       The bartender did not exclude Adonis out of her casual flirting;
fishing for tips no less. Instead of intervening, Thalia merely
watched in reserved amusement as she gave Adonis 'one on the
house' with a wink. The girl had no shame and even stood in
front of him as she bent down to scrape up a forsaken penny on
the floor. Raising a brow, Thalia shrugged. She was not one to
easily get jealous since she felt that there was no threat. Now,
if the woman touched him, then that would be free game.
It was not long until good 'ole Chuck saw her and made his way
over to her. She smirked and raised the beer to her lip as for
another sip. Just as Thalia had done, Adonis sat quietly on the
sidelines, amused no less at the free show to go along with his
       beverage; two beverages, that was.
"Yes, I know," she said, examining her nails nonchalantly. "Just
as I'm sure your wife hasn't seen you in quite some time."
The men around him encouraged him on. In his poor, drunken
state, she doubted a simple 'get lost' would suffice. She
doubted Adonis would be as amused to know of half of things that
occurred while she was a bartender. The job was not for the
       faint of heart.
"Actually, Chuck, I came back to have a drink," she said.
It was as if she shouted 'free beer'. All at once, his buddies
perked their heads up and scrambled to their feet. Chuck, being
the closest, made use of the advantage by stepping in front of
her, clearly blocking out the others. He put a hand on the bar
at her side and leaned in. She had to restrain herself from
gagging at the stench of cigarette and whiskey on his breath.
Perhaps, she had pushed her luck too far.
"Now, Thalia, you know that I'm the one for you. I know how to
       treat a lady," he persisted.
She rolled her eyes. "I'm sure your wife would disagree."
By now, his fellow bar goers had flocked around him, spouting
questions and greetings. She glanced at Adonis pointedly.
"I'm sorry guys, I'm already spoken for." Raising her hand, she
wiggled her fingers, showing off the diamond ring. She knew that
Adonis wanted to have fun with it, but she could not contain her
       excitement.
The men, on the other hand, were not as excited.
Chuck removed his hand and took a step back, narrowing his eyes
       at Adonis.
"Can't say I'm not surprised," he admitted. "Never thought she'd
       marry again."
Thalia's face drained of all of its color as she glared at the
man. The only way he would know that is because he overheard her
talking to a woman who had stumbled into the bar one night with
a bruised eye. Her jaw flexed as she finished her beer.
"Chuck, you're drunk, go home," she responded, not daring to
look at Adonis. "You clearly don't know what you're talking
       about."
Chuck frowned, a bit confused. "Nah, I'm not that drunk. I
thought you had married before. That's what you told that one
       girl, remember?"
Just then, Chuck was unfortunate enough to have a sudden
coughing fit. She took the opportunity to walk out without
       waiting of Adonis.

Adonis was all but impervious to the Bartender's overly
"friendly" behavior. He didn't even notice the second beer until
he finished the first one, after which he responded with a
grateful smile. The only thing truly worth paying attention to
was Thalia's interaction with the man she referred to as Chuck,
and soon, half the patrons of the bar. She was delightfully
brilliant, and juuuusssttt evil enough! Adonis was just about to
jump into the game when she broke and showed off her ring.
Adonis sighed and shook his head with a disappointed chuckle.
The excitement of their engagement was throwing off her
teamwork! He needed to hurry up and finish planning the wedding!
He had gotten most of the details down. All that was left was
       the invitations.
He was shaken by his thoughts by the words of an idiot. Adonis
could feel the humor draining from Thalia as soon as the man
fixed his lips to say such a thing. Of course, Thalia had told
him of her past marriage. But it wasn't a topic she liked to
speak about, even with him. And what was worse, he had the nerve
to say it again, even admitting that he had been eavesdropping
       on a private conversation!
When he broke into a cough, Thalia took the time to disappear.
And when he opened his eyes, Adonis was standing dead in his
face. "You know, the first time I saw you, I thought you were
just a drunk old man, having a good time. But you really are
stupid, aren't you?" Chuck looked angry, but he was too
bewildered by the man's aura to respond. "You don't understand
women at all. If you know Thalia's last marriage ended because
of abuse, why would you bring that up as she prepares for her
second try at happiness? No wonder you don't feel welcome at
home. You probably do things like this to your wife all the
time..." With that, he turned and walked out after his fiancee,
leaving the money behind for both of their drinks.

She knew Chuck had not meant any harm, but it was still
difficult not to blame the drunkard with the loose tongue. There
were too many memories that she did not want to remember along
with the guilt and shame that came with them.
Thalia went home knowing that Adonis would figure out where she
had ended up. When he showed up, she would be on the couch
wearing nothing but an old sweatshirt, petting Avalanche. The
dog barked upon seeing Adonis, and happily wagged his tail, but
       she did not look up.
Her fingers threaded through the dog's fur coat, but otherwise
she remained still until he came near to her. Then, she would
reach for him and motion him to sit on the couch with her.
"I'm sorry," she murmured, staring at the dog. "I just needed to
       get out of there."
       She sighed.
"I wish I could forget it all," she whispered. "Promise me, you
       won't leave or hurt me."
It was not fair to ask him that, but she needed reassurance that
he loved her and the past was a closing door. The reason she had
been single for so long was because she could not trust anyone
with what was broken in the hands of her first husband. Trusting
Adonis was as easy as breathing. She knew life was tragic, but
she trusted him with the tragedy. No matter what they went
through, she knew he would always try for her; for them.

Adonis offered a smile when he arrived at home, finding Thalia
exactly where he had expected. He seated himself on the couch,
and grabbed the hips of his wife-to-be, moving her to be seated
across his lap, where he could hold both her, and Avalanche
safe. "You don't have to apologize." He told her. Even if it
didn't happen often, she was entitled to a bad mood just like
       anyone else.
Adonis understood her desire to forget everything. Because of
that, he didn't have the heart to tell her that it was a
necessary memory; Both a learning experience, and a part of the
history that had brought her to him. Instead, he simply nodded
her head, before addressing her request.
"I swear it." He said, placing his forehead against hers gently,
as Avalanche attempted to join in the group headbutt. "You only
wish you could get rid of me that easily." With that comment, he
offered her a genuine smile. "You're mine to protect. If I hurt
you, I would automatically fail in my role as your husband.
It was then that he noticed that the game from the bar was also
on their tv. "I think you need a distraction." He said with a
mischievous grin. That look could only mean one thing. He was up
       to something naughty...

She curled up on his lap, bringing the pup with her into her
lap. Laying her head against her chest she closed her eyes. She
was happy to hear he understood and was not upset with her for
leaving the way she had. When his forehead found hers, her eyes
opened to gaze back into his while he spoke. A tender smile
       crossed her lips.
She giggled as the pup shoved his way into the embrace.
Scratching his ears, she kissed Adonis' nose.
"I trust you," she replied. "Thank you, love."
It sounded good to hear him called husband. She was getting more
and more anxious for the approaching wedding. Someone would
probably have to restrain her from sprinting down the aisle. She
glanced up when he spoke again. Nodding, she agreed with him,
but she lifted her brows, demonstrating her confusion.
"What do you have in mind?"

Thalia really was the perfect thing for Adonis. It wasn't
something he could explain, but he knew it to be true. He was
better for having her; More caring, more compassionate, and more
loving. And as the recipient of that love, he could tell that
Thalia was growing stronger as well! This bond was more than
       just fate. It was necessary.
When she asked what he had in mind, he motioned toward the tv.
"Pick which team you think is going to win." He instructed her.
He had intended to tell her the same thing back at the pub
before everything went south. "Whichever team you pick, I'll
take the other team. Loser gets tied up tonight!" He grinned and
placed a seductive kiss on the side of her neck. He had a way of
turning everything into an adventure; And she, a way of
       motivating him to do so.

The kiss was met by a giggle. What he did not know was that
after working in a bar for so long, she had become accustomed to
sports. She picked her team with all the confidence in the world
smuggled into a growing devious smile painted on her lips.
He won in the end, but not to her dismay.
       -
The next day, she awoke with a sense of foreboding. It was an
odd sensation that made her stomach churn. Perhaps, she was
       tired.
Adonis left to go run an errand, leaving her alone in the house
to fend for herself. Avalanche decided he was hungry despite
having a full bowl of dog food in the corner, so she went to
kick him a meager steak with potatoes meal. Just before she
could turn begin to defrost the meat, a 'thump' behind her
caught her attention. She turned to see a curious yellow paper
       laying flat on the counter.
Thinking Adonis was up to something, she smiled as she picked it
       up and read it.
       She knows.
The fork in her hand fell to the floor with a clatter as shock
shook the vertebrae of her spine. Her head spun as she reread
the letter, then reread and reread it again.
       No. It couldn't be.
How could she possibly know? She shook her head. It did not
matter how she knew, it only mattered that she did know; and she
       would be coming soon.
Panic and despair drew the air out of her lungs as she looked
around. Thalia had to leave all of this behind. Adonis. She had
to leave him. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she swallowed
them back. She could not let him be put in the line of danger.
Thalia went to his room and began to pack. When he would return,
he would find her sitting on the edge of the bed, bags packed at
her feet, and her eyes glued to the floor.

Adonis had returned to the Blackwood's Kingdom, to give his
mother more information about the wedding. She was the only
person who had been in the know about every move he made from
the beginning. He knew it would mean the world to her to see her
youngest married before her sicknesss took her, so he kept her
involved in the planning to keep her in high spirits. This
particular trip took longer than expected, but eventually he
       made it back home.
The first thing he noticed when he made his way home, was a
single steak on the counter. He had a sneaking suspicion it
wasn't for Thalia. Neither she, nor he ever cooked for one...
"Thalia! What did we say about feeding the dog steaks?!" When he
got no reply, he made his way up the stairs, and to their room,
where she sat, surrounded by bags. "Going somewhere?" He asked
sarcastically. He walked past her without a thought and to the
bathroom. "You know, there isn't a trip in the world that
requires THAT much luggage!" it was then that he noticed all of
the makeup and cosmetics that usually cluttered the sink were
missing. he walked back out, the jokes now faded from his eyes.
       "What's going on?"

Damning silence flooded into the room after he spoke. Thalia
could hardly maintain level eye contact, and even then it was
filled with tears that created two wet paths down her cheeks.
She did not want to have to lie to him, but she knew that he
would never allow her to leave based on the truth. He would be
all too loyal and fight for her, denying his safety. But, if he
       died...
She let out a shuddering breath at the idea of it. With
trembling lips, she pried apart the walls of their relationship
with words of ice knowing it would be the only way to keep him
       from stopping or chasing her.
"You have spoiled me, but you cannot give me what I need."
I need you to be safe, her thoughts screamed out to him.
"I had to end it now, before everything. I'm sorry. I deserve
       better."
You deserve better, her thoughts challenged.
More tears fell as she shook her head and stood up, bags in
hand. Her voice was becoming too thick and all too telling. She
knew if she did not leave soon she would change her mind. This
was the best thing for him. It was. But the feel of her heart
plummeting and breaking denied the fact. It all hurt so badly.
If last night she had known, she would have kissed him longer,
held him tighter, and she would not have wasted precious time
       sleeping.
"I'm sorry," she murmured, her breathing ragged. "You will
       always be my friend."
To hell with friendship. Her thoughts echoed in her mind as she
looked down at the ring she wore.
Pulling it off of her finger had never felt more wrong. She laid
it on the bed as her shoulders shook with a sob she could longer
deny. Her cheeks were now soaked along with the neckline of her
blouse. She shook her head, attempting to draw enough strength
to look at him, but she simply could not. None of this was fair.
She never wanted to hurt him.
"I loved you," she swore, unable to meet his gaze as she cried.
       "I'm so sorry."
       I still do. Always will.

Adonis eyes narrowed as Thalia spoke. They had played some
pretty horrible pranks on each other, but this time, Adonis
wasn't laughing. But the worse part was, Thalia wasn't laughing
       either...
"This isn't funny..." It was rare for Adonis to take that tone
with anyone, let alone Thalia. It was low, and borderline
threatening. but the "jk" Never came. Adonis searched her eyes
desperately for a sign that it was just a cruel prank, and that
after he got over his anger, they would be fine. But it didn't
take long for it to become apparent that Thalia really intended
       to leave.
Every word she spoke was like a dagger, driving straight into
Adonis' chest. But that wasn't the worst part! She hadn't really
told him her reason! "Well what is it you need? If you just let
me know, I know I can provide you with anything!" However, her
harsh words didn't match her face. If there was anything Adonis
understood, it was love. and Thalia's expression didn't indicate
her love existed only in past tense.
He wouldn't just accept this. He couldn't!When the sorry apology
fell from her lips, he stood strong, despite his desire to
simply fall apart. "You're a liar." His voice was like ice; The
desperacy in his tone replaced with malice. "If you want to walk
out on me, go ahead and leave. But don't you dare walk out that
door with such a bullshit excuse!"
A woman who felt the way Thalia had just described didn't leave
with tears streaming down her face. She felt empowered by her
decision. Happy even. But Thalia didn't feel strong. If anything
she was weaker than ever! "If that's how you really feel, then
explain the tears flowing down your face!" His eyes challenged
her in a way that his words had never done before. "Tell me the
truth!" He yelled practically loud enough to break the
       foundation of their... his... home.
