Kaida was fascinated by Calyx's answer and she listened intently
while he explained. There had always been chatter of First Ones
back home, but she had never met or seen one. Could they be the
same? Her kind had always assumed they had either died out or
left to a better place long ago but old writings and stories
passed down by descendants had mentioned the First Ones. Greater
dragons from which all her kind were descended, with beastly
roars instead of silver tongues.
There had once been more texts but humans had destroyed a lot of
their history scrolls when they raided the clan who cared for
them in an attempt to find information on how to kill dragons
more easily. To find out something similar lived here was almost
unbelievable. It was so exciting! Had they travelled here from
her world? Had they existed here first and then spread to what
she called home? Were they completely different? She had so many
questions but she knew now was not the time to get her answers.
Maybe later she could ask, they certainly seemed to be about to
have plenty of time.
She was grateful for his offer of help in the bathroom. In truth
she had been nervous of using the shower but not out of being
unable to stand. She didn't like to admit it but she was scared
to be left alone. Kaida knew that if he returned to the other
room, she would spend however long it took to get clean worrying
and imagining scenarios in which humans had followed them back
here... She shuddered at even the thought but quickly pushed it
from her mind before it developed further.
"I wouldn't mind some help, please." She was curious at his
reaction to his own question, so she leant forward slightly to
find his reflection in the mirror. "You don't have to look if
you don't want to." She was amused by him, so she smiled as she
reached to the back of her neck to untie the delicate strap that
held the fabric up. In one gentle tug, the knot came loose and
the bloodied silk fell to the ground leaving her bare, if not
for the bandage on her leg. She was unsure about whether or not
she should get it wet, but she decided it still needed to be
cleaned and it had probably stopped bleeding by now.
"Will you tell me more things while I shower?" She didn't really
care what he talked about, she just wanted to listen. She found
every word from his mouth fascinating, even if it was just about
water pipes. And if he was feeling unsure about offering to stay
while she showered, perhaps this would be a welcome distraction
for him. She guessed maybe he felt awkward and hoped talking
would help relax him.
Carefully, Kaida stepped beneath the water, her hand resting on
Calyx's shoulder for support. The warmth washed over her and she
couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. She let the water
fall onto her head and rush down around the spines on her back,
enjoying the sensation for a moment.
The combination of the light above them and the water over her
soft scaled flesh made it look like her body was covered in
stars, twinkling with every movement. The blood easily started
to rinse off, leaving a rather horrific sight beneath her feet,
but she was just happy to be getting clean and with every
passing moment more of her shining skin was revealed from
beneath the deep crimson. She let go of Calyx for a moment so
that she could untie her bandage, hoping he had more if they
needed them but if not she could turn her dress into one.
Gently, she pulled the cloth away from her wound to inspect it,
keeping her body beneath the water to finish rinsing off the
blood and dirt. It was the first time she had really seen it
properly and she cringed at the sight. Dried blood caked her
leg, but at least it didn't look too swollen or red. She lifted
her leg carefully and reached around to the back of her thigh,
delicately tracing her fingers over the flesh there to find the
exit wound to check if that were swollen but it felt no more
swollen than the first.
Relieved, she lowered her leg and attempted to rest some weight
on it, though regretted it instantly as her knee buckled. She
squeaked as she reached out to Calyx to stop herself from
falling, her hand clutching at him desperately so as not to hit
the ground.

---------------------------------------------------------
Calyx stripped down to nothing more than his shorts somewhat
bashfully. It wasn't that he was self-conscious about his body,
of course. Years of training had left him in flawless shape,
save for a few unsightly scars. There was something else that
bothered him. For some reason his human body felt inferior next
to a true Dragon! He felt like a cheap imitation, but he got in
the shower with Kaida and supported her weight as she bathed
herself.
Kaida's request to tell her about something probably provided
the distraction that both of them needed! Hazel colored eyes
traveled to the ceiling as he thought about what he could tell
her about. The truth was, he still had little experience in this
world too, so maybe he could explain more about what he -did-
know!
"The Dragon's Den is it's own Realm, separate from this world or
any other." He explained.
"No one can enter it unless they have Draconic lineage, or are
invited by a current resident."
Or they have extremely powerful magic
The thought his him as he recalled the time Soraya's mother
popped in on everyone without warning. He shook the thought,
eyes now settling on the pool of blood gathering at the floor of
the shower. It was a gruesome sight to say the least, but his
expression never shifted to one of fear or disgust. He had never
been to war like his father, but he had grown into a disciplined
young man, and it took a lot to throw him off his game!
A lot, like an innocent shower with a girl...
"I think you'll enjoy it." He said, attempting to distract
himself once more. But now that he was free to speak freely, he
didn't know what he wanted to say!
Kaida's visage was quite entrancing. And not even necessarily in
the way one would expect! Yes, she was attractive and
everything, but what she would see in herself as normal, Calyx
saw as majestic! Exotic even! She wasn't like him in that she
was pure blooded, but she also wasn't like the Dragon's back
home! She was a beautiful creature unlike any he had seen
before, and he wasn't exactly sure what to do with that
information!
When she removed the bandage, Calyx also turned his head to
inspect the wound. though the area was caked in dry blood, the
wound itself was clean. It would heal well. His face flushed
once more when she lifted her leg, however, and he turned away
once more, willing his body not to react to the somewhat erotic
situation he had found himself in. He may have been well
disciplined, but he was still a man, after all! He erected his
posture, and looked straight ahead.
He reacted quickly, however, when Kaida's leck buckled! He
caught her by the waist, and held her up with his own body.
"Are you alright?" He asked, his voice now laced with concern.
"I think we should get you off your feet."
Once she was prepared, he would help her out of the shower and
into her shawl. He would walk her to her bed, making sure he was
comfortable before grabbing his bag and rebandaging her thigh.
"Let me know if it's too tight, okay?" He asked. He would
probably only be able to bandage it once more before having to
replenish his supply. But then, shopping would be a necessity
soon anyway. They needed food, she needed clothing, and he
needed a plan. He headed over to his own bed and took a seat.
Something told him that Kaida may still be restless after
everything that had happened, but the exhaustion would hit her
soon. He wanted to ask her about her home, but considering the
situation, he figured it would be best to keep quiet. He folded
his hands behind his head and looked up at the ceiling. He would
stay awake until he was sure that Kaida had fallen asleep.

When Calyx undressed, she found her eyes drifting across his
body, taking in the scars and strange smooth skin. It was so odd
to her that he looked so much like just a man even though he was
much more and part of her wished he would show his draconian
features again like he had before. Asking him to do so felt rude
or intrusive, so she kept the thought to herself. Although, to
her he felt exotic and that was rather... exciting? She realized
however that her eyes were still looking down at his body while
she had been thinking all of this, so she turned her attention
to bathing.
She nodded in thought as he explained more about the Dragon's
Den, interested even further with each new piece of information.
If it was a separate realm, did that mean travelling to it
required the same kind of magic her mother had used? Kaida
wondered if she would be able to learn this kind of magic
herself, maybe Calyx could teach her, or one of the other
dragons?
"I'm very much sure I will, I'm excited to see it!" Kaida
smiled, truly meaning what she had said. She could feel his gaze
on her now and she glanced up to find him looking down at her
body. Usually this was something that would have no affect on
her, she quite often bathed naked with friends at home and it
was perfectly acceptable to see each other's bodies. His gaze
felt... different. A warmth rose to her cheeks as she blushed
lightly and she felt strange, though she couldn't put her finger
on why.
When Calyx caught her, she held onto him tightly and nodded, the
tone of his voice making her smile again. He cared. It was
enough to almost make her forget about the throbbing ache in her
thigh.
"I'm fine, just... unstable." She hated that she was injured,
she felt weak and feeble. She was glad her mother had packed a
knife in her bag so she had some sort of defence while she was
compromised, should she need it.
Carefully climbing out of the shower, she dried herself with the
towel Calyx had given her earlier then draped her shawl around
her shoulders. She would definitely need new clothes. The shawl
barely reached just past her hips, leaving her bare legs exposed
and the bottom of her rump. Thankful for Calyx's help with the
bandage, she let him tie it before laying down. Although the bed
was incredibly comfortable, she felt a little exposed so she
adjusted the cushions and fidgeted around with the blanket until
she had built herself a small soft wall to back up against. She
settled herself in, feeling much better for it, then turned her
eyes to Calyx.
"This is such a strange world," she sighed, a small frown on her
brow. "I know I'll get used to it eventually... but I have so
many questions. The wheeled things outside, the noises, the
smells..." she paused to yawn, her eyes drifting slowly closed
and her voice getting softer. The exauhstion had finally hit her
like a wall now that she was laying down. She wasn't this tired
a moment ago and she wanted to stay awake to talk to Calyx! How
frustrating. "It's just all so... confusing, and a little scary.
There are so many men here... how am I going to hide...?" Her
brow furrowed once more as she tried to keep herself awake, but
before she could listen to the answer, she had already drifted
off to sleep.

Calyx agreed with Kaida's accessment. This -was- a strange
world... But it had it's methods to it's madness just like the
worlds the two Dragonkin came from.
"Ask as many questions as you like." Calyx responded. However,
after a short rant, and a probing question, she fell asleep.
Calyx turned out the lights and followed her example, falling
into a world of dreams quickly.
In Calyx' dream, Kaida maintained no humanoid form. She was a
fully grown Dragon, walking on four legs, and toppling
buildings in her search for her mother. Every step she took left
an eight inch indention in the ground, and civilians were in a
state of panic, trying to escape the monster that had, for some
reason, come to destroy the only home they knew.
Calyx flew alongside her, trying to convince her that this
wasn't the way to conduct her search, but it was as if she
didn't hear him at all! She continued to walk, bending down only
to look through windows, and grunt angrily when she didn't find
her mother within their confines. In his frustration, Calyx
squeezed his eyes closed and screamed!
"Why won't you listen to me!?"
But when his eyes opened, he found the dragon collapsed on the
ground! He flew down to her face and looked on in horror at what
he observed... The dragon's eyes didn't belong to Kaida, but to
Ember! His sister lay on the ground, dead. Her emerald green
eyes drained of all life! His heart sank into his stomach. The
sky turned a deadly black, and then came the cry of the Phoenix!
Calyx popped out of his sleep to an erect position in an
instant! A cold sweat on his skin, he looked around the room. The
sun had yet to rise, but sleep was no longer an option. Calyx
rose from the bed and dressed himself in a pair of sweatpants
and a sleeveless shirt. He was going to have to get food for
KAida, and that meant he was going to have to find a way for her
to go out. Her injury was already going to draw attention to
her, and her horns... Calyx really wished he had some sort of
affinity for Illusion techniques. Unfortunately, he had none.
But maybe he could find a cloak for her to wear at least! He
made his way out the door as quietly as he could, and headed
into town.
The Sun beat Calyx back to their room, but he came back with
some helpful things, including a wheelchair, two dresses, and a
dark Cloak. It wasn't stylish, but it would cover Kaida's horns
while out in public. He peeked around the corner to see if she
was still asleep, not wanting to wake her if he had indeed
returned before her eyes made their way open.

---------------------------------------------------------
Although Kaida had built herself a make-shift nest to feel safe
in her bed, nightmares still plagued her sleep. Flashes of
memories from the evening before exaggerated into more gruesome
and vicious scenes. Men twice their normal size with red eyes
and evil sneers, carrying great weapons built solely for the
purpose of destruction. Dragons of all ages fell from above and
crashed into the ground - some landed in the clearing, some
landed amongst the trees. Those too small to knock the tree to
the ground were instead left skewered on the thick branches, the
leaves soaked red with their blood. Kaida sobbed as she watched
her fellow kin being torn apart by monsters, trying to scream
but unable to make a sound no matter how hard she tried.
She struggled so desperately to fly to their aid, to rip those
beasts apart but something held her down. She wriggled and tried
to open her wings but whatever it was, it was stronger than even
her full form. She turned her neck and saw thick chains pinning
her to the ground, two men at the end of each. Behind them
wasn't her home though, now they were in the new world. Tall
buildings stood either side of her and the ground beneath her
feet was hard and man-made. Footsteps approached from her left
and as she turned to look she heard a voice.
"Disgusting beast." A man stood before her, the tallest
and most brutish she had ever seen, covered in so much hair she
could barely make out his deep red eyes.
"Why?" Kaida cried, tears streaking down her cheeks.
"Sport." Without another word, he lifted the very weapon
that had injured her leg and pressed it to her head. The metal
was cold and harsh against her scaled flesh and she could see
through the grizzly beard on his face that he was smiling. She
shut her eyes tight and for a brief second there was silence.
This was it, she was going to become a trophy on his wall. Her
horns would be torn from her skull and set on a plaque for him
to show off whenever he pleased. She would never make it home...
Bang.
"Calyx!" Kaida scrambled out of her nightmare with a yelp,
clutching at the bed sheets beneath her. It took her a moment to
remember where she was but as she looked around, it soon came
back to her. She looked across to Calyx's bed to find that he
was gone and for a brief second she was worried, but when she
took a breath to think about it, she suspected he had probably
gone to find breakfast. There didn't seem to be any food in this
room and although they were different, she doubted he didn't
have a stomach.
Kaida sat up and stretched, the nightmare gradually fading from
her mind as she gingerly moved her injured leg to test it. It
still ached, but the pain was bearable. She looked to the window
and could see the sun was already up, so she carefully stood and
hobbled her way over, leaving her mother's shawl behind. Unsure
of whether or not humans could see her through the glass, she
stood carefully behind the curtain and peeped around it, looking
for the sky. She smiled to herself as she soaked up the sun on
her face and chest, glad of its welcoming warmth. It was here
she was stood when Calyx returned. Hearing his careful footsteps
entering, she turned quickly with the thought of it being
someone else. When her eyes landed on him, she relaxed and
breathed a smile.
"Good morning."

He wasn't entirely sure why, but he felt a tinge of nerves when
he entered the hotel room. Perhaps it was the possibility that
it could be empty upon his return, or Kaida could have hurt
herself in his absence. His nerves proved to be unfounded,
however, when Kaida greeted him upon his entry. Calyx rubbed the
back of his head in response to her greeting.
"I was hoping to be back before you woke up."
In his own way, his words were an apology for leaving her alone
without warning. His eyes were apologetic as well, but the chair
that he pushed was a bit distracting. It barely fit through the
door with it's bulky wheels, but the leather seat appeared
rather comfortable!
"Are you hungry?" He asked. He figured she must be, because he
was STARVING. But he didn't know her tastes, and didn't want to
bring back something that she wouldn't want to eat.
"I got you some stuff so we can find some food!" He pulled his
bag off his back and showed her the blue, purple, and yellow
dresses he had collected. They weren't quite as revealing as the
one she had worn the night before, but they were each stylish
in their own way, and each showed a bit of skin. HE also pulled
out the cloak that she could use to cover her horns. It was far
from a lot, but he was working with limited resources. In fact,
he now had less than 200 dollars remaining. He needed to come up
with a plan, and quickly

Kaida was relieved Calyx had returned. Although she had been
sure he would come back, part of her had still been concerned in
case he had just left her, or even had a run in with humans and
was stuck somewhere. She had never really felt concern like that
for someone else before, her kin had always supported one
another and been there to help each other but they never really
worried about each other. Dragons would randomly disappear for
years at a time without so much as a 'goodbye' and then return
one day as though they had never left, so to not see someone for
a while was perfectly normal. Calyx being suddenly gone had been
an odd feeling. Though she had barely really known him a few
hours, she was quite fond of him.
Nevertheless, he was back now and had brought things with him.
"That's alright, I haven't been up for long. What have you
brought?"
Her gaze dropped to the chair he had managed to squeeze into the
room and she raised a brow curiously. She had never seen such a
thing, but it was clear it was intended for sitting in. She
hobbled closer to get a better look, using the bed for stability
as she moved across the room.
"A chair?" She inspected it with great interest, running her
fingers over the leather and poking at the rubber on the wheels.
"How useful!" She proclaimed with a smile, grateful he had
thought of a way for her to rest her leg yet allow her to go
outside.
At the mention of food, she gasped and nodded eagerly. In truth,
her last meal had been almost 48 hours ago. In preparation for
the feast at the naming ceremony, she hadn't eaten at all that
day so that she could eat more through the night. With what had
happened though, that had obviously been a poor decision as she
now ached with hunger. She ran her hand across her bare stomach
absent mindedly as he showed off the dresses he had picked out.
They were very pretty and she certainly found them appealing.
She ran her hands over each dress before deciding on the blue
one. It was, after all, her colour. Carefully, she lifted it
over her head and slipped into fabric, being cautious of her
horns so that she didn't tear it. She fiddled with it for a
moment to settle it onto her slender frame, surprised to find
that it fit near enough perfectly. He had a good eye for size
and she was grateful. She draped the cloak over her head and
although it felt stuffy to have her horns tucked away, she knew
it was necessary. She took a small step back and held her arms
out in a 'ta-dah' sort of motion, looking to Calyx for approval.
"What do you think? Do I look human?" She smiled and although
she was saddened at the fact she had to hide who she was, she
knew that being out in the open was dangerous. She hoped someone
at his home would be able to help her learn more magic so she
could conceal her traits without needing to wrap herself up.
As she thought this, her stomach gave a soft rumble and her
cheeks flushed lightly. Kaida carefully lowered herself into the
strange chair, grimacing as her leg ached but determined not to
cause more fuss over it. "I definitely think food is our
priority... where will we find some?"

The question should have been a simple one. But it had a complex
answer. To Calyx, Kaida could never look like a human.
Everything from her energy, to her scent, to the faint lines of
scales made in abundantly clear to him that she was something
far more. She was bold and exotic, while humans were the most
basic of creatures. Odd that he would think that, considering he
was part human, but it was fact. Kaida was far from basic. But
could she fool a human into believing she was one of them?
"Yeah, you'll fit in just fine." He said with a smile, before
helping her into her chair, and pushing her out the door,
ensuring the key was secured in his pocket before allowing the
door to close. "Humans have places called Restaurants, where you
can pay people to serve you food." He explained. Purchasing
groceries would be pointless, since he didn't have a kitchen to
cook in, however.
"What kind of food do you like?"
It was an important question. He knew well how varied the tastes
of Dragons could be. For example, his father liked all of his
food chilled if not frozen. Cooked food was at the bottom of his
tastes, and he would be a bit grumpy if someone served it to
him. He pushed the chair into the elevator as he awaited her
answer, and pressed the "Floor" Button. They would then make
their way out into town, which was now far busier than it had
been the night before. Cars moved steadily in the heavy traffic,
and the sidewalks were bustling with pedestrians on their daily
routines. It was scenery that Calyx wasn't used to, but even so,
it wasn't completely foreign. All he had to do was act natural.
Calyx had seen a Seafood place down the street, as well as a
Burger Joint, and a Pizza place! He had had pizza a few times
before. Definitely something he wouldn't mind having again! Of
course, Fish was his favorite, but he was always open to trying
new things as well! Everything here was probably brand new to
Kaida though. He would need to assess what she told him about
her tastes, and figure out how it translated into human food!
Hopefully, they could find something he would enjoy!

Kaida was relieved by his answer. In truth she knew she would
stick out, but his smile made her feel better about it. At least
she wouldn't be alone out in the open city. What would she have
done if he hadn't found her? She dreaded to think of such a
thing, she would more than likely be laying dead back where she
had first arrived. Maybe even worse.
Upon hearing Calyx's explanation, Kaida's eyes widened in
amazement. Back home they would cook for one another in a crude
sort of way. Their limits stretched to throwing meat on a fire
until it was charred, or even just asking a fire dragon for
their breath. They would often have great feasts whenver there
was an occasion to celebrate, but it was more of a group affair
rather than having a designated dragon to cook. She didn't think
she would ever get used to the surprise she felt every time she
learnt something new here. She pondered for a moment at his
question and chewed on her lower lip thoughtfully.
"Well, there isn't a lot I wouldn't eat, really. We keep our own
livestock back home; cows, pigs, sheep. Apparently years ago we
stole them from humans, but it made a lot of trouble." She
shrugged her shoulders and pulled the shawl tighter around her
head as the doors of the elevator opened. "Not that it made much
difference, we still fight anyway." It was true, the humans and
dragons spent a lot of their time fighting. Usually it would be
one or two from each group who had bumped into one another on
each others land, there would be arguing, maybe fighting
depending on the dragon. Sometimes the human would end up on the
wrong side of the dragons claw, or sometimes the dragon would be
outnumbered and be dragged back to the human settlement where
they wouldn't have to butcher their livestock that week.
Kaida gave a soft gasp as she saw the change in scenery, the
blood draining from her cheeks as she paled at the sheer number
of people. So many humans! And all of them looking so... busy.
Like ants in a colony, they weaved in and out of each other
barely even looking at one another. Not a single greeting was
passed amongst any of them, they just ignored one another and if
anything, that made her feel even more nervous. She turned a
little in the chair to look up at Calyx.
"Maybe this isn't such a good idea-" she had started to say, but
as she breathed in she caught the smell of something wonderful
and it was as though all of her fear had drained away to be
replaced with the hunger she had forgotten. Something that smelt
so much more delicious than anything she had smelt before! It
was beef, she knew that for certain, but there was more to it.
It smelt... smokey. Like it hadn't just been thrown on a rock
and sprayed with fire, but properly grilled. And there were
other smells too! So many smells that drowned out the pollution
and smoke she had smelt the night before. This was...
other-worldly!
"Oh!" She squeaked, fidgeting in the chair excitedly and almost
forgetting herself for a moment. If there was one thing she
loved more than shiny gold, it was good food. "Oh, something
smells so good!" She looked around desperately to try and pin
point where it was coming from, her eyes landing on the burger
joint. "I think it's coming from there!" She breathed in and
closed her eyes, her stomach rumbling in anticipation. Even the
humans couldn't put her off now.

"When Kaida pointed out the Burger location, Calyx looked up at
it. He had never dined at that particular location, but Kaida
was right; It smelled heavenly! He pushed her chair up to the
building, thankful that they had a ramp, and the two went
inside. The line wasn't long, but something about the inside of
the building didn't sit right with Calyx. He scanned the
building discretely, but didn't see any immediate threats, so he
approached the line, and waited his turn, remaining on high
guard the entire time.
When they arrived at the front, Calyx ordered for the both of
them; Two double cheeseburgers, two orders of fries, and two
strawberry milkshakes. He paid for their meal and politely
moved to the side, thinking about ways he could go about making
more money. A manager gestured them to a table, and informed
them that their food would be brought to them. Calyx rolled
Kaida to the table and took a seat and leaned in toward her.
"Kaida." He said in a hushed voice. "Does anyone in here look
familiar to you? Don't turn your head, just look discretely."
As he finished his statement, the waitress came to the table
with their food, and politely told them to enjoy. Calyx smiled
and thanked her before turning his attention back to Kaida,
offering her a smile as well. "Give it a try!" He told her,
demonstrating how to eat the burger. He wore a happy
expression, but his senses remained trained outwardly. He was
almost certain they were being watched, and he would absolutely
find out by who...
