Elemental Mastery
DIR By: Landon Yamato
Date: January 17, 2012, 4:42 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Year's had passed since his grandfather left him at those tall
iron doors, how he had wanted to follow his grandfather back
down the mountain but was unable too... He was too slow... Too
weak... Too scared. Instead he waited for those doors to open...
What seemed like an eternity had passed though to a child his
age 10 minutes with nothing to do was already forever, so his
time keeping was not to deserve pity but instead be frowned
upon.
As those doors opened and a group of men stared at him he felt
his body freeze, each had a deep penetrating glare at looked
past his flesh and into his soul, he was only 6 at the time but
felt as if he was growing older with every second. Though after
a few minutes they all turned and walked away making room for a
small young woman to walk out and pick him up, no words were
spoken and no smiles were given, instead silence, something he
felt almost uneasy about, and as he was slowly carried past the
doors he looked back to where his grandfather had gone once
more... He gazed upon the burning horizon as the world fell into
war...
Years went by as he found himself working day by day as almost a
slave, dragging roofing tiles across the large grit and stone
floor, bringing water up from the large well, shovelling snow
away from the courtyard and moving small stone statues from one
area to the next. Years went past as he moaned and groaned,
argued and refused only to be beaten into submission every time,
though slowly the pain hurt less, slowly he grew closer to their
eye level so he wasn't always looking up. At the age of 14 he
worked out why he had always been made to do the chores, not by
self discovery but when a new young child was dropped off at
those tall iron doors, and his tasks were handed onto them.
He noticed how thin they were, how weak, young... compared to
himself... 14 years of age and he was already standing tall,
muscles that he never knew he had, his body was beaten and
scared but he was strong and reliable... Though as he watched
the young children with the chores he knew something bigger was
about to hit his system, and that those chores were going to be
the best days of his life...
He was far too right for his own good as well, where as he used
to get eight hours full sleep he now only received three... Four
is lucky, he didn't have to drag tiles but instead had to break
them, and instead of moving statues he had to carry multiple,
throw them and catch them. His body was being pushed past it's
physical limits, his body almost breaking and tearing. Within
months his entire body was wrapped in bandages, blood spilled
from every crevice it could and then some, the pain drove him
insane, small whimpers would leave his lips every night as
slowly the herbal medicine seeped in burning his flesh shut.
At the age of 16 he noticed his physical training stopped, and
instead something else began to start, Being left in just his
loose orange pants he was forced to lay in the snow at night,
his skin began to freeze, frostbite scared to even try effecting
his body incase it froze itself... During the day he was forced
to sit in the burning sun, a metal plate beneath him that heated
his body back up though at the same time left layers of skin on
the plate when he moved away.
Memories of his grandfather reached him once in a while as he
laid there watching the night sky, had he hated him so much that
he had left him to die by torture? What had he ever done so
wrong to deserve this?
For six months his training was the same, but then after those
six months something new started, he was pushed into the well
and forced to learn to swim the hard way, he grasped onto the
buckets rope and prayed for days as his mentor watched, at night
he was forced to dig into the earth with his bare hands, to dig
a small pit where he would now live, his nails torn from his
skin as he hit rocks, his flesh beaten and torn in all different
directions.
Though as his 17th birthday fell upon him the training changed
again... He was thrown into the well and told to dig out, the
whole academy watched as he clung to the rope once against
scared of drowning, slowly he scraped his hand across the stone
walls until he found a loose stone, where he pulled it free. As
he looked up he noticed they all smiled... In his mentor's hand
was the rope... But what was he holding onto?
He noticed at that moment that he was swaying softly, side to
side, ontop of the water... there had never been a rope...
Memories flashed back to his head of how he had to climb down
with the bucket, fill it and climb back up...
As he looked to the wall he then began to wonder what was going
on... the stone had come loose but as he looked forward he could
see past the shadows as his fingers hadn't scrapped the stoned
out but instead pushed it... and what was behind it to one
side... on the other side of the tunnel was the pit he had
dug... Quickly he forced his way through the small tunnel and
within minutes he was back within his pit... Within his bed.
Though his lesson was far from over.
Dragged quickly from the pit he kicked and struggled before
being thrown onto the metal plate once more, his hands slammed
into his hot smooth surface and his eye's shut, he knew the pain
that would rush through him as the pain would be stuck to the
panel, though as he waited and cringed he heard people gasp
softly, he felt a soft cooling sensation run through his hands.
As he opened his eyes he was shocked, the metal was covered in a
small layer of ice... The flames beneath frozen in their
place... But how? As he looked up the tutor smiled, before
throwing small balls of snow at him? Had this suddenly turned
into a game? Into some stupid celebration? He watched as the
rest of the academy joined in and quickly he grew angry, year's
of pain, years of blood, sweat and tears and this was their way
to celebrate?
He threw his arms up into the air and began to cry out, he was
outraged by this but felt a sudden burst of warmth... The flames
beneath him burst back into life and soared into the sky above
him creating a wall of sorts between him and the academy.
The rest of the day seemed different, he was given a meal that
was fit for the kings his grandfather had once told him about,
he was treated differently, given respect... And most of all, he
was given new clothes.
Soft black trousers, a loose white and red top with golden
lining, a thick black leather belt with a golden pattern upon
it's front, black and white gloves with a steel plate across the
knuckles...
He would wear these clothes with pride, though before he could
appreciate the day to it's full extent the tall iron doors fell
from their hinges and a cry of war rushed over the academy.
Quickly student's ran to the courtyard only to be brought to
their knee's by small balls of lead and fire, his mentor grasped
his arm and dragged him out of the rear doors, the new young
children being taken with, and as they reached the back wall his
mentor released something she never had before. A small gesture
of her hand caused part of the wall to collapse, and within
seconds the cold burst of mountain air rushed past them, on the
other side of that wall was nothing, a sheer drop.
The children we're placed in his arms and then he was pointed in
the direction that led off the mountain... To jump to a death
that would be more painful than what was here but still he
couldn't refuse, she kept pushing him, tears in her eyes... And
as his feet reached the edge she kissed his, her lips soft and
warm to his own, the children screamed and then quickly he felt
everything vanish, he fell watching as she stood there smiling.
He woke up weeks later to look up at the mountain, flames still
roared on, and the children gone... around him soft snow, and
sand cushioned his landing, his clothes dirty but not damaged...
But where were the children? And who was to blame for his life
being ruined!

As he walked through the forest taking time to enjoy his stroll
and the deep rich pine smell that enveloped him for the first
time in over a decade he noticed a path that had almost been
overgrown by plants, he blew gently and they all withdrew
clearing the path for him without being damaged or trampled, it
was rare that he actually was in this peaceful a mood and rarer
still that he took the time to enjoy nature like this, so he did
not want to do it any harm, which was part of the reason that he
hadn't deemed it needed to bring his staff with him.
He turned and began heading up the path running his hands along
the tops of the wild flowers and ferns growing around the path,
feeling the life force coursing through them and feeding each
one a little bit as he ran his hand along it, by the time he
made his way back to this point from where ever this path lead
there would be more than triple the amount of them, and they
would all be fuller, grander, and far more vibrant. He came
across a rose bush and smiled, for roses were his favorite
flower of all, he channeled an amount of life force into the
rose bush equal to twice that of what he had given all of the
other flowers and ferns combined, he watched with supreme joy
and even a hint of pride as it swelled and so many roses started
sprouting that it was nearly impossible to distinguish one rose
from the other, he plucked one and placed it in his breast
pocket noticing how another rose popped up to take its place
almost immediately, maybe he had put too much life force into
this rose bush, apparently he had made the bush eternal which he
had not intended but could do nothing about it now save take it
back which he refused to do. With that he turned and continued
down the path until it intersected with another path.
He turned down this new path noting how it ran along the base of
the mountain that he had seen from the town that had prompted
his walk through the woods. As he meandered his way along this
new path he smiled as he heard all the birds chirping and
singing, it was rare that he got to hear that since normally
they were more apt to avoid him to the point that he could
barely register their existence. His day was all but made when
an eagle alighted on his shoulder and stayed there, he turned
and whispered to the eagle soothingly as he stroked it's head
with his index finger and manifested a treat for it. He returned
his attention to the path upon which he sauntered and suddenly
realized that there was a glow on the mountain that shouldn't be
there as well as what appeared to be smoke rising from the glow.
So he floated up to a point where he might be able to glimpse
what was causing it.
He saw what appeared to have been a town or possibly a school or
at the very least a compound, though there was almost nothing
left of it, it appeared as though the fire that still burned had
consumed most of what had once been there, taking a look around
making sure that the surround forest was at no risk he decided
he would just let the fire burn out on it's own. Just as he was
about to float back down to the path he noticed a hole in the
wall of whatever that place had once been, the hole sparked his
curiosity due to the fact that it looked as though another
Elementist had been the cause for the hole, as he began to float
toward the wall he sensed a slight disturbance in the elements
somewhere far below the wall. His curiosity now peeked to the
point that he couldn't ignore it even if he wanted to, he
floated to the other side of the mountain and looked down, there
appeared to be a boy no more than maybe nineteen laying on the
ground, he wondered what had happened to the boy and so he
started making a decent toward the boy, just as he was about to
alight on the ground the eagle leaped from his shoulder and with
a few strokes of it's mighty wings it was soaring high into the
sky again, Adrastos wasn't sure if he should interpret that as a
bad sign or a good one but either way he felt compelled to speak
with this boy. As he landed on the mixture of snow and sand
without a disturbance of a grain of sand or snowflake he smiled
at the boy trying to convey that he meant no harm. "My name is
Adrastos, may I ask what happened to you?" He waited for the
boys response patiently as he wondered what could have possibly
happened here.

As the man's feet planted softly into the sand and snow Falz
jumped and pushed quickly back while his feet and hands clawed
into the ground, small waves of earth around him rippled towards
the man in front of him, was this one of the men who attacked
his home? He spoke as if he cared but words could be false… But
then his body showed that he meant no harm but still something
was different… Something seemed out of place with this man. He
watched for a moment as the man smiled towards him and then he
simply nodded to himself, he needed to get away from this man
incase he mean harm, incase he was after the children of
himself.
He watched for a moment then threw his hand up to the mans face
as if to keep the mans gaze away from him, though to his
amazement the sand beneath the man shifted and flew into the air
making an almost curtain like block between them, instinctually
he took advantage of this and began to move to his feet and run
into the woodland, he knew the man would likely see this
movement, and most likely follow, though as he ran he couldn't
help but think that maybe the man didn't mean any harm, maybe he
was genuinely worried when he appeared but still it all seemed
so odd… the man had come from above… from where the burning
academy stood.
He ran down the soft dirt path's hoping to gain distance, hoping
to get away though something caught his eye, a rose bush that
flourished with life like never before… each petal vibrant and
lustful, each rose a different shade and colour… It made his
eyes widen as he grew closer, something so beautiful existed,
though it's life would be short, the soil at it's base though
good, contained chalk from the mountain, and with life as potent
as this it would seep up the moisture in the ground within
seconds before dying. He softly placed his hands on the ground
and pulled them gently towards himself, the plant followed as
the soil around it shifted it softly and smoothly, he would move
it further away… He had already gained the distance he wanted…
And now he wanted to make sure this plant would survive.

Seeing the ripples in the earth at his feet Adrastos knew he had
been right, this boy was an elementalist, though a little crude
in the practice but with lots of promise. Looking at the boy he
saw the second that the boy had decided to run, though he made
no attempt to stop him, the boy seemed to view him as a
potential threat, so he didn't want to do anything to worry the
boy more. He smiled as the curtain of sand erupted between them
obscuring his view of the boy, though that didn't matter much,
he could sense where the boy was because of the boys ability.
He began following the boy at a brisk walk having felt him stop
for some reason though he couldn't tell why. As he got closer he
saw the boy moving a rose bush and he smiled, seemed as though
they had something in common, maybe he could work with this.
"Roses are beautiful aren't they? They are my favorite flower, I
can take you to see the rose bush that I helped just a few
minutes before finding you. I apologize for scaring you if I did
in fact do that." He looked at the boy and waited for a response
careful to keep a few feet away so that he did not scare the boy
anymore than he already may have, keeping his body loose and
relaxed with a smile upon his face, trying to convey the fact
that he was merely concerned for the child and was wondering if
the boy could use some help.

Turning quickly after hearing the voice he fell backwards into
the bush, the thorns breaking against the thick clothes he wore
though still his face was cut down the side, his eyes focused on
the man and a horror stricken fear swallowed his mind and soul.
He clawed at the ground beneath him without thinking of where he
was, the rose bush beneath him being broken and damaged as he
tried to work his way away. Who was this man? What did he want?
Why was he here?
After a few moments of struggling he paused and looked around
him, though the bust still had living flowers he could feel its
very life was withered and fading fast due to the damage he had
done... The choice between his life or the plants... Any normal
person would climb to their feet and run, he knew this... He
knew he had too but he couldn't. He had spent his life learning
to respect all plants, and because of this he pushed himself to
his feet quickly and darted to the other side of the bush
keeping his eyes on the person ahead of him, and with one swift
movement pulled the plant from the ground, it's leaves and
broken stems fell to the ground.
He had little time and so he looked around hoping to find a
source of water, tree's everywhere but killing one to slave the
plant... There was no sound of a stream... Where... What was he
going to do?

He had to suppress a laugh as he saw the kid quite literally
fall all over himself, it had been a very long time since he had
seen anyone do that, and even then the last time he had seen it
it had been over a girl, not in fear. The thought that the boy
was falling all over himself in fear was a very sobering thought
for Adrastos, he was beginning to wonder if approaching this
youth had been a mistake. He smelled blood on the air and he
silently thanked the powers that be that he had moved beyond his
hunger for blood, for this boys blood almost smelled
intoxicating and made him want a taste, and if he had still been
a slave to the hunger like he was when he was originally turned
he wouldn't have been able to control himself for even a split
second.
He saw the moment that the haze of fear left the boys mind and
watched as the boy realized where he was and what he had done.
He smiled, this could potentially prove to be the opening to put
the boy at ease that he had been hoping for, he cocked his
eyebrow as the boy looked around for something, probably water,
though he couldn't be entirely sure he was quite certain that
that was in fact what the boy was looking for. Smiling he
stretched his hand out and water began to form around his hand.
More and more of it pooling around his hand until there was a
two foot around bubble of water around his hand. He walked over
to the boy very slowly but deliberately. He knew this boy was an
elementalist, there was no mistaking the energy alone, but even
in the way the boy acted it was obvious. "For a boy that has the
potential that you do you are greatly lacking in the ability to
apply your gift. I would like to know why however managed to
awaken these abilities in you did not teach you how to use them.
Now if you would let me I will heal this rose bush for you.
Hopefully that will show you what I have been trying to tell
you, that I mean you no harm."
He reached the boy and the rose bush and put the bubble of water
to the rose bush and began to smile as the water began to
surround the plant and glow slightly before being absorbed into
the plant from not only the roots but every leaf, petal, and
stem as well. When the water disappeared each petal had a
different color than any other petal, making for a rose that
very few had ever seen the likes of. Smiling at the rose bush he
stepped back a few feet to give the boy his space not wanting to
scare the boy into nearly killing the rose bush again, or even
scare the boy again period. "I mean you no harm boy, I merely
want to make sure that you are okay, and help you if you need
anything. Possibly even train you in applying that little gift
of yours in a more useful way, and possibly if you want that is,
even as a way to fight and or defend yourself." Having said his
peace he stood there waiting to see what the boy would do.

The way the man approached him made him panic, he wanted to run,
to flee and help the rose bush where this man wouldn't be a
danger but as he looked around he felt something close to him,
what he had been looking for... And as he turned to look forward
the man held his hand out, water wrapping around it... They were
the same, though the man obviously had more potential them he
had...
He watched as the water seeped into the bush and his glare upon
the man softened as he saw the man was trying to help... Though
as the man opened his mouth things he once knew as words spilled
out, though it had been so long since he last listened to words,
so long since he had tried to understand them, what he heard now
was mostly just noises though as this man stepped back he saw a
fragment of kindness he had been shown when he was back home...
When he had a home...
He placed the plant back in the ground, the earth shifting
around it to keep it safe as he smiled lightly, it would live
and he wouldn't have to feel guilty for taking its life away,
though as he turned back to the man his smiled faded and he
dropped to his knees as if to apologise. And then with a quick
motion he tried to draw the two children he had been sent out
with in the dirt beneath him, though it was only now that he
discovered his ability to actually draw was lacking in many
degrees. He frowned as he became frustrated, if he could
manipulate things better he could just mould a model of them or
create an image out of different things around him but instead
all he was able to do was stick figures.
He looked up to the man with a pleading look, he would doubt the
man he would understand and with a sigh he looked back down and
wrote with his finger. "lost"

His smile widened to the point that it was almost painful, he
had managed to make the boy understand that he meant no harm.
The boy had put the bush back in the ground and began to draw,
though Adrastos couldn't figure out what it was that the boy was
trying to draw. It looked like two people, but he couldn't tell
whether they were supposed to be the boys parents or his
brothers and or sisters or what. Then the boy wrote lost in the
ground, and Adrastos began to understand, whoever those two
people were supposed to be were lost.
Realizing that the boy couldn't speak was a mild annoyance, he
hadn't wanted to have to touch the boys mind or anything like
that. Though it seemed as though that was the only option he
had, since the boy didn't seem to understand him when he spoke.
He lightly touched the boys mind at first only with a tendril
until the boy could get used to it, though the tendril only had
a vague feeling of helpfulness to it. Then after a few seconds
he began to let more of his mind flow toward the boy, once there
was enough contact to get more than a vague feeling from the boy
he formed a picture of a sentence in his mind before sending it
to the boy. "Who is lost?"
