House of Angels

Dicey headed home. Heart broken. She and her cousin had traveled
together many years in search of Razie Angel. Or the body of
that is. They had sworn not to return home until they had Razie
alive and well at their side. Dicey couldn't do it anymore.
Razie had hidden herself well and didn't want to be found. By
now her body would be gone. There had been an alert though. All
of the Angels were to return home.
She was almost certain that Riley would be back soon. Dicey
looked up to the large estate from the gate. She was a teenager
when she had left in search of her sister. The grounds where a
waste land of what was. The plant life was dead. Bare trees
lined the long path way to the house. She remembered the trees
were full of life and bared ripe and plump fruit. The whole
place was falling apart.
Dicey walked up two steps and nearly fell through. Splintered
wood cut her calf up to her knee. Blood beaded on the open skin.
"Shit." She whispered and carefully made her way to the door.
When she walked in her uncle Francis greeted her with a big hug.
Dicey nearly suffocated in his beard. 'Where is my daughter at?"
Francis asked when he finally released her.
Dicey chewed her lip and looked down. 'About a month ago we had
an argument. I haven't heard from her since." Francis sighed
and patted her shoulder. " I am sure she heard the call. Come
on. You need to come see your great grand mother." Grams was the
matriarch of their family and the owner of the estate. What was
going on? Her gut dropped when she saw family scattered
throughout the house. Several she had only seen in pictures.
"Is Grams dying?" She asked coming to a halt at the bottom of
the stairs. She refused to take another step. Francis got that
look. The look when something bad has happened. "She passed.
This morning. We are planning a funeral in the morning. We
tried to get a hold of you before but it was hard to get the
message out. I sorry Dice." She...didn't get to say good bye.
Her stomach dropped. Her heart jumped into her throat. Francis
wrapped her up in another hug. Tears flowed freely as Dicey
sobbed.

Riley didn't want to be here. Not when she hadn't fulfilled her
promise. She gave up. Ready to start her own life. She lived
in Razie 's shadow for too long. The girl killed herself. She
didn't want to be found. And now here stood Riley on the porch
of the shell of the home that Razie and Dicey had grown up in.
Riley spent many holidays with them.
There was a hole on the steps. The yard looked like it hadn't
been cared for in years. She reached for the handle but drew
back. Was Dicey here? The girls were best friends since Razie
disappeared. Searching for her for years. Till they got in the
fight. Then she hadn't seen her at all. What did she tell the
family. What did she tell Grams? Panic struck her . Grams being
the matriarch feared nothing. She would tan a child or an 80
year old if they deserved it.
Then she heard Dicey crying. Riley had a sick feeling. She
burst through the door to find Dicey hugging on her dad. "Daddy
what's happening?" But before he could respond Dicey sobbed out
the word Grams. Riley didn't waste a moment. Pushing past her
father. Past Dicey. Ignoring their warnings to stop. She ran
into Grams room.
Long white hair once red and full of life framed the wrinkled
face of her. She looked like she was sleeping. Riley touched her
and drew back fast. She was so cold! With a yelp she jumped back
half expecting the woman to live. To roll out of bed and be
Grams again. But it would never happen. When a matriarch died
of old age there was no coming back. They were just gone.
