Alexandria & Lost

The setting sun casts the shadows of colossal buildings
everywhere, elongating them so that they appear even larger then
they truly are. Bright street lights illuminate most parts of
the city, cars zooming along the roads, creating an atmosphere
of urgency, the horns constantly blaring only adding to this.
Even with the rest of the world falling into a slumber, this
city remains awake and alert; however the people begin to
change. With the sun finally sinking beyond the horizon the scum
and sleazy begin to seep out from seemingly every direction, not
so much in the main part of the city, but the rundown downtown.
Despite the slight difference in location, the scenery is
drastically different from the majority of the city. Street
lights are still present, however most are either shattered or
flicker off and on, settling mostly on off, casting an even
darker presence into this small portion of the city. The alley
ways become shadows between buildings, a picture perfect image
of what most young woman, and some older as well, dread avoiding
at all costs. The buildings, with holes scattered throughout
them, scream danger to most citizens, for the most part only the
lowliest of degenerates and scoundrels find themselves in this
decrepit area.
This is where Jake finds himself, his back pressed up against a
brick wall, bare flesh being slightly scratched up by its
roughness, his dark green eyes gazing at the three men that move
menacingly towards him. Despite the odds, increased by the knife
held in the smallest of the threes’ hand, no fear shines in his
eyes. They are outmatched in everything but numbers against
Jake. Taking in a deep breathe, he waits, counting down from 10,
as their steps become closer and closer. Suddenly the middle
one, easily the largest of the three muggers, lunges forward his
hand flying towards Jake’s stomach. Lifting his right arm, in an
almost casual way, he forces the first attacker’s arm out to the
side, before his left fist strikes out, catching the mugger
solidly in the gut, directly over the diaphragm, knocking the
wind out of him. Side stepping the man as he falls, Jake’s eyes
glue themselves to the other two, who begin to move in unison
towards him.
The unarmed man swings first, a wild haymaker coming for the
right side of Jake’s face. Bending his knees, he lowers himself
just enough that the swing misses him, connecting fully with the
shoulder of the smallest mugger, dislocating it, a scream of
pain parting his thin, dark lips. Rising again he waits for a
second, before the knife is being swung out towards him. Both of
his own arms move together, the first slamming against the top
of the wrist of the attacker. At the same moment his other hand
thrusts upwards, hitting against the straightened elbow. The two
momentums working against each other cause the man’s arm to stop
moving first. Then the stronger of the two forces, the hand
moving upwards, wins the struggle, snapping the mugger’s arm
right at the elbow. This small victory does not make Jake lower
his guard. As the man screams, Jake’s hand snakes out as fast as
possible, snatching the knife out of the air, as the mugger had
released it as his arm was broken. Seeming to almost twitch his
fingers, the knife spins, until the blade is upwards, resting
against the throat of the mugger that had attempted the
haymaker.
“This is over. Follow after me and I will kill you.” Jake’s
voice is completely calm, aside from the slight breathless tone.
Lowering the knife he walks towards the entrance of the alley,
his body twisting just as he passes the boundary between street
and alley, his hand striking straight out, releasing the knife.
It soars through the air for a moment, before embedding itself
within the back of the largest mugger’s head, silencing his
slight groans, a simple warning to the other two, who had only
been following their leader.

A cloud of darkness began to fall across the fading light of
sky, slowly removing the warm, red beauty of sunset from the
atmosphere until its next calling from the sunlight. Soon to be
hidden beneath the darkness, a derelict city stood, the only
source of light through the night time hours being found hanging
20 feet in the air perched on top of a metal pole, some giving
no light whatsoever. Throughout the city, the foulest of crimes
were being commited almost every night, in one alleyway would be
a violence fuelled mugging, whilst in the open streets, gangs of
teenagers in possession of whatever they were able to use as a
weapon approached their rivals. The more their blood boiled, the
more that blood was spread across the uneven concrete of the
open roads, leaving it stained forever, strangers seeing the
physical remains of a cruel event from only hours beforehand.
Regardless of the carnage that swept the streets, thousands of
men, women and children continued to call it their 'home', a
sanctuary more safe than were they had previously found
themselves. However, some individuals choose to continue living
life in this decrepit area for the simple hope of escaping the
life they had once known, once shared with another, a
family...left behind in an instant. This was the category that
Alexandria would place herself. After being forced to live a
life she had never asked for or wished to aspire to, she found
herself an unwanted being amongst her own flesh and blood, an
outcast, having to find a safe haven in a matter of hours before
the sun dissapeared into the night, and after countless hours of
walking with nothing but a backpack of belongings and her
pockets filled with the money she had saved since she was only a
small girl, this was where she found herself. Her heart had
fallen so low in only one day, and handing that money over that
she had treasured for so long to a complete stranger renting an
apartment only made it fall to its lowest point, the only good
coming out of the day being the fact she had a place to sleep.
As the night progressed, Alex tossed and turned continuously as
sweat beads caressed her cheeks and forehead, her platinum
blonde hair clung to her face as the nightmares flooded her
mind, the images that haunted her childhood and teenage life
making sleep almost impossible. Pressure filled her chest, the
difficulty of breathing began to set in, triggering the end of
her uncomfortable slumber as her eyes shot open, revealing the
light blue hues that enticed others in sunlight. Her breath
raced from her lips as she sat up in the bed, finding herself
unable to speak, to call out for help or even ask for some form
of company in her time of panic. Turning her body slowly towards
the edge of the bed, Alex pressed her feet down to the ground,
feeling the soft fibres of the champagne carpet between her
toes, a calm, warm feeling slowly washing over her as she rose
to her feet and moved towards the closet. Raising her hands to
her head, she gently pushed her fingers through her soft locks
of hair before taking a number of minutes to get dressed. Her
slender frame hid beneath a pair of jet black sweatpants and
mens jumper, her hands barely visible at the end of the long
sleeves.
Slipping her feet into a pair of baseball shoes and moving one
foot in front of the other, Alex made her way out of the
apartment, deciding that some night air would sooth her mind,
also giving a chance for her to observe the new surroundings,
her new home. A strong gust of wind met her as she descended the
cold, concrete staircase of the apartment building entrance, her
hands falling into the darkness of her pockets as she slowly
made her way across the sidewalk, taking the first steps of her
new life, a blank canvas. Shifting her eyes across the
environment, she noticed that the buildings where gradually
becoming more and more unappealing, smashed windows loosely
covered with boards, a clear sign of danger falling upon Alex's
shoulders as she began to question continuing. Bringing her
hands from the depths of her pockets, she wrapped her arms
around her small frame, grasping the loose material of the
jumper as she continued her journey into the unknown, her ears
picking up a mumbling of voices nearby causing her to shift the
weight onto her heels, spinning to see if it was coming from
behind her.
Nothing. Not a single person shared the sidewalk with her,
causing a soft sigh of relief to escape the small parting in
Alex's mouth before she continued her stroll through the
streets. The voices grew louder and louder as her eyes fell upon
an alleyway a few metres away from herself, but a slight panic
set in when the voices turned into moans and the sounds of
physical contact being made. Alex came to a stop just before the
alley, the grip on her jumper tightening as her eyes widened,
peering around the brick wall to see a group of men on the
ground, another approaching the entrance, causing her to gasp
and begin to move away from the alley slowly, peering over her
shoulder to see the man now on the sidewalk. Panic engulfed her
body when she saw him in possession of a knife, throwing it back
into the alley and whether it hit someone only he would know.
All the young woman could think of at that moment was getting
back to the apartment...so much so that she was prepared to run
if the man realised she had seen what had occured only moments
ago...

'Is this truly what I have allowed my life to become? A constant
struggle just to get by, fighting off would be muggers on a
daily basis? Sure it is satisfying to that because of my
actions, I may spare a couple people from being mugged, or
worse. That doesn't change the fact that I went from the top of
the world, to the bottom of the barrel. No, I am not even in the
barrel, I am beneath it.' His thoughts are grim, scorning
himself, just as he has done every night for the past three
years. Before the turn in his life had appeared, severe and
abrupt, bringing about his fall. Everything had changed so
swiftly in a single night, the blood splattered walls, the
stench in the room as he awoke, the fear that built up inside of
his chest. Every time his eyes close, these images flash behind
it. He has given up on sleeping, only allowing himself this
luxury when his body is beginning to collapse anyway. Since that
uncertain night, his feet have never stopped moving, always
pushing him onwards, bringing him farther away from home, or at
least the place he once knew as home, and into the unknown.
He begins to turn away from the alley, before his heart comes to
a dead stop. Several seconds pass, as his eyes remain transfixed
to the brilliant blue orbs that stare into his own. He takes a
step back, finally being able to move again, as all of the
muscles in his body tense. Again, just as always, he fights the
urge to flee. He has to make his actions understood, at least to
someone. The fact that more than likely he would never see this
woman again does not even matter, he just has to have someone
understand. Lips parting, he forces back the fear, making sure
his voice comes out calm, it is not deep nor high pitched,
fairly regular. "This is not what you think Ma'am. I know it
looks bad, but I swear to you I can explain." Taking in a
breathe, he allows his muscles to loosen, not be so stiff,
wishing to appear innocent as he possibly can manage.
"They were attempting to mug me, they caught me just out here as
a matter of fact, and started forcing me down the alley. I told
them, a few times in fact, that they would only end up hurt or
dead if they tried to take anything of mine. They simply did not
listen." Pausing, his green eyes staring into the woman's own
blue ones. Continuing, his voice drops slightly, the fear no
longer being contained. "They...they wouldn't listen..I had to
fight back. I had no choice..Please miss, please believe me..I
tried to let them run, I gave them the choice...I know the last
part...the only part I think you saw...was a bit drastic..but
the adrenaline got to me. I will be gone by morning anyway,
walking to the next destination."
(Sorry, terrible I know. I just woke up, and still getting used
to this character, they will get better.)

Panic began to engulf Alex's body, removing her ability to move
away from the sitution and return to the safe, warm atmosphere
within her new apartment. At this moment, she wished that her
dreams would allow her to get more than an hour of sleep so that
the idea of wandering the unknown streets of an all new
environment in the middle of the night had never entered her
mind in the first place. Her eyes continued to watch the man
closely, waiting for any kind of sudden movement from him which
would cause her body to instinctively run away, adrenaline
coursing throughout her veins, but in her mind, she was praying
that he wasn't planning on harming her in any way. Those silent
prayers caused her hands to grip onto her jumper's material as
tight as she could, even if it would make her hands ache after
just minutes, images of her poor treatment by her parents
passing through her mind just at the thought of the slightest
bit of pain being inflicted upon her.
Alex's mind had become extremely fragile towards the end of her
life at home with her family, eventually causing her to turn on
her parents wishes and be forced out, and in the months before
leaving she would be haunted by her memories both when she was
asleep and at the most unexpected moments and no matter how much
she tried to remain calm, it was nearly impossible to prevent
both the mental pain and the emotional pain that would be shown
to others. This had also resulted in it being practically
impossible for her to create any kind of connection with another
individual, something which she so desperately desired but could
not have. Realizing that she was still standing in the centre of
the sidewalk, her eyes caught the attention of the man who had
emerged from the alleyway before doing the unthinkable with a
weapon, his green hues sending a chill down her spine, but it
was a strange feeling, it didn't make her more afraid, it made
her slightly calmer infact.
Taking in a deep breath of air, she loosened the grip on her
arms slightly as the man's deep, smooth voice met her ears, the
panic in her body dissapearing more and more, but she couldn't
understand why. "Umm..." her sweet tone made its way through a
small parting in her lips as she attempted to think of something
to say to the man who wanted to explain the violent situation
she had just walked into. "Okay..I-I guess I should allow you
time to explain it..." she said said softly, her eyes slowly
looking the man up and down, taking in his features before
finding herself uncontrollably returning her gaze to the
strangers eyes. As he began to speak, telling of the events that
had unfolded, Alex's eyes widened slightly at the sound of the
word 'mug' and she could hear the mens voices in her head, the
threats, the panic that the man must have felt at that moment.
As the stranger relaxed, so did she and she somehow felt
sympathy for him, once again looking over him for an injury of
some sort. It was something instinctive for her to do as she
always put others before herself, the paranoia kicking in
whenever she finds out someone has been involved in a situation
like this exact one. Another strong gust of wind made its way
through the city, causing Alex to shiver slightly, a gasp of
breath escaping her as she nodded her head when the man had
finished explaining himself. "I..I do believe you mister" she
replied, pausing for a moment before speaking again. "Are you
okay?" she asked softly, arching an eyebrow, rubbing her hands
up and down her upper arms.
