An abrupt challenge (Rai vs. Ken)
By: Eshu Date: February 12, 2016, 11:53 am

The arena will be primarily an open field, grassy and littered
with flowers. To the south, a lake at the base of a running
waterfall. Large stones rise from the surface of the water. To
       the Northeast, a vast forest.

Standing tall; nearly seven feet to be precise, and carrying two
large katanas at his hip, Mitsarugi Miyamoto waits patiently at
the center of the field. His one; the right, rests at the end of
his top katana, while his left hand plays absentmindedly with
the sheath to the second. His near white eyes scan the
surroundings as he whistles a silent tune to himself. The air is
still; calm for such an open plain, and all about him there
seems to drift an unearthly calm. As if the song he whispers
soothes the very essence of the world and quiets the beating of
       natures heart.
He was there; once more awaiting a challenge, because a foe from
the forgotten past had offered up a fair contest of skill, and
he was not one to hesitate. He would leave his all out on that
new battlefield, and he knew his opponent would do the same.

It had been months since Senrei's early graduation from the
Academy. Even so, he hadn't found a place to return to. He had
joined the Academy to gain the strength to protect his home.
However, by the time he made it back, it had been destroyed.
Since then He has been wandering in search of a new home, and
taking on challenges to keep his skills sharp. This time , he
had a feeling he had found a real challenge.
He carried no visible weapons, dressed in only white robes. His
tails swung back and forward, as his ears twitched, taking in
the sounds of his surroundings. Senrei wasn't the aggressive
type. But the understood the necessity for strength in this
world. that was why he fought. "Feel free to make the first
move." The teenage fox spirit said. He stood in a bed of
flowers, staring down the man who stood his opposite. He showed
no signs of excitement, or adrenaline. Actually, it was almost
like he was back in class! Just another exam...

Mitsarugi did not draw out his katana; nor did he charge in for
an attack, but instead he gently lowered his head to the
opponent before him, and paid homage to his bravery with a
silent bow. When he was once again righted; shifting to his
bushido stance with a tight grip on his sheathed top katana, he
began taking small steps forward and to the side. Circling and
watching as he drew closer to his opponent; paying attention to
his twitching ears, the flitting of tails behind him, and the
casual breathing pattern of a man at ease, Mitsarugi took his
       time and remained cautious.
He knew not what his foe was capable of; nor if his blade would
strike true in this land of mythical and magical beasts, but he
wouldnt allow himself to underestimate an enemy who stood so
calm and poised on the battlefield. Those were always the most
       deserving of caution...

The swordsman was a man of caution. This commanded the respect
of Senrei. He had grown accustomed to testing his abilities
against bullheaded and reckless opponents, however strong they
may have been. Senrei decided that he would make the first move
after all. He bent down and lifted a flower from the field,
twirling it between his clawed fingers as he deposited his
energy into it. While not particularly powerful, Senrei's
ability could be extremely dangerous. The ability to alter and
manipulate organic materials such as plants to his will, it made
any natural environment his weapon. With a flick of his wrist,
the flower extended into a bladed weapon about four feet in
length. It maintained it's green color, and purple floral
       pattern, but it's physical composition had completely changed;
       gaining the consistency of steel.
Senrei was not familiar with his opponent, or his fighting
style, so he would not attack carelessly. His fighting stance
was reminiscent of a fencer, blade pointed toward his opponent
to maintain a certain distance. His right side lead, as he
inched toward Mitsarugi, testing his reflexes with a simple poke
       to the chest.

His opponent's spacing was impeccable; Mitsarugi moving ever so
slightly to dodge the point of an organic weapon created moments
before, and yet he knew the battle to be just getting started.
First they would poke and prod; find weaknesses, work out a
strategy, defend and prepare. It was all a game after all. One
in which every action was another pawn being slipped from space
to space, and with the right step, the right poke, it could be
ended for one of them instantly.
As quick as his opponent had struck out at him; the aim to judge
reaction speed and distance obvious, Mitsarugi had grown
uncertain about whether to unsheathe his blade or not. He had
been long since forbidden from striking another directly with
the weapon, but to let it free and show a worthy adversary a
challenge: That would surely be acceptable to his master...
       Would it not?
Mitsarugi played out the length of his opponents newfound
weapon; edging in and out of its reach as he continued to
grapevine and walk a circle with the foe. A dance with much more
on the line than the possibility of stepping on someone's toe.
Here they would dance with weapons, clash with both heart and
steel, and test one another's mettle and worth as warriors... If
only Mitsarugi could figure out how to go about breaching his
       opponents increased range...

Senrei wasn't one who was familiar with different cultures and
customs. Due to this, he didn't see Mitsurugi's failure to draw
his weapon as a sign of disrespect. He instead found it rather
curious. It was likely that he was waiting on the Fox Sprite to
make a more dramatic move in order to take advantage of some
flaw. It was certainly a method Senrei had used many times back
       at the Academy.
Very well. He decided to step it up, ever so slightly. With a
quick and decisive motion, he lunged forward, still leading with
his right side, swinging the blade downward toward the enemy's
left shoulder, followed immediately by another jab to the chest.
Silver color eyes examined the man's reaction to his movements
carefully. He knew this was just the pregame. But so far, he had
given the enemy more information than he had gathered. As far as
he was concerned, he was already losing.

With a step to the right, a half twist at the waist, and a
literal silent draw, Mitsarugi dodged the first swing from his
opponent, and with a resounding clang of metal on metal, parried
the second jab at his chest. The sound of the impact would
resonate with Mitsarugi's blade; Aeon as it was called, and with
the grip on her ornate hilt held tight, the samurai would turn
and press his opponents attack upwards and to his right. Back up
and over the shoulder he started his own swing from. In doing
so, he would switch to face his foe head on, breach the security
of his adversary's reach, and without allowing his new
challenger to realize it, begin his own counterattack.
Aeon; the blade of songs, memorized the frequency with which his
opponent's blade resonated, and the next impact of steel on
steel would end quite differently for the odd eared warrior.
Mitsarugi stepped forward with a quick dash; making no sound as
he moved, no sound at all as he swung from his right: Where he
had led his opponents weapon just a moment prior, aiming to
slice a line across the foe's chest and exit from his right hip.
Whether it could strike true or would, was another story
altogether as he prepared mentally for yet another round of poke
       and dodge... For now...

Perhaps it had been a bit foolhardy to challenge a Samurai to a
swordfight. This was clear in the man's superior form. However,
Senrei had done it in the spirit of what they called
"Sportsmanship." And though swordsmanship wasn't his specialty,
he believed he could hold his own well enough to feel his
opponent out. He very well may have been wrong...
Mitsurugi swiftly guided Senrei's blade up, and over his
shoulder, creating a wide opening that Senrei couldn't hope to
counter fast enough. His only hope was a hasty retreat. When the
opponents blade came for his open chest, the only available move
to make was a quick jump backwards, narrowly escaping the tip of
the blade. "Your form is superior to mine." Senrei said. His
tone was very matter-of-factly, No sign of surprise, or
astonishment. It was like a casual observation. Senrei was
       certainly an odd one.
He picked up another flower from the ground, and through an
identical method of the first one, created a second blade. While
it's consistency was the same as the first, this one was a
single bladed weapon, which he held in his left hand. "I'm
afraid a second blade may not be enough to bridge that gap." He
said honestly. "But we will see."
His form changed at that point, He still lead with his dominant
right side, but his blade no longer pointed toward his opponent.
Such a skillful swordsmen clearly knew how to get inside such a
defense. This time, his lung would be accompanied by a digonal
strike from the blade in his right hand, while the one in the
left guarded his body. The strike would travel the distance from
his opponents. right hip, to his left shoulder. Obviously a
parry would leave his opponent open to a strike from the second
blade. A dodge was the more likely reaction. As the blade in his
left hand drove forward for a horizontal strike, the one in his
right would retreat to his body, both blades acting as
extensions of his own limbs. However, instead of a third strike
from the first blade, the fox would suddenly drive forward, his
left knee flying straight for his opponent's nose, in hopes of
       catching him off guard.

There was a moment before impact; that last beat of a heart
before the jump, and when his blade were about to strike true,
Mitsarugi would be foiled by his opponents hasty step back. The
       opponent was good enough to know when retreat was necessary;
capable enough to dodge such a blow without harm, and he was
polite in action and reaction. Truly, Mitsarugi had found an
adversary worth his own focus and time.
While his foe seemed to waste little time; creating a secondary
weapon for which to strive towards victory, Mitsarugi saw the
truth in each of his actions. His new challenger was no
swordsman or master tactician; nor could he be some master of
the martial arts. It was likely instead that he utilized a
       special trait, a form, a transformation, spell or power, that;
along with his ability to rapidly modify natural materials and
their composition, lent him his extraordinary confidence and
poise. Whatever the ability, Mitsarugi did not want to be caught
off guard by it... So as the man opposite of him began to strike
with his first weapon, the samurai took a great leap backwards
       and resheathed his first katana.
(Interrupt to end combat early... hope its acceptable as enough
distance placed between us would have augmented your attack
pattern entirely... I will not attack)
       Instead of placing his right hand back on the blade Aeon's hilt;
the top katana, this time Mitsarugi placed his fingers firmly
around the second of the two swords, and with a loud hissing of
air, slid the black steel weapon from its sheath. This weapon
screamed of sickness and pain; of some dark horror unwitnessed
by the eyes of men, and yet it was silent. Unnaturally silent in
fact... Lending Mitsarugi himself, a perverse aura of absolute
       stillness.
He held the blade before him unlike Aeon; changing his grip to a
two handed style, lifting the weapon overhead, lowering his
center of balance, and focusing intently on the foe now roughly
       twenty feet away.
