How does one "Feel?"
By: Zoran Date: January 2, 2020, 1:20 am
---------------------------------------------------------
It's incredibly easy to fool a being that relies on it's senses
to perceive the world.
Sight, Scent. Touch... They're all just the way bundles of
nerves respond to stimulus. Tweak the nerves, tweak the
perception. Humans are the easiest of all. They have virtually
no sense of extrasensory perception. If their eyes tell them
what reality is, they'll believe it without a second thought. It
made hiding among them as easy as breathing for one such as
Zoran; Who handled the senses like toys. He could rule over them
with minimal effort, a God among rats. But he never saw the
appeal in ruling over civilization. Groups of people were
boring; Predictable. They followed the grain like sheep to
pasteur.
Individuals however... were far more interesting. Their
motivations and habits were far more interesting and varied.
Zoran took amusement in observing them in their daily lives,
trying to make sense of all the chaos. On this day, he sat at an
outside table of a downtown Denver restaurant. He sipped from
his coffee as he watched them bustle by. A mother rushing to
work after dropping her child off at school. A businessman on
the phone with his wife, desperately trying to cover up his
affair. It was like thousands of books traveling the sidewalks,
begging to be read for filth! There were countless dimensions
where Zoran could make his home, among others like himself; But
let's be honest! Humans were simply more fun to watch! And
though they were rare, other creatures who resided among them
were even more interesting! They always seemed to be hiding from
something! Zoran watched two teenagers walk down the sidewalk
holding hands as the waiter refilled his cup. Skipping school no
doubt. And from the looks of it, headed toward...Well, nowhere
two high school students have any business at nine in the
morning...
He would soon make his way to do something productive. But for
now, he would just sit back and enjoy his morning paper...

It was a good morning for a walk. Sunset didn't particularly
love the city -- too many feels -- but duty called, and it was a
nice day. The morning sun warmed her perfectly and she couldn't
help but to turn her face up towards it and soak in the rays.
She could almost feel the energy soaking in through her pores.
Almost better than coffee. Almost.
She popped into the little cafe, and ordered her favorite fancy
latte. It was only a few minutes before her name was called and
she wrapped her fingers around the cup - a real glass mug, not
one of those weightless paper abominations - and headed back
outside to snag a good people watching table. But the most
important thing first.
She cradled the cup more firmly and enjoyed the warmth seeping
into her fingers. The little leaf the barista made with the
foam was so adorable and she couldn't help but admire the
craftsmanship. She inhaled the aroma coming off the cup and
sighed contentedly, her eyes sliding closed gently, before she
brought the cup to her lips and allowed herself the first taste
of sweet caffeine.
The little ritual had started as a way to reduce anxiety when
she was feeling too much. If there were too many people with
too many strong emotions, her protective mental walls crumbled
and she was overwhelmed with the invading vibes. It could send
her into an almost catatonic state if she went too long without
something to ground her in her own body. The first time her
mother realized what was happening and shoved a steaming flagon
under her nose saved her life. Somewhere over the years, she
found that she just enjoyed taking the time to savor her warm
morning drink.
After a few more sips, Sunset relaxed into her seat and ever so
slowly lowered the mental walls that barred her from feeling
others' emotions and let her ability creep outward, picking up
on a hint here and a tinge there from the mug, table and chair
she was touching, out and over the next empty table. She allowed
it to keep creeping, until suddenly, it felt like she had
smacked a concrete slab.
There was... nothing. A black hole.
Intrigued, she opened her eyes and found herself locking gazes
with the most beautiful man she had ever seen.
The pain evident to her, swirling behind his eyes, took her
breath away. But... she still felt nothing. Her head tilted
slightly in confusion as she probed further.
She had been sent to the city to expand her empathic abilities.
It seemed she had found the perfect teacher.

It was rare that Zoran interacted with the subjects he watched.
They were more of a form of entertainment, much like television.
Also, he rarely felt the need for social interactions,
especially with humans. But on rare occasions, there would be
someone unique enough to tempt him, and make him want to break
that pattern. It turned out, today was one of those occasions.
She made her way into the Coffee Shop, ordered her drink and
took in it's warmth as if it was the light of her world! There
was no drama or chaos with her. Just a serenity of sorts... Was
she... Fae, of some sort? He wasn't sure, but she was certainly
beyond the humans who were walking by. Far beyond... She was
beautiful! Small frame; He probably had a full foot on her, in
this form at least. A beautiful black cloud of hair, and
flawless brown skin... But even that wasn't enough to draw him
from his seat.
Not until she sat down, and her aura opened up! It was different
from anything Zoran had witnessed before. Most people's aura was
like a bubble that surrounded them and separated their essense
from those around them. But hers was different. It melded with
any energies that it came into contact with. It both effected,
and was effected by the auras of others to an extent far beyond
what Human empathy was capable of! He needed to know more....
And then her aura met his own. Surely it was a new experience
for her. His aura worked much differently than most. It's
infernal nature gave off very little, and surely it had caught
her attention! She opened her eyes, and their gazes met. Her
expression was hard to read at first. It carried a
breathlessness, but that could be for a number of reasons. It
was soon, however, followed by the familiar appearance of
confusion, nay, curiosity?
Zoran offered her a smile as he grabbed his cup from the table
and stood to his feet. The breeze in the cool Denver air was
more apparent from his standing position, and he took a second
to enjoy it before making his way over to the woman's table. He
took a sip from his cup, remaining standing for the time, as he
had not been formally invited to join her. A contented sigh
passed his lips as he lowered the coffee and looking down at the
young beauty. "Magic in a cup, no?"
His tone was airy, yet confident.
"May I?" he asked, gesturing to the seat opposite the woman. He
had no intention of impeding on her space if she'd rather be
alone. But if her curiosity matched his own, then just maybe,
she would extend the arm of hospitality, and offer him a moment
of her time...

It startled Sunset a little when he stood up and approached her
table, a little half smile gracing his lips before he took a sip
of his own drink.
She was so fascinated with his black hole of an aura and how he
cut through her own like a shark in water that she missed his
first words to her. It was so different from the humans that she
was used to reading. They were incredibly open and easy to help.
This... this wasn't human, she realized.
She blinked up at him as he asked to sit and found herself
nodding dumbly. He was even more beautiful up close.
Distractingly so. She wanted to run her fingers through his
locs. She could look into his tortured eyes forever. And, Gods,
his lips...
Sunset mentally shook herself and smiled as he sat. Pure
curiosity drove her to offer her hand to shake. Maybe touch
would give her abilities a boost and allow her to peek through
his wall. "Sunset. Nice to meet you."

"Zoran." The Half-Demon would as he took his seat and extended
his hand to the woman, looking her in the eye with a smile. For
a split second, his eyes would appear inverted; A pitch black
sclera, with a white pupil, but in an instant, they would appear
normal, like it was a trick of the light. Well, perhaps "normal"
isn't quite the right word. Zoran's eyes were pitch black, but
it almost appeared as if there was something behind them, moving
around. There was a depth to them that few were given the
privilege to explore.
"So let me guess..." He said as he sat back in his newly
acquired seat, and took a sip of his coffee. The people that
walked by had lost his attention now. It was entirely fixated on
the creature with whom he shared a table.
"Empathy." He took another sip before continuing.
"That's your ability. Some sort of hyper-sensitive empathy."
That much he was almost certain of. He wasn't entirely sure how
it worked, but he could read that much off of how her aura
interacted with others. But how much could she see? How much
could she influence? He had many questions about her and her
ability. But he didn't need them all answered immediately. That
would be no fun! For now, he just wanted to enjoy the luxury of
sitting at a table with a total stranger!
How out of character...

He - Zoran - took her hand for a moment as he sat down and for
that instant, she could feel... so much. Everything. It was
almost like he *was* all five senses all at once. In the same
instant his eyes flashed, the colors turned the wrong way. Then
he released her hand and sat back in his seat. She blinked.
Unconsciously she mirrored his relaxed posture.
The moment left her shaken and feeling like she was in way over
her head. She had never expected to meet a demon in Dever but
here he was. His nature didn't bother her. Quite the opposite,
Sunset was even more intrigued. She took a fortifying sip of her
coffee before answering him.
"Yes, empathy is my ability. And yours is... " she paused,
pondering the brief glimpse she had gotten.
"Some sort of physical... manipulation? It felt fascinating.
Really intense. Of course, it's normal for you so probably not
as overwhelming as it seemed to me since I've never experienced
anything like that before. Sorry. I'm rambling. I get nervous
around pretty people."
Her eyes widened at the realization of what she had just said
out loud. But it was too late to take it back now.
" I'm gonna stop talking and let you actually answer the
question. Is it physical manipulation or am I off base?"
She leaned forward, eyes intent on his. She might be a little
intimidated but who knew if she'd ever meet a demon again? She
was determined to pick Zoran's brain if he'd let her.

Zoran's eyes scanned Sunset's body language. She didn't seem to
notice it, but she had taken on his relaxed stance. Amusing to
say the least, but he didn't bother to speak on it. There were
many aspects to the Fae woman that he had yet to explore. If
such a short contact had brought her to mirror his level of
comfort, even if only for a moment, he couldn't help but wonder
how a more.... prolonged contact would affect her. He shook the
thought to take in what she had to say.
First, she confirmed his suspicions, which he had been almost
90% sure about. But then she made an attempt at his ability as
well. It wasn't a bad guess. But definitely not accurate. Zoran
remained silent, a slight grin on his face as the woman
continued to ramble, even after she referred to him as "pretty."
Zoran was accustomed to making people nervous. It happened
often. But to his knowledge, he had never done so because the
person thought he was attractive! He would stick that one in his
back pocket, for the time being.
Once she was finished with her tirade, he would hold up his
index finger as if to say "One minute." That wasn't his intent
however. It was a simple misdirection technique commonly used by
human magicians. The objective was simply to direct her eyes to
his finger for just a second. Then, with the same finger, he
would point down at Sunset's cup, which would appear to be
boiling! The bubbles lining the rim of the cup appeared as real
as her own skin, and she could even hear the sounds of the
liquid boiling as if it were being heated on a stove!
"Take a sip." He said, a challenging eyebrow raised up, as if to
say "I bet you won't!"
If she accepted his dare, the drink wouldn't be scalding at all!
But rather rich and smooth, with a whole new vibrant flavor
completely different from what it had originally been!
"Someone watching from the outside might say that my ability is
Illusion. And they wouldn't be wrong. But it's a bit more
complicated than that. I can alter and tweak all five of the
senses to my will."
This secondary was actually a form of hypnosis. And Sunset had
already fallen victim to it, despite being unaware. But Zoran's
ability had another level; One that made him truly terrifying.
He wouldn't mention that though. Not yet at least.

She raised an eyebrow when he (rather rudely) held up a "one
moment" finger, and then pointed down at her now boiling cup of
coffee. Before she could bemoan him ruining her cup and not his
own, he dared her to taste it.
Sunset's eyes narrowed slightly. He didn't seem malevolent as he
explained that his ability was part illusion and part
controlling the senses themselves. In fact, she'd almost call
the look in his eyes playful. Like he was taking enjoyment in
toying with her. So she had to assume that the boiling was only
visual and the drink itself was untouched.
Maintaining eye contact, she lifted the cup. It wasn't hot as
she suspected. She raised it to her lips and took a very
cautious sip. The flavor that exploded across her tongue was
definitely NOT coffee! She couldn't help but to take another
taste. It was like nothing she had ever tasted before. Full
bodied and bold like coffee but more, almost like he had taken
the subtle notes and turned them up to full blast.
"This is amazing!" Sunset took another sip and set the cup on
the table. "So, what you're saying is you changed me and the not
coffee, right? That's such a cool ability." She studied him, her
head tilting slightly as she thought.
"How far does your control go, exactly? Tweaking my tastebuds is
cute but that's a lot of power you have there."
Sunset was impressed despite her nonchalant tone. Being
sensitive, she could usually detect psychic attempts, but she
had totally missed his. Maybe that meant it wasn't a psychic
ability at all. Nonetheless he was a powerful being and she was
looking forward to gleaning any information she could about him.

The smirk on Zoran's face widened as Sunset tasted the beverage.
It was often simple tricks like this that gave him the most
enjoyment. Catching people off guard with misdirection and
slight alterations to their nervous system. Of course, this act
was immediately followed by questions. Typically those questions
would go unanswered. But then, it was rare for Zoran to meet
others that didn't belong, like him.
"That's right." He said, in response to Sunset's inquiry about
whether it was her that had been altered, and not the coffee. To
prove his point, he snapped his finger, an act that had no real
consequence. But at the same time, he released her from the
effects of his hypnosis, allowing her to perceive her coffee as
she had before. He thanked her for her compliment and took a sip
of his own drink.
A siren could be heard in the distance as he contemplated her
next question. How far could his powers go? He hadn't discovered
that limit! The weakness in his abilities wasn't in the effects
they could have, but rather, what it took in order to activate
them.
"It goes as far as I need it to."
His voice would sound distorted, and have a strange echo. When
Sunset blinked, she would open her eyes to a completely
different scene. There would now be three of Zoran sitting at
the table with her. When she blinked again, she would be sitting
with a copy of herself.
"My ability is only limited by my imagination." The Sunset
clone spoke with Zoran's voice before forming into him once
more; This time without a shirt, and revealing every inch of
muscle and all of his tattoos.
"But I'm far more interested in yours though." He said, taking a
more casual tone. "You were practicing, right? How does your
ability work? What can -you- do?"
He looked at her expectantly. After all, he had joined her at
her table out of curiosity! He couldn't just spend the whole
time talking about himself!

"Woah, that's trippy," Sunset breathed as Zoran showed her more
examples of what his power could do. "I wonder if that's what
acid is like," she wondered aloud as she mentally drooled over
his tattoos and the flesh that lay under them. "Or maybe
ecstasy..." she added softly before shaking herself and blushing
a bit.
"Me? It's nowhere near as impressive and your walls are so thick
that I can't show off like you. I'm just a run-of-the-mill
empath." She shrugged. "And not a very good one at that," she
added under her breath and sighed.
Sunset looked around and took in the few other patrons on the
patio and the people walking by on the street. "Much of what I
do is just people watching. Body language, especially human body
language, is very easy to read. I just pay attention."
Her eyes flicked over Zoran again. He really was a delicious
speci-- no. She needed to focus. She filed away several mental
snapshots to fawn over later and looked at him closer. He was
beautiful, yes, but the set of his shoulders, the way he leaned
in towards her, the tilt of his lips, the slight crinkle in the
corner of his eye... he was enjoying playing with her, yes. But
he also seemed genuinely curious.
"What is it about me that has you so fascinated?" The question
was more to herself than him, and she found herself mirroring
his posture again. Something about him was equally magnetic to
her and it wasn't just his looks. Vaguely she found herself
wondering if he'd let her in to find out.
"I'm not usually very forward or forward at all really if I'm
being totally honest. But do you think you'd like to get coffee
again some time? Together, I mean. On me. Since I'm asking you."
She bit her lip and ducked her head. "No pressure though."
