Kitsune Tales

Vixey sniffed at the claw marks left on the tree by some animal.
She turned to her sister with a frown and shook her head."It's
not kitsune." Sometimes she feared they would never find any
trace of their kitsune tribe. Years ago the tribe had been lost
and scattered in the great war. The last ambush by the harpes
was the end of them. Vixey and her sister were pups then. They
were left without parents. But the girls knew they weren't dead.
No bodies ever found. So together the girls searched for any
member of their tribe still alive. Growing up together and
reaching milestones that they would have learned growing up in
their tribe. In that time they found kitsunes in passing but
none members of their tribe.
Vixey shook her head and smiled and perked her ears up."I have
an idea. There is a festival over in Mancoon. Kitsunes are
naturally drawn to parties. Maybe we will find someone there? If
not we could have some fun and possibly get some cash." She
winked at her sister. Implying that they would steal it. Her
tails swished as she giggled excitedly. She had always loved a
goos party. This if nothing at all would be a good break.

Naomi watched her sister check the tree, she was far less
optimistic that anyone would be found. She left out a sigh and
just twisted her yellowish orange hair around her finger. As her
sister spoke out about a party Naomi perked up, "A party does
sound fun, I enjoy the jingling of hard earned cin I didn't work
for in my pocket." Naomi gave Vixey a devious little smile and a
slight giggle before her ears sunk again. "Not sure about the
other part although...I mean I hope we can find someone to help
us find the truth but I am not getting my hopes up." Naomi
looked down at the grass where an worm quickly dove into the
dirt. She put her foot over the tiny hole it made and moved her
foot back and forth to cover it up.

Vixey excitedly squeezed Naomi's arm and squeezed. "I'm excited
anyway." She grinned and started to glide through the forest,
darting between trees with ease and ducking under branches as if
she were limboing. Red tails flying behind her as she went. She
looked back and giggled at her sister and ran into
something...Something very hard. She turned around and looked up
to see a tall dark man who's face was covered by a mask. "You
two are pretty little kitsune's. I hear kitsune fur catches a
high price these days." His breath smelled awful. Her nose
wrinkled and she looked back over her shoulder to see Naomi."Run
Naomi! I"ll catch up."
One of the men hurried up to the tall man holding Vixey by the
shirt collar. He held up a peice of paper."Boss look these are
them! The two they are looking for!" The man looked to the sign
then back to Vixey. "So it is! Get the other one." Vixey growled
at him and grabbed his arms, running her legs up his own to his
chest and kicking till he let go. She fell on the ground with a
hard bump before she scrambled away. Just in time. The large man
did a nose dive for her. "Naomi! Lets go!" By this time the men
were swarming around. At least a group of ten or fifteen
bandits. She tried to catch sight of her sister through the
crowd when a sack went over her head and her tails were bound
together.

Naomi left out a fake laugh to Vixey but as she darted off in
excitement Naomi gasped out, "H-hey! Wait! Vixey!" Vixey was so
fast, Naomi hurried to catch up with her at first stumbling to
the ground. Quickly she picked herself back up and rushed
through the forest. She managed to keep her sisters sent,
bobbing around trees and though bushes only to catch her being
held by a hunter. She could smell more along with whisky. Her
stomach knotted up and she froze in her spot.
"B-But Vixey!" She cried out but only to see more appear. She
looked about for an idea, her sister now consumed in a crowd of
hunters bound like a deer. "Oh no, what should I do my fox fire
isn't much for this many people!" Naomi was worried now trying
to devise a plan of action. She had to help Vixey, her two tails
shaking behind her. She focused and a blue ball of fire
appeared in her hand, it wasn't very big but it could set the
dried grass near them on fire. Sadly this would cause a larger
problem for the forest but if she didn't Vixey could be hurt, or
worse.
Naomi threw her fire ball to the dried leaves, smoke began to
rise and a crinkling noise began. The smell of smoke choked the
forest's natural sent. Flames started to rise and spread, faster
than Naomi imaged. She swallowed hard as her eyes got wider. "Oh
no" she uttered as she used this time to quickly run though and
try to save her sister as flames consumed everything they
touched.

She could smell smoke. "Naomi no this whole place will be in
flames. " But from the sound of the cracking leaves it already
was. She could hear coughing next to her head. That must have
been the bandit. She growled and herded her body. Luckily she
managed to pull free.
By the time the bag was removed Vixey could not stop the gulp.
The bag had caught fire. She realized this was no time to stand
still so instead she ran over and grabbed Naomi by the arm. "I
love you sis. Thanks for saving my ass but the flames almost
killed me"! Speaking of. Vixey looked back at her tails. One of
them was singed and smoking.
"Let's go before tall dark and ugly gets us." She panted and
covered her mouth with her shirt. The smile burning her eyes.
Vixey held her shirt with one hand. Naomis arm with the other.
Pulling her out of the smoke and away from danger. Her chest
felt weird as she ran. And strangely couldn't stop coughing. "
Let's go find water." She whispered hoarsely.

Naomi coughed lightly and noticed her sister's poor tail, "Oh
no..I am so sorry I paniced and I didn't know what more I could
do..." as they fled she looked back at the mess she caused. No
matter how far they ran the smoke was still visible. Naomi felt
slightly sick; she had now totally destroyed a whole community!
Animals returning home would find it gone and the ones, god
forbid, there would have had to fled or died. "I can't believe
what I done..." She mumbled under her breath in a upset tone
before her sister mentioned getting water. "Yes I think water is
best."
She looked around and pulled from Vixey trying to find the best
way to go. A rock near them had a slight moss growth, and if she
remembered correctly a stream of fresh water was somewhere north
of them. "We should go this way," she pointed the way the moss
was growing, "I think I remember a stream up this way." Naomi
looked to her sister for not just her approval but for a sign
she was going to be able to continue. After all she wasn't too
sure how badly Vixey was hurt..

She And Naomi finally came to a stop at the stream. Her tails
were singed but not much more. Vixey smiled to her sister.
"Thank you really. You did what you had to do to save me.
Without it I would be dead. He wanted to kill us." She reached
down and cupped her hand taking a drink of the water. It soothed
her throat
"I guess we've developed a reputation. They said that we were
anyway. We have to be more careful. I'm sorry I was carless."
She had nearly gotten them both killed. Vixey sighed and pulled
her tails from the water. At least it wasn't too burned. She
gave Naomi a weary smile.

Naomi joined her sister in a drink, her hands touched the cool
water and cupped them together. As she raised her hands to her
face to drink the cold water ran down her arms slightly. As the
water depleated she looked over st Vixey, "We were both
careless, we have become sloppy..."
Naomi's two tails laid beside her and she began to brush them
with her hands. "We need to learn more of these gifts and
protect them." Although she herself knew this was easier said
then done. Her and her sister had different gifts; pretty much
all kitsunes did yet the elders from their village were still
able to teach about them. They needed guidence and security but
how, they were alone. Naomi left out a sigh, "maybe we should
rest here tonight?"

She nodded. "I think you are right. But we need to hide. Those
guys will probably be hunting us. And we need some dinner. I
think you and I should split up for now. I will hunt us up some
grub and you stay here and make shelter. We stay in ear shot. If
I'm not back in an hour move out of the area. Go on without me.
I'll find you soon enough. "
Yes it was kind of bossy. But they needed shelter and a place to
hide and a warm meal. So this was about the best they could do.
Besides that night would be drawing soon and they would both
need warmth. Her fire would save their asses. Again in one day.
She smiled at her sister. "We will leave at dawn though. No use
hanging around that long. "

Naomi just nodded at her sister, "Oh-okay be careful." She
always looked up to her sister since the incident that left them
alone. Vixey to her was so smart and brave while she on the
inside was so afraid. Slowly she began to go her own way down
the river and deeper in the trees to find something to do for
shelter.
As he walked she touched the bark of trees she passed, her
animal friends have shown her hunters will mark certain trees as
a way to find their way about. This would mean they are more
likely to come back this way. "Hmm." She hummed to her self as
she checked the trees; little did she know she was standing on a
slight hill and stepped right off the side. Naomi squealed as
she slipped right down falling on her back and letting out an
"oaf".
Her eyes opened to see trees standing tail above her. She rolled
onto her stomach in an attempt to get up but froze solid as she
was face to face with a fox. "Oh hello there." She said but the
fox just tilted it's head. Behindit she noticed a cave or burrow
in the hill. Big enough for her and her sister to fit in yet
small enough that it was hidden by fallen tree logs and tree
roots. "Is that your home? Would you be willing to let my sister
and I join you? I can offer food. Cooked food." The fox just sat
and looked at her making a noise then licking it's paw. Naomi
got off her stomach and on her knees letting out a sigh, "I
assume you don't mind."
