       Verona, Italy.
Danielle was awakened by the prying sun, it’s light causing her
to pull the covers over her head, groaning into her pillows. She
tried to deny it but it lingered there, judgmentally. Her
husband had run to the market to grab some bits for breakfast.
Their villa was cozy, and as Danielle stretches and sits up, she
is met with the most breathtaking landscape. The sun is rising
over Verona, casting a light on all the tall buildings and green
trees. The bars on her balcony glistened as she finally gave in
and got up. First, a shower.
The woman often times woke up in hot flashes from the
nightmares. She hadn’t completely opened up about the attack,
despite the various therapy sessions. She didn’t need the
       medicine. Her husband was enough.
The cold water she splashes against her cheeks brings her back
from that train of thought, looking at her reflection in the
mirror, finding it hard to swallow the image in front of her. A
pale woman, with hollow dark eyes. Cheekbones so high, she
looked malnourished and tired. It was in the depth of her
       emerald gaze, her fatigue.
It doesn’t take a minute before she’s back in the bedroom,
crossing over to the balcony with her pack in one hand, and a
glass in the other. Alcohol, cigarettes, and weed was her coping
mechanism, it distracted her, took her away for a moment. It was
all she needed in a day, one moment. Where there is absolute
peace. Of the heart, of the mind. That’s why she started her
mornings with a shot. She takes a cigarette and places it
between her lips, lighting it up and inhaling. The smoke felt
like a friend, hugging her lungs, enjoying the taste of tobacco
       before exhaling.
Danielle sits on the balcony with her drink, and her cigarette
for ten minutes, self-contemplating. Waiting for Alesso to come
       back.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
The early light of dawn cast a long shadow along the cobblestone
streets of the city. Italy, entirely, always managed to catch
the man’s breath in his throat as he looked off into the silent
morning. Shadows retreated from every step as the sun banished
them back beneath the brick buildings, the black pooling beneath
the feet of passer-by as they meandered along the awakening
streets. The sleepy sun continued its accent and Alesso found
himself lost in the light reflected off the Adige River as he
crossed the Ponte Pietra back towards the apartment where his
       love awaited his return.
Alesso stopped in the middle of the bridge and looked out at the
long winding waters through the city center. He rested for a
moment, the bag of market goods strung over his shoulder as he
brought his left elbow to lean against the stone railing. Alesso
brought his head down and reset his aviator shades against the
brim of his nose as teeth flashed from behind his lips. “Never a
dull moment in the city.” He sighed as he leaned back up,
lingered a moment longer and then continued on his way.
Breakfast was waiting and soon the streets would crowd, the heat
would come, and breakfast would bake before he ever got home.
He continued along his way, his leather boots tapping a soft
beat against the road before him. Alesso, impeccable dressed as
always, drew attention throughout the city as he walked. Perfect
posture melded seamlessly with his measured steps. His tailored,
baby blue collared shirt remained seemingly motionless with
every step. The sleeves rolled to just above his elbows seemed
ironed flat with precision. And despite the rising temperature,
he remained true to his black slacks. Today he opted for black
suspenders instead of a belt. He turned the heads of locals. Men
and women alike, but his eyes never strayed from the path before
him. A left lead into a left and then to the right. Almost
       home.
Alesso let a frown creep over his face for a moment. Lonesome
walks made it easy for dark thoughts to creep into the mind. He
simply wondered if his market trip would be in vain. As of late,
Danielle ate less and less. Since Venice everything had
maintained a status quo, but he could feel the inching
differences taking place. Considering the circumstances, Alesso
had taken the liberty of filling the prescription the doctor had
written for his dearest. The pill bottle jangled with its
contents below breakfast. He hoped he could think of some way to
convince her to take them, but also debated with himself on the
best means he would bring up the topic. The Attack was fresh on
both their minds, still, some weeks after. His brow furrowed as
he imagined losing his beloved to the beast that ate at her.
They had opted for a two story villa within a neighborhood that
never seemed to sleep. The sound of people and children was
constant and each person within shouting distance. She had
insisted on such a place instead of an apartment or hotel. It
wasn’t the most expensive rental they had lived in, but it
certainly made the top five of his list. If it gave her piece of
mind, it was worth every Lira or Euro he spent. Alesso waved to
the neighbors and the children flooded him when he reached
within eyesight of them. He had gotten in the habit of handing
out candy, and this man was never one to disappoint, despite the
playful ire it drew from their parents.
“Signore, Signore. Hai caramelle oggi?” Alesso nodded “Si, Si.”
He reached into the bag and handed the eldest of the group three
bars of chocolate. “Ecco qui” The kids cheered in victory and
ran off to divvy their loot between the five of them. Alesso
nodded to the mothers as they shook their heads and laughed at
the bright faces that ran back towards them. “Signore Le’mont,
Sei troppo gentile” Alesso nodded and fished his keys from his
pocket. “Non menzionarlo.” He undid the locks to the door and
       stepped through the threshold.
Cold air met him. The one thing he appreciated more than the
fully furnished indoors was how well the house trapped the cold
inside of the first floor and hugged it tight enough to never
let it leave. He took in a breath five degrees cooler than
outside. He redid the locks and made his way into the kitchen.
He fished items for breakfast out of his bag and began the
morning ritual of preparing their first meal of the day. Alesso
called gently and his voice carried through the open atrium to
the second floor above the staircase. “Danielle, I have
returned. Ready for Breakfast?” And he busied himself with the
       cooking.

Danielle’s sense of security was completely dependent on her
husband. Ever since the attack, she never felt completely at
ease so despite the alcohol, and the drugs her leg still rocked
up and down, shaking with anticipation. She anticipated his
return, and before she snuffs out her cigarette she sees him
turn the road. Oh how handsome he was walking through the
streets and playing with the children. They reminded her of
their own, a sadness clutching her soul as she begins to
reminisce. The girls had built a life for themselves, but
Danielle missed having someone to take care of, someone of her
flesh, and of her blood who relied on her completely. For a
moment, she isolates the thought, letting it linger in her mind
and fill her heart with excitement before hopping out the door
       and rushing downstairs.
Her steps were small but quick as she enters the kitchen,
walking over to her husband so she could wrap her arms around
his midsection from where she stood behind him.
       “I missed you.”
She did. Even his scent filled the room, the furniture exposed
to his fragrance and lapping it up, it felt warm and inviting.
His strong arms made her feel like she was protected so when he
left she would panic a little. It alarmed her especially when he
would take longer than usual, perhaps because there’d be
traffic, or he’d stop to help someone out. Alesso was extremely
caring and when it came to the people he loved, he’d risk his
own life in a heartbeat for them.
She lets him go after a while to empty the contents of the brown
bags, and proceeded to put all the groceries away. Her eyes roam
       over the food in the fridge before closing it with a sigh;
nothing seemed appetising. She gets to the last item, wrapped in
a separate bag and buried under everything else. Her forehead
creases when she unwraps it and finds the pills, staring at her
husband as her blood boils in her chest.
Deciding it best to keep quiet she lets him cook, and hops onto
the counter, staring out into space and eventually getting lost
       in her own thoughts. Her mind wandered to the children outside;
the look on their faces when Alesso had given them the chocolate
was priceless. She missed being a carefree child, full of
innocence like them, with no worries in the world. The busy
street was ideal for her; even when Alesso wasn’t at home, she
was never alone really. The neighbours woke at the crack of
dawn, sending their children off to school. In the afternoon,
the kids would fill the streets with their laughter. Danielle
enjoyed the noise because it helped block the noises in her head
out. Without even thinking she reaches for a pack and pulls her
second cigarette of the day out, lighting it as Alesso continues
preparing breakfast, though this time she was smoking to release
the stress that manifested into a knot in her throat.
       “What’re you making?”
She tilts her head slightly when she looks in his direction,
blowing the smoke into the air and watching herself get
swallowed by the grey clouds; the change in her attitude was
blatant. Danielle was a woman who possessed a sexual charm
effortlessly. Her hair was always in a messy wave but it framed
her high cheekbones and hollow eyes perfectly; eyes that changed
colour under different lights. Her petite body clothed her black
satin robe, that had splits running down the sides. When she
lifts her leg onto the counter, without meaning to, she bares
her thigh, exposing herself entirely as it was the only piece of
clothing she wore at home. Why did her husband buy her pills?
She hadn’t even gotten a chance to read the label, having
stuffed it into her pocket as quick as she had taken it out.

Alesso grinned as she snuck in behind him. His arms wrapped over
hers and laced their fingers together as he turned his head over
his left shoulder and looked at her. “I missed you, too, my
love.” He released her hands as her arm fell away from his body
and she moved to take care of the rest of the groceries for the
day. An internal sigh went through his head as he heard the soft
crumple of the plastic bag and the sudden stop of the brown
paper bag rustling. His wife was sick, not stupid. And he should
have placed the groceries away before she ever made it down the
stairs. But she said nothing, so they postponed the real match
       until a later hour.
He looked back to her and grinned as she hopped onto the island
counter behind him, shaking his head as the second view gave him
all he needed on the current state of dress his wife was in.
Alesso wiped the spatula with a cloth and went about mixing in
the center of an omelet. The smell of the smoke mixed with the
smell of the food and he shook his head. A few minutes to cook.
Alesso turned and stared directly into the eyes of his wife. He
approached her slowly and placed his hand on her knee. “Veggie
ommmeeeelllleeeettttttttsss” As he extended out the second word,
his hand slipped from knee, to inner thigh, under the robe
itself and to the womanhood that waited beneath. His nose and
forehead touched hers and he just watched her for a moment. His
free hand came up and snatched the lit cigarette from her lips
and put it out on the counter. He pressed the remaining length
of the cigarette down until it smooshed and folded several
times. “You’re going to ruin your breakfast with that. And I
expect you to eat with me, dearest.”
He pulled back slightly, licked the tip of her nose and smiled
before slipping his hand out from the robe and returning to
flipping the nearly finished food. “It will only be a few
minutes more, My love.” He gave the heat a little more time to
do its work, sprinkled some seasoning and parsley on the top and
slid the first pan’s Omlete onto the plate. Then followed the
process with the second. “Where would you like to eat today?”

If Danielle had come to know anything about Alesso over the
years is that if a confrontation had the possibility to be
postponed, he wouldn’t dispute it. Of course, now, it was no
different, but the pills had caused her heart to tighten with
emotion; anger, mostly. She watches his back as he continues to
cook before he stops to walk over to her, teasing her. And
though her mind wasn’t there entirely, she did bury her anger
beneath the other emotions he so easily drew from her. The
first, is a taste of lust as he toyed with her warmth for but a
second, quickly dissipating as he takes the unfinished cigarette
to put it out on the countertop. He disapproved of the habit she
had picked up, but it didn’t stop her from smoking around him.
Perhaps it was the smell that got to him, but the kitchen was
filled with a different smell now, and it made her stomach
grumble. She hadn’t eaten properly for the last two days and it
       was becoming visible.
       “Balcone.”
Knowing he would take everything upstairs before she would even
get the word out, she grabs her favourite drink from fridge,
filling a cup with the succulent red juice; cold cranberry,
topping it with two ice cubes, before filling his cup with
orange bits. With that dne, she picks up both glasses and
follows him up the stairs and onto the balcony. Placing the
glasses down, she simply stands and looks out at the city - and
what a breathtaking city it was. It was the commotion that made
it so beautiful, there was never a dull moment on the streets of
Verona. And the sun. The sun kisses her olive skin, having
developed a natural tan over the years, one that was permanent
now. After a while, she takes a seat, and looks over at the man,
smiling softly as she picks up the fork and knife beside her
       plate.
       “Buon appetito.”
Though the woman could only manage a few bites, she takes her
time cutting up the omelet into small pieces so it made it more
manageable. It helped her digest it better and to be frank,
there was no rush. They didn’t have any errands to run today, so
they let the sun and the laughter of their neighbours be their
       company for breakfast.

A smile crept back onto his face as he knew her answer. Alesso
scooped the plates and utensils into his hands and began his
stroll out of the kitchen. Alesso walked up the stairs just as
the first syllable passed through her lips. He cruised up the
flight, through the bedroom, and out onto the balcony with
little problem of the environment. He set her plate down in
front of her favorite chair and then his to her left. He placed
the utensils on napkins and took his seat, waiting for his
beloved to join him once more.
He sat still, his arm hung over the railing as she arrived with
their drinks. The only noise now was the warm breeze that passed
over the open air balcony and the muffled sound of kids now
playing inside the home next door. Never a dull moment.
His eyes followed her to her seat. Alesso watched as she spoke
short, simple words and kept watching as she began to cut up her
meal into small bits and eat. The corner of his lips sunk down
as he twisted himself to look out over into the wide world
before them. Finally, after she had eaten much of her food he,
       he sighed and spoke.
“I filled the prescription the doctor gave you back in Venice.”
He turned his eyes towards her and nodded toward her pocket. “I
know you found them. And the quiet morning tells me you’re
angry.” He brought his elbows to either side of his plate. He
folded his fingers together and let his forearms and formed fist
rest on the table before him. “My Love, You can’t tell me there
is nothing wrong. They’re meant to help you with what happened
and you need to take them.”
He leaned back and picked up his drink. He brought the glass to
his lips and took a small sip before setting it back down.
Alesso watched for his wife’s reaction to such a statement. He
didn’t expect it to go his way, but it needed to be done. Alesso
relaxed back into the hard metal chair. Never before had the
colder iron felt like bars he was backed into instead of a
       comfort. He shifted himself once.

The cold air was pleasant against her now heated skin, taking a
seat and staring at her husband, not letting her eyes waver even
for a second. Danielle was angry, but she was also disappointed,
and it wasn’t in her husband, but in herself. The attack had
taken a toll on her, but she didn’t expect it to come back with
a wave of trauma from her past, which it did, but to top it all
off, she couldn’t control herself when the memories did come and
go, she lost control of all her emotions, and not being in
control was such a foreign concept to her that it threw her off
completely. Not to mention, she hated being dependent on
medication, pills just made everything real, it cemented the
fact that she wasn’t okay, and she wasn’t ready to come face to
       face with that reality yet.
Her gaze flickered to the streets, and it dawned on her how
upsetting it was that they were shrouded in such beauty but all
she wanted to do was sleep, she didn’t want to go out and
explore the beautiful city they had come to adore, most of their
mornings were spent on the balcony and most of their afternoons
in the bedroom. Well, her afternoons anyway. Alesso went out now
and again, even tried persuading her to do the same, but most
times she was too tired to move. The idea of having to walk
around seemed like too much of a heavy task.
Turning her gaze back to her husband, she furrows her brows and
       frowns.
“And you didn’t think to tell me first?!”
Alesso getting the medication she needed was a good thing,
admittedly, but the fact he kept it a secret from her hurt. It
made her question everything, which she wouldn’t usually do but
given the circumstances, it seemed like the best thing to do.
Though she was angry, and the emotion bubbled in her stomach,
she couldn’t help the ring of warmth around her orbs when she
looked at the man, knowing full well he would take advantage of
       that like he always did.
