It was boarding time. Otherwise known as: the worse part of a
cruise. People swarmed onto the deck as the ship's horn signaled
the last few minutes before it was time to go. The boat was
moored to the pier along the Gulf Coast, facing West. It was the
most extravagant among the quays area. Despite its splendour,
the boat was a bit gaudy, in her opinion. Zorah preferred the
appeal of simple sail boats with large, triangle sails against
the horizon. A drawback to their simplicity, was the lack of hot
tubs, buffets, and Spa that the cruise ship promised.
Gathering her luggage, she navigated through the crowd and found
the line leading to the ramp attached to the ship. The luggage
she carried with her was relatively small in comparison to those
around her, but it was far from light. Clumsily, she shuffled
forward with the line, finding herself in front of the ticket
agent.
"Ticket?" he asked through an obviously fake smile.
She flashed him her pass and badge. He scanned the documents and
then jotted something down on his clipboard before nodding her
on. After seeing that she was staff, he lost his overly polite
attitude along with the forced smile.
Boarding the ship, Zorah looked around at all of the faces
knowing that she would not have much time to mingle. Even though
she was hired under part-time conditions as an assistant to the
head nurse, she had a feeling her friend had not been completely
truthful about the job when she asked to cover for her.
She sighed, granting the sun one last longing look, before
heading down to the middle level of the ship where staff was
housed. The corridors were narrow and dimly lit by luminescent
lighting. She was not that tall, but the low ceiling was still
short, even to her. Once in her room, she unpacked and changed.
She had just about finished when the captain of the ship came
over the intercom to ask all staff members to go to the deck for
a mandatory meeting. A groan wrestled its way through her lips
as she quickly brushed her hair and then left the room.

How long had it been since Calia had been on a vacation? It must
have been three years since she had seen the ocean, and she had
-never- been on a cruise! She was practically glowing with
excitement by the time the ship took off. The first day was all
about relaxing. Calia explored the ship, but spent most of the
day in bed, catching up on much needed rest. The second day
though, was when she intended to start having fun.
After an early morning workout and a shower (complete with
bathroom selfies), She got up for breakfast. The ship had a
glorious 24 hour buffet! Calia had always heard that the best
thing about cruises was the food, but she found it hard to
believe. Now she was beginning to think it might be true. After
gathering a stack of pancakes and a bowl of mixed fruit, she sat
near a window overlooking the pool area. She wore a simple white
shirt and jeans over her swimsuit. The pool was definitely up
there on her list of places to spend time that day. She watched
as people slowly started to reveal themselves. Looked like it
was time for things to get kicked up! As she was finishing her
breakfast, the music started on the pool deck, and a few kids
were out playing in the pool designated for those under 18.
After finishing her breakfast, Calia headed out to the pool deck
as well. She didn't head straight for the water though, instead
taking the time to wander the entire deck. The center of the
ship was home to two pools and four hot tubs. But the areas
closer to the front and rear of the ship had other activities.
At the head was a rock climbing wall that looked like a lot of
fun! And to the rear, a group of thirty-somethings were playing
shuffleboard, which made Calia laugh because she saw that as a
game for a much older crowd.
She was just getting ready to make her way to the water, when
the group of kids came crashing around the corner, still
dripping water from the pool. Calia quickly slid against the
wall to avoid making contact with any of them. They were laughing
and chasing each other, having a good time, but they clearly
didn't realize they were being a hindrance to others. The
smallest girl, who seemed to be the "it" in this game, bumped
into an unsuspecting man. Her small frame wasn't enough to knock
him over, but in conjunction with the water left behind by the
bigger kids, he slid to the ground, taking out two of his
friends with him in an ugly crash!
The kids, realizing the trouble they could get into, quickly
bolted, screaming "Sorry!" as they disappeared from the pool
deck. But they had no idea the damage they had caused. The man
who had gotten knocked down didn't seem to have any major
injuries, but the slightly older woman in the middle of the
crash (who was likely the object of the two men's attention,)
was crying out in pain, and the third man seemed to have been
injured as well.
Calia called to a nearby attendant. "Call a medic please!" She
said, before going to tend to the woman. Though she was on
vacation, Calia was a Trauma nurse back home, and knew well how
to tend to injured persons. "Don't worry. I'm a nurse." She
said. Those words seemed to calm the lady, who was desperately
holding onto her left arm. Keep calm and take deep breaths. I'm
going to take a look, ok? After examining the woman, she was
convinced that she had probably broken, or at least fractured
her forearm.
Looking around, there wasn't much available to make a splint
with. Thinking quickly she grabbed a few newspapers from the
nearby painting area and rolled them up. She placed them on
either side of the woman's arm, and removed her shirt, tearing
it in two in order to provide the cloth to lock the splint in
place. "We're going to get you to the medical center to get it
looked at properly, ok?" The woman nodded her head, but Calia
didn't move her just yet. "Are you hurt anywhere else?" She
still hadn't gotten around to checking the other man's injuries.
She hoped help arrived soon...

The second day was much like the first: boring. She could not
join in on activites like she had thought she would be able to.
Instead, she had to man the nurse station. Hours into her shift,
she had defeated five levels of candy crush, purchased a new
outfit along with a light-up showerhead that she was immediately
regretted buying, and had manages to somehow consume two bags of
mnms. It was a sign that she needed to find something productive
to do soon before her waistline and bank account were both
destroyed.
Fruit Ninja. That counted as productive, right?
Halfway through downloading the new game, her radio went off.
There had been some sort of accident down by the pool. She
grabbed her bag and hurriedly went down to investigate. Finally,
some action!
A group was gathered around the wounded. In her days as a
paramedic, she dreaded being called out to street emergencies.
People loved drama. Many would try to capture it on their phones
to upload it to the internet. She had always wondered what they
would think of others posting videos of their loved ones at
their weakest points, or sometimes, even dying. But she was not
there to pass judgment. She was there to help.
With one look of the scene, it was easy to see that somehow
three had fallen. A woman was busy helping one, so she went to
the other two. There were no visible injuries significant enough
to cause for alarm, but she hated to assume. However, there was
no CT machine on the ship to test for concussions.
"If either of you feel dizzy, sick to your stomach, or develops
headaches or experience a nosebleed, let me or any of our
nursing staff know immediately," she instructed.
Once the two had nodded and agreed, she left them and went to
the worse of the three. She gave the woman who had helped her a
quick glance before diving in and checking out the extent of her
injuries. The makeshift stent was impressive! It was clear the
woman had some experience in the medical field.
"We need to get you back for x-rays," murmured a thoughtful
Zorah as she carefully caressed the woman's injured arm. "Can
you help me get her up to the nursing station?"
Zorah's green eyes glances up to the woman helping out. The
woman could be related to the elderly woman, though the
resemblence was not there to solidify the thought. Not that at
mattered. Relative or not, the woman was there to help.
As she maneuvered the injured woman, the woman let out a pained
guttural sound, but it did not deter her.
"Do you have any family aboard?" asked Zorah.
In all reality, there was no need for her to know this, but she
hoped it would get the woman's mind off the pain as they
carefully moved to the station.
"Y-yes, my husband," replied the woman, looking around in a
futile attempt to spot him.
"Hey, move!" Zorah commanded as people from the crowd closed in
around them in order to try to break away from the dissipating
chaos.
The crowd slowly moved out of the way, but not before some of
them threw dirty glances her way. She ignored them, focused only
on getting the woman to an x-ray.
"We will find him," assured Zorah, her voice warm and
comforting.
Once in the nurse's station she took a quick x-ray of the
woman's arm and contacted her husband for her. The woman did
have a slight break so she put an actual stent on her, but
otherwise she was fine. After one last look over, the woman was
escorted back to her room by her husband.
There was only one last question on her mind: who was the woman
who had helped her?

Calia heard the nurse arrive before she saw her. She went to
check on the other two involved in the incident first, taking
the weight of inspecting them off of Calia's shoulders. When she
finally arrived at the side of the lady, Calia was taken aback.
She was hot! She was the nurse that men fantasized about giving
them spongebaths, in a skimpy white miniskirt! Calia wasn't into
women, but if she ever decided to give one a try, she hoped they
were as sexy as this nurse!
Calia was so lost in her thoughts that she almost missed the
nurse's request. After staring for a few seconds too, long, she
shook her head vigorously. "Oh! Of course!" She said, helping
the woman to her feet, and preparing to follow the nurse down to
the nursing station.
The nurse was a bit aggressive with the passengers. But Calia
understood. They were like vultures, drawn to a weak and
vulnerable old woman! They deserved much worse than they got!
Calia could only hope the unnamed nurse wouldn't face
disciplinary action for her harshness with the passengers later.
They didn't find the woman's husband immediately. Damn men were
never where they were supposed to be... But it would be easy to
contact him once they had his name. Once they arrived in the
nurse's office and she began the X-Ray, there was really no
reason for Calia to stick around. She was fine being up on the
pool deck in her bikini top, but now she felt incredibly
exposed. Even so, she stuck around, perhaps out of concern.
She couldn't help but laugh at herself though. Her first
vacation in almost three years and she -still- couldn't go two
whole days without finding herself in a nurse's office! She
pulled out her phone while the X-Ray was being performed to make
a quick tweet
Old habits die hard #NurseFirst #WorkingonVacation
#BeachBodyNurse
When she put her phone away, she looked around to see that there
were no other nurses present. They seemed mighty understaffed! I
mean, sure, they weren't in a hospital, but what could one nurse
have done alone if the accident had been much worse?
She took a look at the X-Rays, out of habit. She knew she was
intruding but she couldn't help herseld. "Looks like it's only a
slight fracture!" She said, most definitely out of turn. "Could
have been much worse!"
It didn't take long for her husband to arrive and explain that
he had been at the buffet. Of course! He was eating while two
men were hitting on his wife and she ended up with a broken arm!
But then, it wasn't fair to blame him. She very well could have
been the one that left him behind after all! She waved to them
both as they left. There was no doubt that they would be
reimbursed for their vacation. Calia couldn't help but wonder if
it was worth it.
She then turned back to the nurse, with an embarrassed
expression. "Sorry for kind of taking over." She said. "I'm a
trauma nurse back home, and I guess it's just hard to break the
habits."
