With Any Luck
By: guest1266 Date: December 30, 2015, 7:35 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The world was laden with white snow that crunched beneath her
feet with every step in the 'wrong' direction. She could detect
her name in the distant pleas of those from the search and
rescue party, but that never deterred her from where she was
heading. The humans had it all wrong. They were much too far
East, she could just feel it. Of course, they would never
understand.
"Thalia, you have gotten off path. You need to immediately
turn-" She turned off the walkie talkie and shoved it into the
deep pocket of her coat.
To pass the time, she began to count the trees that she passed.
Before she got to five, she lost count due to how similar the
trees looked and how they all rolled into one in her mind. The
mountains were silent this time of night. If they did not find
the bay within the hour, the search party would give up for the
night and resume in the morning. Only then, it would become a
find body search.
Before long, she heard the barely audible whimpers of a child
and smiled triumphantly. She called out to him, but he did not
answer. Poor thing was probably frightened and disoriented. When
she spotted him, he was lying in the snow, wrapped up in a faded
plaid coat shivering violently against the wind.
The goddess of fortune was out of luck and had no other source
of heat to provide him with except her own winter coat. Wrapping
him up in her coat, she pulled him up and carried him in his
arms. The air was too damn frigid.
"Are you an a-angel?" he asked, his teeth chattering rapidly as
he spoke.
His voice was so faint, it tugged at her heart.
She emitted a chuckle in spite of everything. "No, child."
He shoved his head further against her bossom, making her shiver
in response.
"Where's m-my momma?" he asked.
She hugged him tighter. "She's waiting for you. You'll be okay,
I promise, okay?"
Even when she knew she could keep her word, she never vowed, but
this was a special case.
He did not respond, but she did not press. They both knew how it
looked. When they had finally reached the others, the boy was
not responsive. Thalia surrendered him to the EMTs and stood
back. A man stepped forward and hurriedly bound her in a
blanket. She took it lamely and ignored everyone's questions.
As soon as no one was looking she vanished, leaving no trace
behind.
Thalia reappeared in the pub's bathroom. Fortunately, it was
empty and she was able to change out of her wet clothes. Once
she was finished, she went to work her shift as the bartender.
It was a mediocre job, but it amused her to be around mortals in
a drunken state. They were much more fun to toy with when they
could not think straight.
As she worked the bar, she would smile mischievously before
little things happened; a lucky card hand, a man with no manners
losing all his money, etc. No one would think anything of it
unless they were aware such beings as her existed.

Tragedy...
It was Adonis' forte. He had an intimate relationship with
Tragedy. He understood it in ways others couldn't imagine. It
was only natural, as the Blackwood of Tragedy. He was drawn to
it, like a moth to a lukewarm flame. The God rarely
intentionally caused tragedies of any sort though. Rather, he
was drawn to them. He could feel them approaching, and traveled
to meet with them; To watch how they played out like the newest
movie to hit theaters. He had a fixation on how mortals dealt
with Tragedy; Whether they accepted them with grace; Whether
they fought against them; Whether they learned from them...
This time his senses had lead him to the Swiss Mountains, where
a boy was fated to die a cold and lonely death, while an
incompetent rescue team searched in the wrong place. Adonis got
no pleasure from death. But he also found that it was far ore
beneficial to the mortals when he didn't interfere with the path
fate had set out for them. Also, he didn't have to hear Aetus'
mouth...
Adonis was sitting on the roof of the Inn the boy had been
staying at, silently wishing he had dressed for cold weather.
Helicopters were above, making quite the racket up above. Search
lights and people yelling everywhere. It really was quite the
episode, just for such a sad ending, but that was the nature of
the world. Adonis was watching quietly, when suddenly he felt a
divine hand interfering with the Tragedy that nature had set in
place. A frown took hold of his face as he looked out in the
direction where the boy lay. Some time later, a woman appeared,
carrying the boy against her bosom. She was bombarded by mortals
congratulating her, and asking her questions which she payed no
mind. She clearly didn't belong among them. And once their
attention was diverted, she faded away.
But not away from the perception of the God that watched her
though. He quickly followed, unsure of where his transport would
land him. He ended up in a pub nearby, where he could sense the
presence of a Diety in a nearby restroom. He took a seat at the
bar, elbows resting against it as he faced away, examining the
area. Much to his suprise, when the woman that he presumed to be
a Goddess, placed herself behind the bar! He turned around and
flashed her a smile. "Not every day you see a Goddess working a
bar." He said. It might have just sounded like an everyday
pickup line. In fact, that was his intention. But just maybe,
she would pick up on what he had noticed.

A man, nay, a god, seated himself at the edge of the counter
directly in front of her. She assessed him with a sideways
glance, but otherwise ignored him until he spoke. His words
brought a smirk to her lips; a cool, thoughtful smile filled
with mischief. She kept up her pretense among the mortals as she
noticed the way same drunks leaned forward to eavesdrop on their
conversation.
"Why, you're truly too kind, Sir," she said, dimples appearing
in her cheeks as her smile grew. "Surely Athena or Aphrodite
would be much more lovely than I. To liken me to one of those is
insulting to them."
The bar-goers sitting around the bar chuckled, detecting the
hint of sarcasm in her voice. In the past, the majority of the
men had attempted to get her to return with them for a nightcap
and they had all failed. However, the sarcasm was not for them,
but for his enjoyment.
She set him up a glass of beer without his asking, and placed it
on the bar in front of him. Thalia placed her palms down on the
countertop on either side of the bar as her gaze studied his. He
had strong, yet attractive features, but then, did not most
gods? Her bangs hid her left eye as she tilted her head and bit
her lip thoughtfully, yet purposefully.
"Let me guess, you'd be a god too," she said, sarcasm still
evident in her words. The men around them stifled smiles and
chuckles, but she ignored them. "Perhaps, the god of tragedy?"
The highlanders suddenly roared with laughter. To his left, the
most obnoxious one of the bunch, fell backwards after the leg of
his chair broke. She sighed and shook her head.
"Sfen, I'm sorry. I keep telling the innkeeper to come over and
look at the chairs," she said.
The man, clearly angry, scrambled to his feet and glared at
Thalia, making her grin.
"That is the fourth time this week!" he exclaimed.
She nodded. "I know, babe. You must not have very good luck."
He mumbled an incoherent curse and stumbled out of the bar. Soon
after, she ushered the rest of the drunks out and locked up.
"You can stay, I just don't want their wives to worry too much,"
she said, shaking her head as she thought of the men.
Thalia wore tight leggings beneath a short, red sweater dress
with a brown belt around her hips. Her boots were high, nearly
reaching her knees. As usual, she wore her hair loose, allowing
the curls to wildly cascade down her back. The attire was odd
for the area, especially in a bar, but she enjoyed not blending
in.
She walked back behind the bar and poured herself a beer before
leaning against the bar in front of him.
"So, was I right?" she asked, her voice now void of sarcasm, but
her lips still caressed the same smirk that held a million
secrets.

She was clever. Adonis liked that. It was funny that she
mentioned Aphrodite though. Adonis had met Aphrodite. She had a
thing for his cousin. "I've met Aphrodite." He said with a grin.
"Trust me when I say your company would be much more appealing."
He winked at her and turned to the men who snickered at his
apparent failed pickup line. He didn't mind them. They weren't
on a level to even halfway comprehend what was happening before
their eyes. He took down half of his beer and grinned when the
woman asked if he was a God. "Only on my bad days." He said with
a smirk. "My name's Adonis, by the way." He offered his hand to
shake, but instead, would kiss the back of her hand, should she
offer it
He was surprised, however, when she called out his proper title.
Did she know who he was already? That would be surprising, as he
was nowhere near as famous as many other Gods, even within his
own family! He never shed his smile though.
When the man fell from his seat, Adonis eyed the Goddess on the
other side of the bar. He didn't laugh, only watch their
exchange in silence. "Luck, eh?" He asked under his breath. "Now
that's interesting..." His eyes remained planted on her as she
ushered the group out of the bar and locked the door. His smile
grew more mischievous when she asked if she was right. "If I was
the God of Tragedy, don't you think I'd be upset over you
interfering with that boy's fate?" He winked once more and got
up from the bar, instead moving to a seat at a table, motioning
for the Goddess to join him. "Actually my title is God of Love."
He said dismissively. "But if you're familiar with the Blackwood
family, you'll understand that I have a much closer relationship
with Tragedy...
His eyes then settled on hers, peering into them as if searching
for something deep within her. "And you're the Goddess of Luck,
I pressume? Would that be good or bad?" He had never heard of
such a thing, but then, his family was full of strange and
unusual Gods. Who was he to judge?

She highly doubted her company was better than Aphrodite's, but
she let him think it was for the time being. There was no fun in
giving herself away this early on. When he gave his name, she
smiled and took his hand.
"Thalia," she offered in response as he kissed her hand.
The kiss was soft and gentle; entirely deceiving. It was almost
enough for her to be flattered, but not quite.
At the mention of the boy, Thalia grinned.
"I'm unsure of that. Depends what your version of tragedy is.
Life or death," she answered.
Thalia was taken aback when he said he was the god of love. Love
was tragic, but she was sure that not all cases were. It seemed
a bit depressing.
"So it's your fault I've had such bad luck with men." Thalia
shook her head, feigning a dissapointed expression, ignoring the
irony in her own words. Although she was the goddess of fortune,
she never messed with her own life, including her love affairs.
"I'm not familiar with the family, it was merely a lucky guess."
She flipped her hair over her shoulder before taking a drink of
her beer. This was proving to be a most interesting meeting.
Usually the other deities she ran across were prudes or
egotistical. Adonis was different, but that only made her
suspicious.
"Something like that," she answered, continuing her charade. "It
would depend on who you talk to."
Thalia finished her drink and then cleaned the cup before
placing it back on the shelf.
"So, Cupid, wanna show me what you can do?" she asked, flashing
him a wink.
She clapped her hands and they were suddenly sitting in a
restaurant instead of the pub. Thalia was dressed in a short
black dress with a modest neckline and he wore a simple suit
with no tie. Her brow raised in a challenging way. For most, her
sporadic behavior was too off-putting and exhausting.
"Round one!" shouted a man by the entrance of the establishment.
On cue, a crowd flooded in and began to sit in the empty spots
around them.
"Show me how you treat a lady," she whispered, before winking
and going a few chairs over to an older gentleman.
Though she had never done speed daring before, she had always
wanted to. It was an excellent chance to mess with mortals. She
glanced over to Adonis and gave him a wink.

Adonis smiled when Thalia asked her question. It was exactly the
correct one. "You're an insightful one." He said with a smile.
"It's not in life or death that a tragedy is marked, but in
loss." He looked out the window at the snowy lands. "The boy's
death in itself would not have been the tragedy, rather, his
loved ones that must now go on without him." That was the
reality that few embraced. But it was steadfast law.
Adonis grinned and took down the rest of his beer when she
suggested he was the reason for her bad luck with men. "Perhaps
it's because you've been yet to meet me that you've had such...
Bad luck?" He threw up air quotes with the words 'bad luck.'
It was clear that she was keeping a lot to herself. Though that
was to be expected. No one offered up everything to a stranger.
And Gods tended to be full of secrets.
Cupid... He knew the reference, though he had never been likened
to the mythological love archer. he kind of liked it! But he had
no clue what she meant when she said to show her what he was
capable of! It would all be made clear though, when they were
transported to a speed dating site! Even their attire had been
changed! He laughed out loud and took in the site. He was going
to like this one! She had a playful streak, much like himself!
At this site, the women seemed to be the ones who rotated. It
was unusual, but fine either way. The woman who sat across from
him was beautiful! Not as beautiful as Thalia, mind you, but she
was quite the looker! He smiled and engaged the woman, as the
women on either side of his table practically ignored their
dates to swoon over him.
Meanwhile, a damper gentleman sat across from Thalia. "Luke
Patton. Pleasure to meet you." He said, taking the Goddesses
hand to plant a kiss on it. He was explaining his career to her,
when suddenly, lovestruck men from every table invaded their
space, all anxious to get their chance at the woman that they
had suddenly fallen in love with. the moderator tried
desperately to restore order, while Adonis watched in amusement
from his seat. He couldn't have intentionally caused such an
event, and yet, it was too perfect! She wanted to see what he
could do. This was exactly that!

Although it was definitely tragic that his loved ones would face
immense grief following the boy's death, there was also the
implied tragedy of a life cut too short. The boy had dreams and
goals. Without a prolonged life, his ambitions would have never
come to pass. He would have not gotten the chance to live for
something worth dying for. His death would have been lonely and
one of suffering.
But, she let these thoughts fall away as she smiled at his
pickup line.
"Perhaps," she considered, though there was an evident trace of
disbelief in her voice.
She had become accustomed to gods promising the heavens when
they weren't even capable of giving her themselves. Which was
why she never dated. Relationships were based on technicalities
set by tradition. No one really wanted to commit to someone else
when it became inconvenient or difficult.
She thought back to his words now as the man at her table
introduced himself. The moment he had started talking about his
career, he had thrown away any chance of seeing her again.
Although, the career actually sounded interesting.
Thalia glanced over to see how well Adonis was doing, but she
was immediately distracted by the crowd of men surrounding her.
She sat back in her chair and crossed her legs, clearly amused.
Before she could allow his date to slip him her number, they
reappeared back at the pub in their original clothing. She
laughed and poured herself another beer.
"Point taken," she said, taking a seat beside him at the bar.
"So are you married or dating? Seems odd for the god of love to
be single."

Adonis' first date was just suggesting that she would like to
contact him again in the future, when he was suddenly back in
the bar, seated next to the real prize. He picked up his beer
and finished it off casually, as if they had never left, and
grinned as she told him that she understood. With a grin, he put
the empty glass back on the bar, and looked over at the Goddess
that accompanied him.
"You'd be surprised just how much of a burden that title can
be." He said. "Love isn't something that even I can control." He
admitted. "If I tried to make you fall in love with me, I could
very well make you fall in love with this empty glass instead."
Adonis understood both the scientific, and the emotional aspects
of love. But that didn't mean he could control either. The mind
of humans, and like creatures were too erratic. He could raise
or lower a peerson's oxytocin levels, but he couldn't direct the
feelings that came along with them. He could end a love that was
meant to be overlasting. But he couldn't control the way it
happened. "So yes. I'm very single. I take it your 'Bad luck
with men,' means that you are as well?"

"An empty glass?" she asked, appalled.
Thalia repositioned herself in her chair so that she was facing
him with a devilish grin.
"Now that would be tragic. A full glass on the other hand," she
shrugged.
She tilted her glass back idly as she folded her legs in front
of her. The man was intelligent and seemingly enjoyable company.
However, she still was cautious around him. There had to be
something to steer women away from him, or at least a reason he
had not settled yet. He was handsome, smart, and funny. It was a
wonder that no one had snatched him up yet, but the same could
be said for her, she guessed.
She nodded. "Yes, I am single. Relationships aren't my forte and
neither are mixed drinks, hence the beer."
Disposing of the mischievous smirks, a genuine smile took their
place. Within her left cheek was the faint outline of a lone
dimple. She tapped her index finger on the rim of the beer
thoughtfully.
"Do you believe that luck exists?" she asked curiously.

Adonis was good at looking women in the eye. Most men gave into
the temptation of eyeing a woman's body, especially when their
shoulders were squared to each other. When Thalia turned her
chair to face the God, he did the same for her. His gaze never
once fell from her eyes. "If you fell in love with a full glass,
you would never want to empty it. Now which is the REAL
tragedy?" He winked and eyed his glass for just a second before
returning his eyes to the place that really deserved their
attention.
He chuckled when she likened her difficulty with relationships
to one with mixed drinks. "Good thing Gods typically don't have
to work hard to maintain their shapes then, huh?" It was common
knowledge that a beer contained far more calories than a mixed
drink. Also it was likely to get you full than drunk.
It was clear that she was attempting to read him, to determine
whether or not he posed some sort of threat, and if so, what
type. Perhaps even if he had some sort of perceivable weakness.
Even so, she was able to maintain her charm flawlessly. Her
question caused the Love God to raise a brow in contemplation.
He tapped his glass, willing it to fill up once more, and took
down a large gulp. "My cousin is the God of Fate." He explained.
"If there's such a thing as fate, it's hard to imagine that Luck
wouldn't be just as real. Besides, aren't I looking at the
world's most gorgeous embodiment of luck?" He liked the way she
played games. So few he had the pleasure of meeting could
tolerate his playful streak, much less match it.
