Without any luck. That was how she was going to get through her
       education.
The classroom buzzed with life as students flooded in and chose
their seats, readying for the lecture that was soon to come. The
scent of college text books, aftershave mixed with perfume, and
cedar rafters from along the frame of the ceiling, infiltrated
the atmosphere. As apprehensive as Thalia was, she was just as
excited to begin her studies. Unaware of her starting school,
Adonis was probably out doing his usual runs without any
inclination that his wife, a goddess of good fortune, was
sitting in a university surrounded by a sea of mortal faces
which belonged to people centuries younger than her. Her forever
frozen, youthful appearance blended well among the children
there. If anything, she appeared mid-twenties, if not younger.
Throughout her life, she had never considered an education, but
after Pandora came along and started her schooling, something
within Thalia had felt inadequate. Broken even. Here she was a
mother, but she could hardly read anything above seventh grade
level. She wanted to learn to better help Pandora when she came
home with homework. Several years ago while Pan was asleep, she
had snuck a book out of her bookbag to read. That was the start.
When Adonis had caught her studying from their daughter's
textbooks, he had been supportive. She played it off. It really
was not that big of a deal. Thalia felt more insecure about it
all than anything, which was why she was sitting in the very
back row where no one would feel inclined to first look.
Still, Thalia had tried to keep going back to school a secret.
Despite Adonis being supportive, she wanted to know she could do
this herself. If she failed, she would not have to tell him and
       face that kind of disappointment.
The tip of her eraser rapped against the rigid spine of her
notebook. Two women sat on either side of her. Both were too
busy talking to their friends to notice her. Suddenly, the girl
to her left laughed and threw back her elbow in her elation,
knocking over Thalia's coffee. The brown liquid drenched her
textbook before she could remove it from the table.
The girl apologized, while Thalia tried to clean up the mess.
       "No luck," she vowed, mentally.
They cleaned up the mess and placed her book on a table in the
corner to dry, just as the teacher walked in. Nearly every girl
released a giggle. The teacher was a young man with a pair of
sunglasses perched on the bridge of his nose. She was less
impressed than the others, but she still understood their
reaction. Without being prompted, she opened her notebook to the
first page and arched the pen in her hand. Instead of
immediately starting the studies, he passed out a stack of forms
       to the class.
"This is just to see what everyone knows and to get to know my
students better," he explained, moving down the rows. "Don't
worry, these will not be for a grade. Begin now and turn it in
on my desk after the class is over."
Once she got the papers, she skimmed over the questions. At
first, it was nothing bad. Just what her name was and some
random information about herself, but then the questions
       changed.
       Question #8:
Name five socialization theories and how theories have evolved
       from the original socialists.
       Question #9:
How does Mead's theory apply to society?
Thalia frowned and simply stared at the questions while students
around her filled out the papers in silence.
"No luck," she muttered beneath her breath, bitterly.

Over the past weeks, Adonis had started to wonder if Luck was a
real thing. While things in his life had been going reasonably
smoothly, things for Thalia and Pandora not so much. Pan was
going through that awkward period where being a Goddess
surrounded by humans made her feel like an outcast, and it made
her want to push her parents away. She had always been a Daddy’s
girl, but for the past few weeks, he could tell that she had
begun to resent him, and her mother for what they were, and
thus, what they had made her. The rain was consistently rainy,
or stormy, they had even had snow once! Something difficult to
       explain away in early September.
Thalia was no better off. With Pandora now in High School, and
pursuing goals and dreams, it was only natural that she feel
inadequate. She spent less and less time at home, often leaving
before the sun rose, and not returning until well after it fell.
She abandoned her job at the bar, but she often seemed tired.
When Adonis asked her about it, she wouldn’t tell him what was
wrong, or where she went on the daily. And she covered her
tracks well, as not to be followed. It was clear that she had no
intention of allowing him to aid her in whatever it was she was
       going through…
Adonis was worried, to say the least. He had considered sending
Pandora to a different school, one where she wouldn’t feel like
such an outsider for being… Different. But then, doing that
could have exactly the opposite effect. She wanted to fit in,
not to be removed… It was a lot to consider.
Meanwhile, Thalia had a classmate who was about to turn her
whole world upside down. It was rare that deities met their
worshippers in this day and age, but Anthony Wilder was a devout
worshipper of the Goddess of Fortune. He was a friendly man,
likely in his mid-thirties. He had a slight pudge, and thick
glasses. On the first day of class, he took a liking to Thalia
because her name was the same as the Goddess. And before every
Test, he always wished for the Goddess to look over the both of
them. Little did he know, he was praying directly to her face…
