Coeur d'Alene
By: Caroline Date: December 21, 2015, 12:58 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Children’s laughter echoes through the green meadow, the rustle
of leaves prominent too as a breeze tries to take them down, but
a few surrendering to the harsh wind. In the distant sky, the
sun sets with promises to wake again tomorrow leaving in it’s
wake a swirl of deep oranges, different hues of yellow, like a
Pheonix going to sleep. The mothers are preparing dinner for the
men of the tribe, coming back from a day of hunting; their lean
builds making them not only the providers but the protectors of
their people.
“Catori! Chepi!”
The twins run to their mother, giggling and breathless from
chasing a butterfly in the woods, both obediently sitting at the
round dinner table on the floor. They had inherited their
mother’s element, but in fear of their lack of training, the
woman had stored their power in two emerald stones, hanging from
their necks. The tribesmen hadn’t been informed either, the
blind woman who was now setting food on the table worried the
girls’ power would intimidate them; after all, they were only
four, and had power beyond anything imaginable.

It was a harsh step back into reality when the woman wakes in
the middle of the night with a sharp gasp, sitting upright and
panting as beads of sweat trickle down her forehead to the side
of her temple. Though she was blind and the sky was as black as
coal, every other sense in her body was heightened; she could
make out the soft dirt under her fingers, debris scattered along
the ground of the woods. There was a deer not far from her, and
she smiles, head tilting in its direction.
“O si yo, do hi tsu?”
The woman reaches out, slender arms patient and before long, the
deer’s tongue flickers along the palm of her stretched hand, the
other free one petting the animal’s head.
In the night, she could see better than any other, for darkness
was something the woman had become accustomed to; they
accommodated each other like the moon and the scattered stars
surrounding it. The visions were getting darker, and harder to
handle. The absence of her tribe tore at her, but even more than
that, her little girls left in their care. She knew they
wouldn’t harm the little ones, but they’d be occupied with their
own children to show them the same motherly affection. There was
also the problem of their elements; if one needed, they could
harness the power in the stones and unleash it, depending on
their capability.
When the animal makes it’s way into the woods, she gathers her
belongings and gets back up for sleep was a lost thing now and
she couldn’t possibly regain it after the nightmares. For
months, she had been trying to find her family, but it was as if
someone had cloaked them - she couldn’t even get in touch with
them spiritually.
Cha’kwaina lacked the will to go on, but she was motivated by
the mere thought of her daughters, letting the wind lead her.
