Re: Second Choice

She knew she had made a muck of things before she hit. What she
did not expect was the slap that came from her father. He had
never struck her before. She looked over to Cole in horror who
was already moving. Standing between her and her father. Why did
he defend her after the lie? Then when he realized she saw it.
It seemed he just did not register it that fast. Now he spoke to
her. In a different tone. Her fathers face became redder in his
anger. Fists balling up. "No." Delphine started. But her father
interjected. In this time Delphine took the time to stand. Face
glowing red for another reason. That reason was the back of her
fathers hand.
"No! She is not. Angelique is a whore. She ran out on you.
Delphine came up with the idea. The devil must have taken our
daughter and cursed us with her. Even her looks match. We will
just have to keep our burden. Please give your father our
apologies. We understand the goods are not to your liking any
way. This is your way out. " Her father guffawed.
"It was not my idea!" Delphine cried out. Her mother covered her
mouth. "Hush heathen! You have done enough." Delphine pulled
away, tears streaming her face. "I haven't done anything! This
is your show!" She leaned down and untied the uncomfortable
shoes and kicked them aside. Her mother and father barking out
disapprovals. She only straightened and glared at them before
heading from the room.

Everything was falling apart so fast! But at the same time, it
was also coming together; the bizarre behavior of her parents,
their refusal to attend the wedding in his father's presence.
Disgust filled Cole's eyes as he listened to the Count's
explanation. He huffed and narrowed his eyes pointedly. "Lady
Angelique's abdication of our meeting is neither your fault,
nor your responsibility." It was the first time since the shit
bit the fan that Cole spoke to the Count without anger or malice
in his voice. "But the life altering deception you attempted
here today was unforgivable. My father would expect more from
the man he calls a life-long friend..."
When the Count dismissed him, Cole nodded his head and made his
way to the window. He then called down to his driver. "Prepare
the carriage! We'll be leaving immediately! " when he turned
around, Delphine was on her way out the door. "Lady Delphine!"
He called out to her. When she turned around, he approached
her. His hand gently traced the bruise forming on the side of
her face. He examined it before looking her in the eye. "Are
you ready to go?" He asked. "We should leave quickly. We'll
have to gather some ice for four face before it begins to
swell." There was a smile on his face, but beneath it, his
eyes told a tale of concern. He offered the lady his hand, and
prepared to usher her to his carriage.

She turned. Everything was moving in slow motion. Did he say
we? After her deception he still called out to her! It was
surreal. Demanding she be ready to leave. He actually wanted her
to go with him. Delphine's heart swelled and tears formed in her
eyes.
"Yes I'm packed. I my father intended to have my things loaded
up during the wedding. " She herded her chin in the direction of
the window. "I suppose everything is out side now." The
realization of how eager they were ready to be rid of her was
unsettling to her. How could they hate her so much.
Her mother touching her shoulder brought her back to reality.
Her father had left the room. Delphine sharply gasped when the
iced cloth touched her cheek. Attached to it her mothers hand.
"I know this makes us terrible people. In the day and age it is
though. It is so easy to get caught up in all that is
beautiful. And we'll I know my word doesn't mean much." Her
mother put the ice in Delphine's hand and tuned to Cole. "But I
request that you treat her better than we did." Delphine could
have swore she saw her mother's eyes mist over before she turned
from the two talking to them over her shoulder. "I need to go
check on my husband. You two should probably get go..." her
voice muffling when the large wooden doors behind her mother.

It was clear that Delphine was surprised that Coke still
expected her to come with him. In a way, he was surprised too!
But how could he possible leave her with these people to be
abused and belittled? She deserved much better than that! He
didn't know what his father would have to say about the
situation, but as far as he was concerned, he had come to
gather a wife, and that was what he intended to do!
He was just preparing to take Delphine by the hand when another
hand reached for her first! The hand belonged to her mother,
and it treated the young woman's face with ice. It was slightly
comforting to see that she had a human side after all...
Calyx eyes narrowed when she made her request of him. He wanted
to tell her that that would be easy; that they treated their
livestock better than the Count and his wife treated Lady
Delphine! But instead he nodded his head. "I will. " he said
solemnly, before taking Delphine by the hand, and leading her
to the Carriage.

Everything was happening so fast. Before she knew it she and her
few belongings were gathered in a carriage and she was off to
her knew life. All her possessions consisted of the dress she
wore. And three other ones. A pale blue, a dark yellow one and a
black one. Also she had a brush and a couple hair fixings but
nothing special. Some under clothed as well. Besides her current
dress the rest were worn pretty badly.
She turned to him. "I am sorry for the deception. I do thank you
for taking me from there." She put the ice on her cheek and
sighed. "Where do you plan to take me? I know the deception was
not very nice but if you would allow me to I am willing to work
on your families estate if you would give me room and board. I
learned long ago how to work as a servant. "

When they arrived at the carriage, Cole was surprised at the
extremely small amount of luggage that Delphine had brought with
her. It could all fit into one bag! This couldn't be all that
she owned! No. She probably expected to gather new belongings in
her new home. That would make sense. She just brought the
essentials.
She was extremely apologetic, but Cole waved her apologies off.
"It wasn't your fault in the least." He told her. For a moment
he reflected on everything that happened. He wondered what his
father would think about all of this, and how he would handle
it. He was shaken from his thoughts when Delphine asked her
question. At first, he couldn't even respond. Her timid
demeanor, as well as the implications behind her question
actually made him sad! A woman of her status should never have
to serve anyone! "Lady Ange-"
He quickly caught himself. "A thousand pardons, Lady
Delphine..." He had heard the name 'Angelique' for years now,
and it would take some adjusting. "You are to become a member of
my family. You will not be serving anyone!" Her question came
with another realization though. The single bag she brought was
indeed the extent of her belongings! "But before that, I think
we should go shopping. You can't move to a new country with only
one bag of clothes!" He offered her a smile and instructed the
driver to a nearby town for a shopping spree for Lady Delphine.

She relaxed some when he told her it was alright yet again. At
least he was a forgiving man. And he did not stand for abuse.
Her fingers barely moved over her cheek. It was certainly
bruised and a little swollen. It indeed hurt though she didn't
complain about it. Nor shed tears as a child would. She had
worse pain than this throughout her life. Often paying for her
sisters mistakes as well as hers.
Tears threatened to burst from her though when he said she was
to become his family. What did that possibly mean? Did he still
intend to marry her? He may have forgiven her but surely he
didn't forget. She may not have enjoyed the idea of being a
stand in but she did agree. Even if it was with great
reluctance.
Then he moved on to the topic of her belongings. "I do-" She had
begun to explain that she didn't have much when what he said
registered. He was taking her shopping for clothes? He was
taking her on a spree? Panic rushed through her. She grabbed his
arm even though it was bad manners and pleaded with him.
"Please. You needn't spend any unnecessary money on me. Besides.
I really don't want to shop with my face bruised. I don't want
anyone to think badly of you for it. Please can we hold off?"

Delphine's pleas reached Cole's ears, and he nodded his head.
Given her situation, it was hard to fathom that she could take
the time to take what people would think of him into
consideration. Her upbringing had made her quite humble,
especially compared to her father.
"Very well." He said, as he examined her face.
The ice seemed to be helping, as it hadn't swollen. It was still
very red on one side, however. He reapplied the ice, hoping to
return her skin to it's normal color, but realizing that it may
simply take some time.
"I apologize." He said calmly, as his hand retreated to his own
form. "I didn't really give you much choice in departing your
home. And I shouldn't have made the assumption that you would
have any interest in joining my family either."
The sounds of the wheels, rolling over the stone road were
usually easy for Cole to tune out. But at this moment, he seemed
vastly aware of each bump. "The trip to Scotland is seven days.
Please take that time to recover, and decide what it is that you
want. Whatever it is, even if it's to return home, please let me
know, so that I can make sure that you get it."

Delphine wanted to tear up. Never had anyone ever considered
what she wanted. Never had anyone showed her kindness. Never had
she known what it was like for her heart to flutter and her
belly to flip flop. It was pleasant. She gave a small smile and
blushed.
''Well, I dont want to go back there.'' She touched the marks on
her face. "I mean would you? I have never been considered
anything close to wife material. I am surprised even under the
circumstances you would want to. But it feels so good to be
treated this way. I think I would much like to give you and your
home a chance. As I am concerned you rescued me. Thank you.''
She took his hand in hers and squeezed it, scooting a little
closer to him as the air took a small chill. Delphine wasnt sure
what her new life held, but she knew one thing. Anything had to
be better than where she came from. And having Cole on this
journey wasnt so bad either.
