       Re: Tale of Two Kingdoms
By: Renegade Date: June 12, 2015, 10:30 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Despite all the complications in his life, Jasper's eyes had
modly displayed bright colors lately. only in moments that were
undeniably bleak, such as the funeral, did he allow himself to
go into a place where his eyes darkened. But when Essie said
that Ayla was pregnant, the smile faded from Jasper's face,
replaced with an expression of pure shock, and along with it,
vaguely grey eyes. They didn't maintain that color lon though,
narrowing and fading to black when she made her comment about
him getting what he wanted. "What the Hell do you know about
what I 'wanted?' Since the end of the battle you could care less
about what's in my heart, or what would make me happy, so Don't
you dare pretend you've put any thought into it now!
Flashes of red burned through the black exterior of his eyes,
like embers burning from the ashes of a grand fire. Her apology
almost warranted another outburst, but his eyes softened when
she caught herself. It was at that moment that he smelled the
alcohol on her breath. He remembered words Walter spoke to him
once in that moment. "A drunken tongue speaks a sober mind."
She was jealous! All this time Jasper had thought she simply
hated him, but she was Jealous! of Ayla, and possibly of him as
well! This realization drained his anger, and replaced his
burning eyes, with a somber blue, but it did little to nothing
to make him feel better. When she threw up in her hands, Jasper
took a step back, but quickly gathered a towel to help her clean
herself up. Disregarding her statement, he escorted her to her
room, and helped her into bed. "I'll be back to check on you
later." He said, leaving her room and closing the door behind
       him.
On the way to see Ayla, he thought of many things; Having an
offspring of his own, the implication of their child being out
of wedlock, how both Ayla and Essie would feel about this. By
the time he arrived, there was such a mass of colors in his eyes
it was beyond being able to decipher. He walked around to the
side of the bed and took her hand. "Are you alright?" He asked.
A doctor came to his side "Excuse me, your Majesty, if I could
speak with you in private for a moment-" Jasper held up his
hand, signalling for the Doctor to fall silent. "Not now." He
said, his eyes never once falling from Ayla. She was his only
concern, and he already knew what the Doctor had to say...

Jasper came in, interrupting the doctor in the middle of her
instructions for her to care for herself. Ayla was thankful of
his presence, but she didn't know how to respond to his
question. After some time of silence, the doctor excused herself
to grant them a moment if privacy. As soon as the door closed,
Ayla reached out and took his hand in to hers.
"No," she finally replied, her voice thick.
She swallowed back tears and looked down at their intertwined
fingers. "I'll be up in an hour. We will make the announcement
then. Everyone needs to hear it from your mouth before the
       servants start to gossip."
Business was easier to talk about, especially now. Ayla looked
back up, watching him. "Unless you don't want to claim the
child. I would understand and the elders probably would approve
       of that choice."
She squeezed his hand. "I don't want you to be put in a bad spot
       because of me."

Jasper offered Ayla a gentle smile when she took his hand. It
was the first time she ever allowed their fingers to intertwine.
Even though she said she wasn't alright, there was a quiet
confidence in him that said he was with her, and he would make
sure she made it through with him. She had a point about the
gossip. The fact that Essie heard it before him was proof.
Jasper decided that once things calmed down and he was married
(most likely to Ayla,) He would fire everyone in the Palace, and
       hire an all new staff.
An irritated eye turned on the woman when she suggested he may
not want to claim the child. "I'll never be the type of King our
fathers were." He told her. "I intend to live my life as a man
of honor." He placed his hand on her still-flat belly and
smiled. "And I intend to teach our child to live with honor as
well." He raised her hand and kissed the back of it tenderly.
"So don't think you can get rid of me that easily."

Jasper listened to what Ayla had to say. Of course, he suspected
all along that she didn't want to be Queen, that she would
eventually get bored with him, go away and that would be that.
But the words that followed, caused his eyes to change to a
light red. He released both a sigh, and an apologetic smile. All
this time, he hadn't understood her feelings at all! Even after
Harry had told him! The two of them could have been working on
building something real! He planted a soft kiss on her lips. The
first one that wasn't driven by lust or desire. "I wish you
could have what you want Ayla..."
His voice was soft, ensuring that prying ears outside couldn't
hear them. "But to have me... I mean, to REALLY have me, means
to be Queen. There's no way for you to have both." Of course,
there was a way; For him to abandon his throne. But they both
       knew he could never do that. Ayla had a decision to make;
Jasper, or her Freedom. She couldn't have both..

The remnants of a smile that the King wore faded as Ayla gave
her answer. It wasn't out of surprise that he found himself
unable to smile. He had expected this for months. But for some
reason, hearing her tell him that they could not be sent a wave
of pain through him. When she sat on his lap, his hand supported
her thigh, and he held her, as if she was leaving that very
moment, and he would never see her again. The most insulting
part though, was what when she asked what he wanted to do.
'What do you mean what do I want to do?" I want to marry you! I
want to rule this Kingdom with you by my side and raise our
child together! I want to build a new Palace between your
Kingdom and mine, fire my entire staff and bring your men to
live and work at our side!'
But the words never escaped. He was unable to speak them aloud.
So he simply cradled her head and held her close to him for
several minutes. "Just... Stay in the Palace with me. Just until
the baby is born. You can make whatever decision you want
then.." He wanted to protect her and his child, no matter how
much she didn't want to be protected. And in nine months time,
who knew? maybe she would change her mind!" He looked to her
for an agreement. Everything could be settled once the Child was
       born...

Jasper couldn't help but to note how things never went the way
he wanted them to. But then, it would be selfish for him to ask
Ayla to do what he wouldn't. Her words were far from comforting
though; Especially since it was clear that the words spoken
weren't the words that originally came to mind. nonetheless, he
nodded his head, and followed her out the door, sending a few
messengers out to call the citizens for an announcement..
An hour later, Jasper stood over a mass of citizens with Ayla at
his side. Before he even opened his mouth, there was murmuring
about where Essie was. The King didn't let it get him down. He
stood before the citizens with Ayla's hand in his, and delivered
a grand speech about the Kingdom having a new Heir. Though there
was still confusion amongst the crowd, overall, they seemed
accepting. They knew of the Former Queen's treachery. and could
easily assume that changes in plans happened in response to that
fiasco. Once it was over, Jasper headed back inside. He went to
his room, and closed the door...

Ayla was thankful to have the announcement over with, but it
pained her that Jasper left her to go to his room. He needed
time to sort things out, but she needed him too. Instead of
allowing her mind to dwell on everything, she went into Jasper's
study to isolate herself from everyone. There, she sat down
behind his desk and prompted her feet on it. She leaned her
head back and rubbed her temples. During the last couple of
days, she had kept repeating in her head 'I'm fine', right now
she couldn't buy into that lie.
There were so many questions swirling in her mind, but one of
the main ones was why couldn't she stay? Never once had she
tried to understand her reasoning other than feeling some type
of loyalty to her men. But now, in the silence, she was drawn to
       dig deep.
"Ugh!" she groaned as she threw her feet back onto the wooden
       floor and began to pace.
If she stayed, she would always be watched and criticized. She
would never have freedom... but she would have Jasper. But, he
deserved a queen, which she was far from. There was no perfect
path to take, but she had to choose quickly considering she had
already told Jasper of her decision.
She looked out of the window and sighed. No, she couldn't
stay... Ayla had to return to her old life. She had a duty to
the men and to herself. Stony walls violated her freedom which
she had to fight to maintain over the years.
A knock came at the door, interrupting her thoughts. Upon her
word, a maid opened the door for the black bearded elder who was
carrying a tray with tea on it.
"Can I speak with you, princess?" he asked, bowing.
She grimaced. No matter how many times she had heard the title,
she still detested it. When she gave him a nod, he came forward
and set the tray on the desk. He rubbed his hands together.
"I just came to extend my congradulations to the mother," he
explained. When she remained silent, he continued. "Ayla, I'm
sorry for the loss of your son, truly."
       She looked away.
"I too lost my boy six years ago. It was tragic and I miss him
dearly," he said, sorrow taunting his voice.
Ayla sighed and nodded. "It's not something I think I'll ever
get over, but we live and we carry on."
He nodded, gravely and held out a cup for her after taking one
of his own. "To the dead."
With hesitancy, she took it. "And to the living."

Jasper's frustration caused him to want to isolate himself. It
wasn't Ayla's dedication to her men that frustrated him though,
it was her unwillingness to even discuss it! he fumed for a few
minutes, before remembering Essie's condition, and that he had
promised to come and check on her. That was almost two hours
ago. He figured now would be as good a time as any, so he headed
down the hall and got a pitcher of cold water. He headed toward
her room, and welcomed himself in. "How you feeling?" he asked,
slowly making his way around to the side of the bed and taking a
seat, pouring a glass for her. "Here. This will help." He said,
holding it until she was ready to take it. He didn't speak on
her earlier outburst. He didn't feel it was fair to hold it
       against her.

Essie glanced out from under her heavy eyelids as Jasper walked
into her room. She had a blanket tucked between her shoulder and
ear without a pillow to support her head.
"Probably better than what I deserve," she said, trying to think
       through the migraine.
She sat up and took the cup in her hands, but she stalled. "I'm
sorry, Jasper. I've been through a lot, but so have you. I
       haven't been a good friend."
Taking a sip of water, she looked down. Then, she sat back and
sighed, keeping the water between her hands. "How are you
handling everything? And don't just say fine."
She smiled softly, hoping he would let go of some pent up
emotions. It was the least she could do after everything. They
were still friends and he could still trust her, couldn't he?

Jasper hated seeing Essie in this condition; Especially if he
was the cause! She didn't realize it, but she deserved so much
better! He was the one who had been childish, and pushed her
away. But in his mind, he only needed a little space, and to
her, that meant her absence. they had both failed to
communicate, which lead to their current situation.
Despite his decision that he wanted Ayla as his partner, it
still pained Jasper to his core to hear Essie refer to herself
as his "friend." Harry had been right! He was greedy, and wanted
it all for himself! He shook the thought and turned his
attention back to Essie. "No worse than me." He said. fact of
the matter was they hadn't been good to each other since they
were kids. Was it really surprising that it carried on into
       adulthood?
When she asked how he was handling things, his eyes darkened,
and fell down to her bedsheets. "Nothing has gone the way I've
planned since the day that you got here..." He said. It was
true. When she arrived, he planned for the two of them to
continue fighting, and they didn't. Then she hurt herself, then
his father died, and everything spiraled out of control from
there. "I fear that with so little control over my life, my
chances for being successful as a King are slim." A heavy sigh
"I won't be like our fathers. I want to be a man of honor, and
raise my children with love and care. But this child wasn't a
part of my plans either. I don't know what to do. about
       anything..."
