       The city of canals
By: ShogoBoom Date: November 13, 2016, 5:42 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
There was a longing in her soul. A longing to be as vital as the
setting sun and as she stared out into the coral horizon, her
heart contracts, fingers tightening around the metal railings
surrounding the edge of the balcony.
       Venice.
It wasn’t the concrete jungle she imagined it to be and though
their apartment wasn’t particularly lavish, it was inviting, and
warm, but most importantly, safe. Her husband had left a while
ago to run some errands and Danielle found that often times when
he did leave, this is what she would do in his absence. Gaze at
the sky, and wait, for his return. As a soft breeze passes by,
she tightens the blanket around her body, letting a soft sigh
part her lips, unable to shake this inept fear in her stomach, a
feeling she had been dealing with for the most part of the day.
Of course, she hadn’t mentioned it to Alesso, it was probably
nothing anyway and she didn’t want to worry him.
When the doorbell does finally ring, she sinks her teeth into
her bottom lip, biting for just a second before running past
their bedroom excitedly. She nearly trips over the chaise in the
living room but manages to catch herself just in time, flinging
the door open instead of asking who it was like she usually
       would do.
As her eyes settle on a man, quite large, with broad shoulders,
       her forehead creased in confusion.
       He wasn’t Alesso.
       “Yes?”
Nothing, he stayed absolutely silent while his eyes seemed to
scan the house, and beginning to feel even more anxious about
the whole ordeal, Danielle pushes the door closed slightly until
she was the only thing in view, forcing him to stop
investigating. When he does finally look back at her, the hairs
at the nape of her neck stand, a shiver coursing through her
spine. He was unsettling. From his ill-lit eyes to his clothes,
even his knuckles, covered in purple bruises.
       “Signore?”
Before she could even process what was going on, he slams open
the door, flinging her back in the process, and because she was
caught so off guard, she is unable to move for a while but when
it does finally hit her, she makes a run towards the bedroom.
Her little strides are no match with his however and soon
enough, he grabs her by the air, muffling her screams with his
       hand over her mouth.
She tries punching and kicking but Danielle was small, and he
was built like a machine; strong and sturdy. She whimpers
helplessly, her hands beginning to shake out of fear, out of
       complete and utter panic.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Business had concluded for the day and Alesso was on his long
walk home through the streets of Venice Italy. The massive
structures resting on nothing more than bracers above the water.
Liquid lapping stone, as peaceful as the streets around him as
somewhere I the distance church bells tolled the hour. Seven
rings resounding off stone, reverberating in what seemed an
endless cycle through the streets and canals. Alesso crossed
over the water at a bridge just in time to hear the gondola
pilot humming to himself as he moved towards the nearby dock to
       make port for the night.
Alesso beat his own tune against the rough cobblestone road.
Each step thumping as boot met road one after the other. His
hair swayed in the warm breeze as he held on to a single flower
in one hand and a small box of Italian chocolates in his other.
It had been a longer day than he had expected and he knew
Danielle may be cross with him for returning so late. A promise
of four and dinner had turned into a cancelation and the promise
of making it up to her tonight. Tomorrow there was nothing but
the flight home to their estate.
The city was beautiful. Though they never had a true chance to
visit. But he missed the budding flowers of the estate and the
warm days here caused Alesso some discomfort.
Alesso loosened his tie as he crossed the street in front of a
passing car and unbuttoned the neck button to allow himself some
breathing room. He was a block away from their apartment complex
where they had called home for the last few days when it struck
him like a bolt to the stomach. Something wasn’t right. He
picked up speed, nearly jogging as he made it to the last corner
and rounded himself into the small walkway, barely big enough to
fit two abreast, and rushed for the door itself.
He hustled himself up the stairs. He cleared two at a time,
sometimes three, as he released his stride and brought himself
to their third story apartment. Second door on the right. And as
he planted both feet on the landing he could already see the
       door was not closed.
He took his time, easing his way towards the frame before
turning in on the scene before him. A man with his arms around
his wife, her helpless form nearly collapsed in the man’s arms.
Alesso stared on and locked eyes with the man, raising his own
slighter as he did his best not to bear his teeth. “Just let her
go, and walk out. You don’t want to do this.” He spoke in
Italian first and then in English, just to make sure he
translated. He inched himself closer towards where they were,
leaving a partial line to the door, remaining close enough to
nab him if he tried to dash with Danielle.

Her heart pounded in her chest as the man’s grip tightened and
he continued to muffle her screams, her throat sore from trying
despite how useless it was - the neighbours wouldn’t even be
able to hear because of how thick the walls were and only god
knew where Alesso was, certainly not here. Tears began to pool
up in her eyes, a couple sliding down her cheek and as the large
man felt the liquid on his hands, he began to slide his thumb
along her cupid's bow, almost mocking her.
Alesso was silent, and if they weren’t already facing the door
she would’ve been oblivious to his presence altogether, but her
eyes widened as she looked at him, wide and frightened, though
now she wasn’t scared for her own life, but his. The thought of
anything happening to this man turned her stomach upside down
and blocked her throat, unable to even entertain the idea -
though he was soft, and tender to her, he had also vowed to
protect her, and Italians didn’t take their vows lightly, as she
had come to find out over the years. She would joke about how
serious he was sometimes but his resolve seemed to unsettle the
man behind her, his grip loosening slightly. Taking the
opportunity, she bites down into his flesh, causing him to let
go but it proves futile as he grabs her by the waist once more,
his own nails digging into her skin, as payback.
       She had angered him.
       “Leave, my heart.”
Danielle’s voice was soft, as she gazed at him with nothing but
love in her eyes, the woman was extremely overprotective when it
came to her husband. Simply put, she would kill for the man.
       “What do you want?”
Her next question was aimed at the man behind her, his nostrils
flared now as he looked at Alesso, his gaze unwavering. Her
complexion was clear and pale, dark circles surrounding her
eyes, and her brows were well-defined, expressive. She narrowed
her eyes at her husband, and though she didn’t speak, so many
words, words that only he would understand, were exchanged in
       that one look.
It was a look she would often serve him when he angered her.
Right now, she needed him to listen, and not be so hardheaded.
She needed him to be safe, and rational.

Alesso remained resolved, inching himself closer and closer
until a mere five feet rested between him and his principle
target. He kept his head level, the redness in his flesh
brightening giving testament to the boiling blood underneath the
skin. As Danielle bit down and the man grunted in pain, Alesso
took a stutter step forward as he closed the gap another foot
and watched the man regain his grip on the woman. He ignored her
pleas for him to leave, his eyes catching her for a brief moment
before flicking back to lock with the culprit’s.
She was giving him that look. He could feel it tingle his flesh
and raise goosebumps on his arms as he dared not look directly
into that bright, red gaze she struck him with. He’d much rather
stare into the noon-day sun. It was the look that told him
you’re are obviously being a bullheaded ass. And he was. But he
       would not let her alone.
“Just let her go. Leave. I won’t even call the police. What? You
need money?” Alesso lowered himself towards the floor, keeping
his hands visible at all times as he set the flower on the floor
and reached into his back pocket. His movements remained as slow
as he could go. His eyes flashed red as he brought his hands
around and offered the wallet to the man, in its whole. “I have
enough here for you to do whatever the hell you want. Run, get
out the country, I don’t care. Just let my wife go, take it, and
       there is the door.”
For a minute he was believable. His body language playing
perfect into his ploy. The man reached for the wallet, allowing
Alesso to inch closer and closer, until he was in range. When
the man almost had the wallet Alesso dropped it.
The wallet dropped between them and Alesso seized the man by the
wrist and from his better position, ripped the man forward. The
assailant was just off his balance enough that he came forward.
Alesso turned and threw his weight into a devastating elbow
across the man’s jaw which sent both of them careening for the
floor. Alesso put himself between the man and his wife as they
       tumbled to the floor.
He managed to get Danielle free, giving her a boost away before
turning around just in time to catch a counter attack to the
left brow. Alesso was rocked, his body turning with the blow and
his body nearly falling as Alesso returned again with his own
punch and soon enough the two men where tumbling over the floor,
trading blows with one another like two teenagers in the street.

Danielle continued to eye her husband as he completely ignored
her, and she knew why. He always crumbled under that look - it
was his one weakness, and in a moment like this, it served him
right to avoid her. Now, she watched with frightened eyes as he
practically knelt on the ground, her brows furrowed in
confusion. A few muffled disputes from her was enough to cut the
tension so thick in the room, it couldn’t be sliced with a knife
and as the man fell for Alesso’s trick and played right into his
hand, she found herself being pushed away, to be kept from
       interfering.
Her eyes widen in surprise as her husband and this stranger went
at it, watching them exchange punches, rolling around the floor,
       scuffing each other up.
As her heart continued to race in her chest, her breathing gets
heavier and her shaking only gets worse with time as the
situation plummets but she looks around the room frantically,
trying to find something to help her husband. She runs for the
telephone, dialling the number for police, and quickly giving
       them the address.
Once she slams the telephone down, she grabs a glass vase,
watching as the man and her husband continue fighting, waiting
for this huge bulk of a human to roll on top before smashing the
glass on the back of his head, hoping and praying to dear god it
would cause some damage or at least distract him enough for her
       husband to have the advantage.
She didn’t know what to do, what to say even as blood poured
from the man’s head but it seemed to have had close to no
effect, and it was probably because, in the heat of the moment,
he couldn’t physically feel the pain settle in.
       No matter.
He would have it coming later.
       “I’ve called the police!”
Once the man realises the odds weren’t in his favour and that
fighting wouldn’t resolve anything, he gets up and bolts out of
the door. Danielle rushes over to her husband, bruised and
bloody, and sits beside him, her face stricken with grief. Her
fingers delicately trace some dried blood on the side of his
lip, wincing as she did so, and though she wasn’t the one
physically hurt, she was emotionally wounded; why didn’t you
listen to me, stupid? Her eyes spoke words that her voice
couldn’t muster as a tear slides down her cheek, bottom lip
quivering when her mind begins to comprehend everything that had
happened in the past thirty minutes.
“You’re so stupid,” she whispers, “so, so stupid.”
But he wasn’t, and she loved him for it, more than words could
       articulate.

fatiguing much faster than his wall of a beast, but he kept
himself going. When the man finally got the upper hand Alesso
was the first to notice his wife coming over head and he closed
his eyes and turned his face just in time to avoid being sprayed
       in the eyes with glass.
Alesso turned back, blocking his attacker from grabbing on his
throat as he tried to remove the man from on top of him once
more. This time, Alesso was more worn out than he had realized.
But the quick thinking of his wife to get to the phone and dial
for help saved Alesso before his strength finally gave out. The
man dashed from the apartment and Alesso laid on the ground, an
arm wrapped around his stomach as he chuckled to himself. He
almost found it in himself to laugh, but he kept it tied back
because it hurt even to giggle as he was.
He looked up at Danielle as she finally made her way over to
him. His smug eyes staring into her damp ones as she smirked
against her ‘I’m going to kill you myself’ gaze. He braced
himself on his own arm and then moved so that he leaned into her
lap. The sirens where already coming down the street as he
reached up and stroked away the tear from her face.
“I don’t know… I think I might agree with you.” He winced as he
let out a small laugh and laid there. The police would arrive
soon enough to take statements. “I hope you remember your…
sssss… Italian, my dear. You might be talking.” He wrapped his
arm tighter around his stomach and smirked at her.

Long before they had come to Italy, Danielle had envisioned what
life here would be like; all roses, and twinkling lights. The
long canals worked its way around the city like a lover
retracing steps and though it was beautiful, she would’ve never
thought she’d end up in this situation; sat on the floor, with a
bruised and bloodied husband in her lap, barely able to laugh.
The rose on the floor brings a smile to her lips and as her
husband wipes a stray tear from her cheek, she presses her lips
to his finger, kissing it softly.
       “Where did you go?”
It was a pitiful and weak attempt to distract him from the pain,
but if she hadn’t been so impulsive they wouldn’t even be in
this mess. The sirens only continue to get louder, but before
she knows it the irritating sound dies out.
In her head, she counts the steps that lead up to their little
apartment complex. Two officers rushed through the door,
scanning the room briefly before walking over, concern sketched
all over their faces. The larger one of the two had a thin nose
and a head that seemed too heavy for his shoulders. He takes out
his pen and notebook, beginning to ask questions while the other
reached into his pocket to grab his phone. He begins dialing for
the ambulance but Danielle stops him from actually calling.
“No, no need, I’ll take care of him,” she spoke broken Italian,
but her accent was like a compass, always leading her home, and
always holding her back from fitting in completely. They took
the description of the man, and after a while, let themselves
       out.
“Come, my love,” though she hated herself for disturbing him,
she needed to clean up his cuts before they got infected, “we
need to get you cleaned up.”

He chuckled weakly to himself and looked at her. With a shake of
his head he dropped himself into her lap and let out a deep
sigh. His eyes stared off into the ceiling as he smirked. “I was
at the meeting. It ran late and stopped to get you the flower
and the…” Alesso looked around the room for a moment and then he
stretched his arms above his head for a second. “Chocolates…
Which apparently are gone now. I’m sure they didn’t go too far.”
The sirens stopped and He could hear the footsteps coming from
outside as the police finally made to the apartment and came
rushing in. Alesso laughed quietly to himself as he pushed off
his wife and managed to struggle himself to his feet. He braced
himself against the couch that had been moved. They stared at
him for a moment and then began to ask their questions.
Alesso answered the questions as they were thrown his way,
giving an avid description of the man who had attacked his wife
and ended up fighting with He saw the questioning looks the two
officers gave his wife as she told them not to call the
ambulance and chuckled to ease the tension. “We’ll have our own
doctor check me out, officers, No need to fret. I’ve been beat
up worse.” His Italian seemed to put them more at ease. They
took one more look to his wife and then back to Alesso, who
nodded. “Thank you for coming. Please, be careful out there.”
The Police tipped their hats and let Alesso and Danielle that
they would let them know if anything turned up. Alesso nodded
and walked them out himself, closing door as they left before
turning back to Danielle with a smirk.
I’ll be alright. Don’t fret over cleaning them too soon.” He
brought the back of his hand to his forehead and wiped a trickle
of blood he felt sliding down his face with a chuckle. “Well.
Haven’t been in a scrap like that since that one time at the
Club.” He laughed lightly, the boisterousness tricking instantly
into a snicker as he wrapped an arm around his stomach again.
“Now that was a scrap, remember?” He shook his head and walked
over, moving the couch back into place before plopping down on
       it with a wince.

Her eyes scan the room as he mentions the chocolate, sighing
softly when she couldn’t find it, though in her visibly stressed
state that was bound to be the case. So much had happened in the
span of 30 minutes that not only was she physically exhausted
but emotionally drained too. She watched, fear and worry etched
over her features, as Alesso wiped the blood trickling down his
       forehead.
       “No, look, it can’t wait.”
That’s what Danielle was like, overly anxious about everything,
though sometimes she feared it would scare her husband away.
Clearing her mind of such depressing thoughts, she makes her way
quickly to their bathroom to grab the first aid box and before
long, she was back at his side, sitting on the coffee table, and
emptying the contents of the box in her lap.
“I do remember,” her voice is soft, as she soaks some cotton in
an antibacterial solution, to then slowly wipe at any bruises
visible to her - it was strange, how fast her husband healed
sometimes but she remembered the night he talked about like it
was yesterday. He had always been so overprotective, and the
woman cherished that so much about him, she felt, that she
didn’t tell him enough how appreciative she was.
As she finishes tending to his cuts and bruises, she looks down
at him, a look of worry still clouding her gaze before cupping
his cheek gently, being careful not to cause him any unnecessary
discomfort. There were no words she could find to fill the space
between them, so she just continued to look down at him,
nibbling on her bottom lip nervously.

He sighed, his shoulders slouching down as he tilted his head
towards his wife. His head shook from side to side as he
chuckled and watched her retrieve the first aid kit. The wounds
had already started closing and Alesso could feel the repairing
of his flesh as tendrils of flesh pushed towards one another and
gripped closed the deeper wounds. The blood had stopped
trickling before Danielle returned with the first aid kit.
He watched her wipe the blood away and tend to his bruises and
before long finish up cleaning him up.
He laughed at her as she spoke to him and straightened himself
up as she rested her digits against his face. He leaned into her
palm and set his nose against her finger as he gazed at her. He
caught the shade in her eye and his own look softened as he
placed his hands against her lap before he leaned in and planted
a soft kiss on her lips. “You worry too much.” He said in
       Italian.
“But I guess that’s what keeps us together so well.” He laughed.
He took her hand and pulled her over from the coffee table to
sit next to him. His body leaned into hers and he watched the
wall in front of them, losing himself in thought a moment as he
fixated on one spot in front of him.
