spoken to me before.. No one at all... So... Thank you..
For teaching me to speak, even if you didn't knowingly do so..
Thank you.. For even noticing me.. But.. I wont talk much.. I...
Would rather write it or... Not at all.. So pardon my silence
when it comes.." She muttered out, looking back down. Just how
much silence.. Had she already endured?

It was odd. The girl seemed to be confused that he was speaking.
Was she able to speak? Oh man, if she was mute, this was going
to be impossible. Of course, he could probably cure such an
affliction as long as she was Feline, but that wasn't the point.
The point was that, even for a deity, it would take a while.
Constant contact to exchange DNA strands that would likely
partially reconstruct the tags of her own that gave her ears
marching orders not to work and force them to work, then there
would be the complication of giving her more knowledge about his
own existence that he would... Rathter... Keep...
What was she doing? The feline could sense a kind of mass
construction and brain activity within the woman, but it seemed
to be more on the end of speech and language than anything. The
only thing that had given that clue off, though, was that she
had looked at her book before standing to look at him and almost
mimicking how he would stand. For now, though, that was the
least of his more personal worries. In fact, it was everything
he could do to ignore physical appearance and live through the
day as he did his best to not take in the fact that her tank top
was slipping.
But that all went straight to hell in a hand-basket wrapped in
silk when she spoke.
It was absolutely impossible to ignore the woman in any sense
now. Was she a woman? How could a female sound in such a way
that actually made the Deity freeze? It was almost adorable to
him how she spoke, and it didn't help that she had confused
herself with her own speech. But, of course, then his silence
over her stumbling became slightly more awkward when she stated
that clothing was more imposing than anything and that the
realization made her uncomfortable. So, almost reflexively, the
Deity flipped up his hood to block out his sight. Of course, he
could still sense the objects around him, but he couldn't
physically see her lack of adornment. Hopefully, it would make
her more comfortable. Now was the question of how to help the
woman. He couldn't let her reject the help. He was a deity made
for just the purpose. It's why he had all the equipment he had
and inhabited a location where it was more likely to find a
feline.
So now was the time that he had to be more aggressive...
Figuratively.
“Well,” he started, his quiet tenor holding a bit more
excitement, which only masked his nervousness. “I guess I'm just
gonna have to help you out and teach you, now ain't I?” With
that, and a smile, Feline outstretched his hand to the woman
with fingers splayed and palm up. A smile kept upon his maw as
he continued to speak, his tail waving slowly behind him. “Most
people are uncaring, but you don't have to worry. There are
others, like myself, who would help you with nearly anything you
ask. So what do you say? I can feed you, get you clothes, teach
you how to wear them without them restricting you, and even show
you the ropes of social living... Not that I know too much, but
I get by.”

Curiosity. That was one thing this.. Creature, did not
lack. So as he flipped his hood to block his sight, she found
herself lurching forward slightly to peek beneath the hood. When
he spoke, her ears twitched in response, as if noting every word
just encase he thought she wasn't listening from lack of her
vocals. A small smile soon turned her maw before she leaned a
bit closer to him to look at him better. She could only learn
through experience, so as he hid himself from her, she felt as
though she wasn't learning anything. "I.. Pardon me, but.. I'm
not uncomfortable with how I am dressed at the moment.. It's how
I've always dressed.. I figured out how to put a shirt on by
myself without being shown.. So it's the one thing I'm proud
of." She muttered quietly, having seen his stunned reaction from
her voice. Once again, whiskers twitched as her nose crinkled
and she straightened up, looking down. Thinking on this, on his
words, she couldn't help but to hesitate.
For a moment, she even considered running. Yet instead of this,
she lightly turned on her heels and faced the serene waters. "As
you.. Can clearly see.. I'm nothing of your usual thing..
Teaching, for me, is only watching. I only have to watch or see
something happen, and I learn it nearly instantly and can do it
myself.. The downfall though.. Is that for those few seconds
that I'm learning something.. I become unresponsive, to the
point of being dead." Gaining a small smile, sorrowful some how,
she looked back to him while holding that book so close to her
heart. "I've never.. Even been spoken to before now.. Even in a
more... Lovely, state of appearance, people avoid me.. Creatures
of all kind.. Can you not smell it on me?" She asked lightly,
looking back into the waters before she turned away from them
entirely. "Death lingers so close to me, that people do not wish
to be near me because of it. You should be wise and run away
from me as well..." A pause, more hesitation, she didn't want
him to leave at all; but he deserved to know, didn't he?
Collecting her thoughts, strange locks shadowed her eyes as that
sad smile remained. "Thank you.. For your offer,..." Her right
ear stood straight up and she looked at him with a light hearted
some what grateful and happy smile. "Since.. You have no name, I
suppose.. I'll call you Kaķu Dievība.." Turning her
back to him, her tail curled around her once more as her fur
bristled slightly. "Thank you, once again, Kaķu
Dievība, for your offer; but I would not like you to be
around the likes of defilement. I am not like you in the way you
think.. I am feline, yes.. But that is not entirely all.."
Looking over her shoulder, those odd pupils continuing their
growing and shrinking as she turned to the side only give him a
respectful bow of apology. "I wouldn't want to burden you
either.. You don't like the sound of my voice.. You shy from my
appearance.. It would be difficult for you to teach me anything
while knowing what could very well happen with that knowledge,
along with the smell it would produce so close to you.."
Quickly, she turned on her heels and began to walk away. Why?
Why was she walking away from the only person who actually spoke
to her? Who was offering kindness and hope to her? Because,
emotions didn't honestly display across her face. It was all
mimics and tries, never honest and true. She could not let him
take on such a burden, could she? Plus, he probably wouldn't
stick around after knowing that, would he? Her ears folded back
as she walked away, looking down. "I'm sorry.." She muttered,
not knowing what else to say as she didn't think he'd care
anymore after her giving him that knowledge.

She wasn't uncomfortable? How was that possible? It seemed as if
she was before, but now she had just simply made him backtrack
his own thoughts. But, at least she was proud of something. So
if she figured out more indirectly on her own, she would...
Well, it was a possibility, but to indirectly teach someone was
more difficult than ever if that person simply watched you do
what actions they needed to learn.
The next set of events were all too confusing. She was
conversing, so he proved he could help, yes? She was making her
decisions as well, but one she was making at this moment, after
her explanation of her process of learning, was something he
wasn't entirely sure he could exactly live with. He was a feline
deity. He was here to help a Feline. Not just an
anthropomorphic, but any feline in existence. Didn't matter if
they were his race completely or if the only comparison was the
appearance. So for now, though he had already made up his mind
entirely, the deity stood by and listened, then had to quickly
switch to deciphering lip movements to pick up on the name he
gave her.
For a moment, though, as Chii began to walk away, the newly
named Kaku seemed as if he would seriously just allow her to
walk away completely from him. But just before she had reached a
distance of fifteen feet, Kaku's voice rang out, as if now more
demanding than simply stating.
“So where you gonna go now? Giving up when you have a chance to
learn? You don't make me feel awkward. Hell, I thought you were.
But I'd like an answer. Gonna go back to seclusion and wait a
while before seeing the sun again?
((-sighs- For now, this is all I can give. Using Kaku is still
strange to me.))

As she was walking away, his voice filtered into her
ears and they twitched up. Her maw formed a small frown and she
stood there for a moment, thinking. "I see the sun every day.."
She muttered, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder.
"Seclusion..." She looked down, sighing a bit as she turned on
her heels and padded back up to him. At this point, she had
nothing to lose, so why not? Quickly, she reached out and
tenderly grabbed his hand, pulling him along with her. Without
word or why she was taking him somewhere, she just led him along
behind her. Her tail staying closely wrapped around her as she
didn't want it to be all over him. For the moment, she didn't
say a single word. Hair shadowing her face as she gently tugged
him up a black stone path. Ears folded back tightly against her
head to keep her from hearing a thing at all, just encase he
spoke while she had physical contact with him.
Refraining from making any sort of eye contact as well, she led
him up the path. There was a reason she was taking him
somewhere, it'd be easier for her to learn and for her to show
him that she wasn't seclusive in a certain way. A large mansion
like home came into view and she quickly led him up the winding
steps. Once she got to the door, she quickly opened it before
getting him inside and pushing the door shut with her tail.
Looking around for just a moment, she pulled him down the hall
before even giving a chance to really notice anything. Not for
the sake of him not getting a look at her home, but because this
wasn't the room she wanted him in. Coming to an ashen grey door,
she opened it and gently pulled him inside. This is where she
had wanted him to be, to see. In a haste, she removed contact
with him and waited just a minute before looking at him, her
ears unfolding finally.
Surrounding them was a vast library, one that not only went up
to the first floor, but the second and third. Every shelf upon
the walls and throughout the large room was decorated with
plenty of books. "This is where I stay most of the time.. But in
order to be seclusive as you assume, I'd have to stay inside all
the time.. Even if.." She looked down. "Even if people stray
from me and don't like me, I still go to libraries and stores to
buy books. So.. I'm seclusive in a sense of people, but not in a
sense of being outside my home.. The reason I brought you here,
is because it would be easier for me to learn if there's a book
in front of me and I know what it is by wording what you're
doing." She trailed off, going to the first shelf to replace the
book she had and then grab a black bound book. Opening it to a
certain page, she returned to him and pointed to a certain
sentence.
"Smiling ever so brightly he turned upon his shoes and gave a
joyous laugh." Is what the sentence said. "I know every book in
my library word for word and page for page.. But.. I don't know
what any of this is in reality. So the fact that I know what the
words are, I can know what it is you're doing without you
actually telling me. For example, the word Smile is here. Can
you show me what that is?" She asked, curiosity taking a moment
to overrun her as she lurched forward a bit.

Well, didn't he feel like the world's biggest dumb jackass?
Making assumptions without truly knowing normally got the better
of him, and it was why he also normally ended up with burnt and
singed hair thanks to his technological blunders and failures.
So now not only did he feel like a stupid jackass, he also felt
like a hypocrite. He was the one scheduling days out from his
seclusion while she was going out every day. Honestly, though,
how anyone could tolerate the outside world was beyond him and
he was normally more than happy to forget it unless his senses
told him to go check something out. In which case, yes, he was
out and about, but only long enough to see what was happening.
Kaku didn't have time to think about that now as he felt
something that made him feel so awkward that he locked up; she
grabbed him.
It was obviously in no area of worry, but nonetheless, she had
grasped hold of him and it was more than enough to make him feel
so awkward that now all he could do was let his feet stumble
forth to keep his own balance, tripping here and there up stones
and steps alike until he now found himself in the midst of quite
a large home. It was nearly as impressive as his cavern...But
when you had an entire cavern to fill and you had long enough to
work at it, you usually learned how to fill up an area the size
of a respectable village, but it truly wasn't something to brag
about considering he practically did have a village and nothing
else but his own lonesome self in it. Now all he could feel was
lonesomeness, even as he was in the company of another. Even if
it had become terribly awkward with how long they had been in
contact despite the minor break in touch. There had to be a
reason she was being hasty, though, and gladly picked up the
pace until they were in another room...Which then began to stun
him.
She had more volumes of tomes in this room than pieces of
technology he had in his cavern, and that was saying a damn hell
of a lot! But as she began to speak, Kaku's mind was brought
from the amount of books that she had and his earlier blunder.
She was alone. Probably as alone as he was. People ran from him
after he had helped them, but he had grown used to it, so...Why
did it sting now? Maybe he was feeling the kind of pain that he
may have caused her earlier. But that too was pushed from his
mind as he forced himself to tune in, which now brought him to
make sense of why she wanted him here. Her ability to learn was
solely encompassed around a multi-tier approach, as far as he
could tell. She needed written and illustrated examples before
she would physically be able to understand it. In another way,
as she explained through the book, she also needed to see things
in order to understand them. It gave him a foggy reminder of
something he had read on dimensions of reality, and thus far,
she was only perceiving one of the two dimensions of reality
that a person could perceive in three dimensions. To see things
in all three would be impossible because – due to perspective
itself – a being wouldn't...
Kaku was distracting himself again with semi-meaningless
bullshit, but he got the jist of the problem here. She needed to
be shown what she reads, and then shown how to do what she is
shown even if she has a full understanding of it.
“So...” he started, his hand scratching the back of his head,
feline ears twitching as his tail swayed behind him.
“Uh..Wh-what do you want to start with?”

Chii's ears twitched lightly as she watched him looking
around at her library. Blinking a few times, she mimicked the
expression he wore before ears stood tall in alertness at his
voice. Straightening up, she seemed to rush about her library,
disappearing behind shelves and some how walking across the top
of some. Her head just shy of the ceiling as she had to have her
ears folded back to not brush them against the white spackle. In
her arms was a large stack of books so much so that if she had
carried them with her arms instead of the flat of her tail, they
would've been hitting the ceiling and toppling over. Looking
down to him, she leaped from the top of the bookcase. One would
stare at her in freight that she was going to hurt herself or
worse as she came rushing to the ground. Though she didn't. Her
padded feet struck the floor with barely a sound, her hands
keeping the books in place as she peeked around them to look at
him. Chewing on her lower lip, she moved back to the table and
moved each book to a certain place. Opening them to certain
pages, she gave a soft purr like sound as she skittered into the
chair and sat cross legged.
"Okay.." She started, pointing to the red bound book and moving
her finger to a specific word. "Can you show me what a 'Smile'
is?" Quirking a brow, her ears twitched as teal locks shadowed
her face. White fur upon flesh bristled and she looked down.
"Listen.. It's going to be hard to teach me.. I don't know what
hardly anything is.. I've always been alone and I've never been
taught anything other than what I've learned on my own. I can't
barely dress myself other than putting on something like this
long shirt and knickers. I've only learned to do the necessities
by illustrations in books and even then I'm clumsy so I hurt
myself doing them. So if this becomes too difficult for you to
do, then please just tell me and go." Her tail twitched a bit
and she picked up another book, examining it for a moment, she
pointed to another sentence. "I know that there are emotions,
but I physically can't display them or feel them myself until I
learn them.. I'm not just a feline.." She looked up to him and
tilted her head. "I can mimic them from observation, but I can't
do them myself because I don't know what they are for myself.
Emotions, actions, even some senses of mine don't work right now
because I haven't learned them."
"My mother died when I was very very young. So I've been on my
own since then, I can't even hardly remember her face. So she
never got the chance to teach me all of these things, but what I
do remember is her telling me how everyone of our kind had to do
it this way. I was just the unlucky one who didn't have a
teacher." She shrugged a bit and moved her finger from the
sentence. "Can you show me 'Frowning' after you've shown me
'Smile'?" She asked, looking to him and settling the book down
as she curled her hands into her lap and leaned forward. Her
tail providing a plush pillow as she rested her chin on it and
the table.

This was strange, indeed. The girl had quite the expansive
collection, and damn if she didn't seem to remember it all
already. The way she darted this way and that made it seem to
the feline god that she not only memorized every book, but each
book that continued to hold answers from her – constant
mysteries that he would find very soon were all simple things.
As Chii began her descent to the floor, Kaku only watched, as if
knowing the girl would be fine. She did seem to be feline
herself, and cats naturally were able to land gently from nearly
any height. It was all in the way one absorbed the shock of
landing. Impressively enough, the girl also seemed to memorize
the exact pages in which her questions lie, and at he first
question, he couldn't help but feel his maw pull upward. Sharp
canines glistened in the library's light, and the corners of his
lips were drawn upward.
“Well,” he said chuckling, noting already that he had done so
without realizing. “Smiling is quite like this! I'm sure you
already read what smiling is for...”
Kaku began to trail off though as Chii began to speak again. She
had it this rough? Well it'd be a cold day in hell if a feline
deity such as himself would turn down something similar to his
kind. It was what he was here for, yes? She couldn't dress? Kaku
would teach her. As for emotions..Those were naturally felt. It
was odd to hear that emotions had to be taught. Anger was a
reaction to being struck – normally, and so was fear. Jealousy
was a by-product of anger when one coveted something another had
or could do, and sadness and joy were natural reactions to
stimuli according to situations and environments. What she
seemed to feel at the moment was something akin to insecurity,
though, and Kaku thought perhaps she was quite acquainted with
it considering how she acted to relaying such information.
This, instinctively, brought a frown to his lips. The corners of
his maw drew downwards as his lips closed, brows furrowing in a
sort of downward arch as he thought on all of this. This was
going to be much more complicated – yet also quite simple – than
programming a system from the very base. He had everything she
needed to learn, so that was the easy part. It would simply take
living with her to teach her everything...But the one he was
worried about was affection. That had to be found over time with
someone that you grow attached to positively. How could one
possibly teach that?
The emotions that stirred within Kaku began to make his fur
bristle. He knew what this was leading to, and immediately his
lower lip was sucked between his teeth. He was overall antsy and
looking left and right, his chest rising and falling.
“Oh man,” he muttered, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “Not
good, not good- is there a bathroom in here?” Kaku's questions
were rushed, as if he hadn't the time to have delay upon the
answer. Already his fur was shifting from its light brown to
that of a striped light and dark blue, though the light had
taken predominance over the dark. “I-I-I really need it...” Even
his voice was beginning to crack and heighten in pitch...
