It wasn't hard to tell that Xo was simply humoring Zico with his
banter about the roads. his expression reeked of amusement. Zico
couldn't tell what his motivation was. Why wasn't the burly
Earthbender calling him out on his blunder? What did he have to
gain?
But it was the girl's behavior that held his attention even
moreso! His gaze settled on her as she avidly opposed accepting
his request for employment. Her skin was dark, like his own, but
that was as far as the similarities went. She had honey colored
eyes, as a fierce gaze. Her expression was harsh, and
unfriendly, but he couldn't deny that she was also very pretty!
Even so, it was clear that she didn't want him around. That
could make this plan problematic...
But Xo didn't share his student's sentiments. In fact, he agreed
without hesitation! What were the chances that the one to find
him would be such a carefree man?! Zico felt a wave of relief,
until the Master said where they were going! His eyes widened!
Capital City!? That was where the Shadow Clan had gathered;
Where they were seeking refuge! He couldn't face them! But he
also didn't have anywhere else to go, so there was only a brief
moment of hesitation.
"Alright. Capital City it is then!" He answered, brushing off
his clothes, before following the two on their path. He didn't
know what to expect, but he could only hope things would get
better from here.

After the crowd had finally dispersed to go about their day and
back to their mundane routines, she twists on her heels to get
closer to her master and the boy, unable to hide her features
from giving her thoughts on the situation away. A permanent
scowl is what she fashioned even as she chomped away on the roll
in her hand.
After swallowing the last bit she watched her teacher walk off,
instantly jogging over to him but creating a sphere in the dirt
with her right foot, so the earth would rise up, enough to trip
someone over should if it should go unnoticed. As she did so,
she turned to look at the boy, opting to distract him with her
eyes, it did the job with others pretty well. The way the light
of her eyes complimented the dark of her skin, especially in the
rising sun, was beautiful in its own way. Just like his.
She would continue to watch him turning just in time to not bump
into Xo. She watched everything around her, becoming
particularly taken by two old men playing pai sho. Xo had tried
many times to drill the rules of the game into her head but she
just didn’t get it. She wasn’t much for mental games but
physical ones like earthbending ball? Iyah was known for it.
“How long now?”
Being an earthbender really grounded her sometimes, her fiery
temperament got her in trouble countless times, both with her
master and other elders in the kingdom. Sometimes she would
ignore the advice given to her and sometimes she would utilise
it, but she knew that when he showed his blind eye, he wasn’t
joking around, which is why she was left asking countless
questions in her head about this boy and his whereabouts.
Whether he posed a threat to her, to Xo. The spirits above knew
just how much she adored the man, even if she didn’t show it.
She was so lost in her own thoughts she didn’t notice two
teenagers running around and bumped into the second boy, the one
doing the chasing.
“Watch where you’re going will you?!”
Her voice rang around them as she scowled and pushed him away,
turning back to her teacher as the boy whimpers over to his
friend.

Xo, having traveled the city so many times, marched with almost
single-minded determination. A new employee and his longest time
student in tow, Xo continued his joyous greeting of the various
people who recognized him, either as the shield or, every now
and then, The Mighty Boulder. Xo had stopped in front of a child
who had recognized him and was giving a quick flex and grunting
as he spoke in his ‘Boulder’ voice when his student nearly
collided with him.
Xo did not miss much. His seismic sense allowed him to see very
well through the small shakes in the ground and he had seen his
student was watching the employee and not where she was going
when they nearly bumped. And Xo could not blame her. He, too,
had questions for this Zico. There was a slight nervousness that
had been present in Zico’s voice when Xo mentioned the capital.
And Xo was eager to find out who and what he had walked into.
Xo gave the child one more big flex as Iyah asked her question
and he let out a monstrous laugh, even larger than normal to see
the child’s face light up.
“Not long now. Should be just around the corner up there.” Xo
placed a large mitt on the small child’s head and nearly ruffled
the poor boy off his feet before the group continued on their
way.
Xo remained face forward for the walk ahead. Keeping an eye on
his traveling companions. The wall of a man did not even stop
when he heard the thud of a collision after two teenagers darted
past him. He didn’t even turn as he heard the push and iyah
shout. What was he going to do with her? He doted on his
longest, and, arguably, his best student but the fire inside of
her hadn’t just burned him, it had burned more than a few favors
owed to him by elders around the city.
He’d hoped to see improvement in her patience and temper. And
while improvement had been had, Xo couldn’t say he knew what to
do further. At some point he had accepted that she would always
be a spitfire. At least she had never broken his cardinal rule.

Zico certainly had his hesitations about heading back to Capital
City. But it wasn't as if he had any sort of alternative plan!
He would just have to come up with one as they traveled! If he
came across the Shadow Clan, it shouldn't be hard to avoid them.
It shouldn't be hard to disguise himself, so long as his hair
didn't give him away. Nearly half the member of the Shadow and
Light Clans had either silver, or extremely light blonde hair.
But it wasn't a feature he had seen much on the mainland. There
were individuals who shared their skin tones though. So if he
could just get a hat or someth-
Whoa!
Before he could figure out what had happened, a ball of Earth
had formed at Zico's feet, tripping him, just as it's creator
had intended. However, even as the ground grew closer, Zico
never once lost his center of gravity! He fell forward, not onto
his stomack, but into a perfect handstand! His right hand hit
the ground first, followed immediately by his left! He then did
a full pivot around that left hand, and slowly bent back down
onto his feet, one at a time with the grace of a lifelong
gymnast! He continued walking as if nothing had happened!
It wasn't hard to figure out what had happened though. The girl
hadn't taken her eyes off of him once since they began walking.
IF she was Xo's student, surely that meant she was a talented
Earthbender as well! He wanted to get her back. But he also
didn't want to reveal any more about himself than he had to. He
decided instead to take note of her personality. From what he
could tell, she was impulsive, and impatient, asking her mentor
how long it would take to arrive, as if that information would
get them there any faster. Those kinds of people were dangerous.
They were the ones to throw themselves head first into any
situation without considering the consequences first. He decided
it best to associate with her as little as possible.
Even so, he took note of Xo's response, memorizing his
directions, relative to their current location. Never know if he
would need to find his way on his own one day! As the boy bumbed
into Iyah, Zico cringed slightly, honestly expecting more of an
outburst from her than she exhibited. He decided not to speak
though, unless spoken to. He was here to do a job, and nothing
more. Once he saved up a bit of money, he could decide on his
next move.

Iyah didn’t watch long enough to notice the boy land perfectly
on his hands and get up so gracefully but had an instinctive
feeling in the pit of her stomach that that was the case. He
wasn’t letting on and she knew it. From the beginning until now,
he was keeping distance between them not that it bothered her,
she preferred it that way.
The laugh shook both the man beside her and the earth beneath
her, furrowing her brows as she stomps forward, keeping the same
pace as her master.
“Serio-“
She inhaled and controlled her emotions, looking ahead to find
that they didn’t have long to get to their next destination, but
how long it would take to their last? Iyah had already
forgotten, and she knew better than to ask Zo again. She opted
to stay silent the rest of their walk, her honey eyes examining
the space around them.
When they continued up, a man raised a hand and shouted a
greeting at Xo. Iyah instinctively turned her head but found
angry eyes of none other than Zaiver staring back at her.
~
It had been 5 days since she last ate and it was pouring with
rain above her. Her stomach grumbled in protest and she gripped
the skin underneath her tattered and ripped jumper, her fingers
digging into her own flesh to calm the ache rippling underneath.
It brewed until it was unbearable, but she didn’t have a penny
to her name to buy anything. Not even a piece of bread.
Iyah’s small bare feet dug into the mud beneath her, toes
turning a light shade of blue from walking so much in the cold,
and as she turns the corner, and the night swallows the only
daylight left lingering in the sky, she notices a fairly old man
packing up for the day.
She couldn’t handle it anymore. Her mouth watered as she looked
ahead at the piece of bread on his stand and made a run for it.
Her hand reached out to grab it but the man was weary and seemed
to have eyes in the back of his head. He slapped her arm away
and turned to grab her collar, slapping her across the cheek,
then telling her off. She was made to stand there for an hour,
listening to him explain why it was so bad to steal and why we
should uphold our values.
She refused the sting of the slap to gather tears in her eyes,
and continued on her way, still hungry, but so drained she
didn’t have the energy to walk on anymore, finding some shelter
under a pavilion in one of the temples to sleep under.
~
Perhaps, he was still angry at her for past mistakes but she
ignored him and his blaring eyes. She didn’t shrivel up in shame
but stood taller, lifting her chin a little and walking a little
faster until she was ahead of Xo.

Nearly there. They had nearly reached their destination. He
could almost see Xan waiting on the platform for the now group,
he certainly didn’t think Xan would mind one more, to approach
and board so they could be off. Truth be told, this was the easy
part of the journey. Xo had managed to secure a private car but
the trip by rail could still be a day or a little more. He
hadn’t told Iyah yet because he wished to avoid her groans at
the idea of being stuck for a possible 24 hours just staring out
into blank desert for a good part of the ride. He kept his smile
up and his walking pace brisk to say hello to some people and to
possible avoid others.
Whether it was the stop to pick up the stranger or his many
stops to say hello to the people who recognized him, running
into him had become unavoidable.
It would have been disrespectful to continue on his trip when an
elder had greeted him, but Xo found the man to be rather
disrespectful in his own right. But as Xo heard his voice; his
face dropped for a moment, his mustache twitched from side to
side, and he let out a huff of air from his nostrils that
sounded much like a bull’s. Xo would perk up his face once more
and let out a massive laugh that sent the old man’s hand to his
old ears. He hoped they rung for days because Xo would not be
back tomorrow to make sure. Xo turned and faced the old man,
looking down on him from above as his grin widened.
“Zaiver. haHA! To what do I owe the pleasure? Come to see me off
to the capital? Or are you just here to glare at my students?”

Zico had largely been following silently through the city to
their destination. He considered himself to be a patient man,
but for some reason, he was growing quite antsy as they walked.
Each person who stopped to speak with the Earthbending Master
put Zico a little more on edge. He decided to distract himself
by taking inventory of his surroundings. There were several food
stalls and diners that made his stomach scream at him, but he
ignored them all. Eventually though, he saw it!
He didn't bother to stop the two Earthbenders, instead simply
falling off to the side to get a closer look. He wouldn't let
them get too far away though, quickly and discretely catching
up, only to find Xo had been stopped yet again! He advanced far
enough to stand at Iyah's side and spoke to her quietly.
"Does he know -everyone- in the city?"
It didn't seem impossible, now that he had said the words. An
outgoing and successful man like him? It wasn't surprising that
he knew a lot of people! But did every one of them have to stop
him on his path? Wasn't there someone waiting for them? He
wouldn't rush him, but he couldn't help but to feel concerned.
He fell back into his position behind the two and continued
scanning their surroundings. He would just try to relax and let
the day run it's course naturally...
