They began to eat dinner after waiting on Jasper for a bit. She
hardly ate as she watched her son. He devoured anything and
everything put before him. He was growing so fast; his father
would have been proud. It wasn't fair how they were just now
meeting, but she vowed to protect him and be make up for lost
time. After their meal, she sent him off to bed. He left,
leaving her to dine alone.
Halfway into her roll, an elder came in and sat down. His long
black beard nearly touched his belly which looked like the top
of a muffin squished against the table. She ignored him until he
spoke.
"You would be wise to return home," he said, tapping an index
finger on the table. When she didn't respond, he carried on.
"Essie deserves this, not you. She has prepared for it all of
her life and her and Jasper had something before you came
along."
She looked up and wiped her mouth with a napkin. "If they did,
it wasn't strong enough to keep them together."
He wrinkled his forehead with his knitted together brow. "You
tempt him and you think the crown is a game. You are just using
Jasper." Her expression darkened, but he shook his head,
interrupting her thoughts. "Do you even care for the man or are
you just sleeping with him?"
Immediately, she stood up to leave, but he caught her wrist. The
hold was gentle, only meant to stall her. "Please, just do the
right thing. Don't hurt them so you can have fun."
Ayla glared down at his hand around her wrist and contemplated
six different ways of removing it. They ranged from dislocation,
breaking bone, and techniques of full removal of his hand from
his arm.
"Contrary to popular belief, I am not toying with them," she
argued. "I care for Jasper and for the crown."
His hand retreated from hers as he stared back at her, trying to
peel off her facade with his eyes. "You can't fool me, Ayla. The
way you look at him, it's not love or care. I wonder if this was
how you treated your fiance."
Ayla wanted to punch him, in fact she did and felt her hand
'pop' upon contact. He fell back in his chair and held his
bleeding nose. Crawling to his feet, he pointed at her.
"You will pay for this, " he promised before storming out of the
room.
She left the dining area as well only in the opposite direction.
Without really thinking of where she was going, she headed to
Jasper's study. Opening the door to the study, she looked
around, wondering if he would be there or not.

Jasper wasn't sure what to expect wen Ayla came through the
door. But that certainly wasn't it. When she straddled him, his
hands immediately moved to support her weight, and his tongue
instinctively danced with hers. He couldn't deny her. He just
didn't have it within him! But at the same time, there was
something different about this. It didn't feel like it was
necessarily him she wanted, but rather an escape; An escape from
whatever it was that was on her face when she appeared at the
door. He couldn't help but wonder if there was a better way to
help her, but as her clothes began working their way off, he
found himself losing to her appeal. His eyes filled with desire
as his lips attacked her newly exposed flesh. Before he knew
what he was doing, he had picked her up and laid her down on his
desk. It was clear Ayla would have what she wanted. The things
Walter would say if he could see him now...

Essie was still tired when she woke up, but she felt ten times
better. Her stomach growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten
hardly anything for the last week. First, she needed to seek out
some advise.
After she had bathed and dressed, she traveled to Jasper's
kingdom on horseback. Once there, she allowed the stable boy to
put the horse up and she went into the castle. The place was
busy, probably because of all of the repairs being done. She was
glad to have a break from everything.
With the help of few servants and a guard, she was able to track
Walter down in the courtyard. He was alone, fortunately,
standing there looking as if he was waiting on someone. She
greeted him with a small smile as she approached.
"Good morning," she said. "I was hoping I could talk to you
about Jasper. "
She had to fight the urge to nervously fidget. It wasn't like
her to go behind Jasper's back, but she felt as if she didn't
have any other choice. Her bright green eyes took the man in as
she thought of how to phrase her question. In their earlier
years, he had been more laid back than Jasper and it was the
same way today. It was easy to comfortable talking to him too,
which was why she needed to be careful with what she said. Not
because he wasn't trustworthy, but because he was still Jasper's
friend. She bit the inside of her lip.
"Do you-," she started, then shook her head. "Has he mentioned
anything to you about what he is feeling or thinking about
everything? I just don't know what to do."
She sat down on a bench and sighed. Despite all of the sleep she
had gotten, she was still tired and thinking about Jasper made
her feel that more drained.

Walter straightened his posture when he saw Essie approaching.
Jasper was a fool if he messed this up! but then again, if she
didn't end up with Jasper.... He shook the thought before she
even arrived. She would end up with Jasper! That was just the
way it was going to happen! "Good morning, Essie." He said,
bowing politely. He was surprised when she said she wanted to
ask about Jasper. Naturally he had come to meet with Jasper, and
he would be arriving any moment, but he would oblige to the best
of his ability. "Sure." He told her. "what is it?"
Her question was extremely vague, but it brought a smile to the
young Noble's lips. The Essie of old wouldn't give a damn what
Jasper was thinking or doing! Of course, she already knew about
the situation between Jasper and Ayla, so there was no reason
for him to bring up that awkard situation. "Well, he told me
about the complicated situation you guys have going on." He
said, exhaling. "I'm sorry things haven't fallen into place for
you guy by the way..."
He looked up at the sky for a moment before deciding how much he
should divulge. He's in a tough place now, you know? he feels
like the chances of the two of you having a future are dwindling
away. And in the face of near certain rejection from you..." He
didn't want to say that Ayla was filling the place of Essie
because he had lost hope of her wanting him, but the insinuation
was clear. Jasper may not have actually said those words to him,
but that was what he truly believed! And if Essie needed a
little nudge in the right direction, he would gladly give her
that!
"Hey listen..." He said. "Jasper's supposed to be meeting me
here in a few minutes, but I just remembered I have some
business to take care of in town. Could you let him know I'll
meet up with him later this afternoon? After a farewell
greeting, he made his way out of the Palace. His presence wasn't
needed at the moment...

A cool breeze swept across the courtyard as she listened to him.
Several different expressions warped her face, but she had come
to listen, not speak. When he said he had to go, she blinked and
nodded. But, of course she wouldn't tell Jasper anything when
she wanted to avoid him now. She watched him leave, feeling more
alone and hopeless as ever.
He hadn't said it, but they both knew what was occurring between
Jasper and Ayla. He had mentioned something about rejection on
her end, leaving her a bit agitated. Jasper wasn't worried about
her rejection, he was torn between the two women. And she was
not the type to pursue someone who didn't want to be pursued.
She felt bad for having to put Walter in an awkward position,
which was also why she didn't press. He shared what he thought
he could and that's more than she could ask for.
Essie decided to focus on the kingdom until if or when Ayla
warmed up to the idea of being queen. Hopefully, that would
never happen, but she had no idea what the future may hold.

It had been three days since Robin had fallen ill. Ayla
constantly tended to his needs and never strayed from his bed.
With every cough, another piece of her heart broke for her son.
Not knowing how to help him was slowly eating her inside. Always
so confident and sure that nothing could stand in her way, she
had never dreamed someone so small and innocent would be the
cause of her demise.
As he clung to life, she held his hand, never letting go of the
smile on her lips. Even if she suspected he wouldn't pull
through, she wouldn't let him know it or see the fear wringing
her heart.
It was evening or so she thought. The days had started to blur
together. Jasper was kind to her and Robin. He often took time
out if his schedule to come visit them and bring Robin gifts to
cheer him up. At first, he would bring fresh rolls, but when he
stopped eating, he started bringing various objects. They all
seemed to brighten his spirits, until today. Raspy and weak, he
breathed, but at least he still had breaths left in him.
Gently, she pushed aside his hair out of his eyes and squeezed
his hand. Having thought the boy was sleeping, he startled her
when he suddenly spoke.
"Mom?" he asked, his voice so small and frail.
She smiled. "Yes, son?"
"Do you think, Jasper will let me have my job back when I get
better?"
"I know he will. You are his best helper," she said.
He smiled, seemingly relieved to hear it. All too soon, his
smile faded though and he grew still. Ayla called for a servant,
but she knew he was gone.
-
The funeral was nice and a lot of people attended to mourn his
death. Ayla went and played her part by thanking those who gave
her their condolences. As soon as she could, she ducked out of
the crowd and sought out some solitude until everyonr had
dispersed.
She was in desparate need of some whiskey, but her stomach
churned at the thought of it. There was nothing she could find
to do that seemed to take the edge off of her grief. Once
everyone had gone to sleep, she snuck back in, avoiding all of
those who may cross her path along the way.
Ayla didn't object to where her feet were taking her, hell she
hadn't any strength left to do so. She hoped to find Jasper in
his room and as suspected, he was in his bed. Closing the door
softly behind her, she then crawled in his bed and laid down
beside him. She didn't speak as she placed her arms around him
and her head on his shoulder. It was evident by now that neither
of them really knew how to convey their emotions to one another.
Or at least she didn't and tonight was no exception.
Tears rolled down her cheeks, soaking the skin along his chest,
but she never made a sound. She cried herself to sleep without
thinking of what he might think of her afterwards or how it may
bring complications to their relationship.

The past two months had been complicated. Jasper had tried to
sort through his feeling for both women, who were constantly
required to travel back and forward between Kingdoms. But Essie
avoided him at every chance, only really talking to him when it
was concerned with business. He and Ayla, from the outside,
would appear to have formed a solid relationship, but it was
never solidified. Whenever he lay with her, her words always
radiated in his mind
"You can't... But you might be able to catch one that would sate
your hunger."
So that was their reality... She was only there to satisfy his
needs... And he was only there to satisfy hers... And yet, there
were moments in their intimacy that Jasper couldn't help but
feel were shared in affection, not simply lust, or attraction.
It seemed Jasper would not end up marrying either of the late
King's daughters. And if he did, it would either be strictly
business, or strictly sexual.Love would not play a part. The
three of them had been given until year's end to decide what
they were going to do. They only had six weeks left, and they
hadn't discussed it one bit...
Though the King's life had become confusing and stressful. There
was one thing that always brought a smile to it. Since the day
he popped into Jaspers office, Robin had become his little right
hand. Jasper always let Robin try the food first, and Robin
provided him with positive energy and good company. Other than
him occasionally asking Jasper if he was going to marry his
mother and become his new dad, the boy was the perfect stress
relief.
The reality was, Jasper had to marry either Essie or Ayla. Essie
was more responsible. She knew the ins and outs of running a
Kingdom. She knew Royal protocol, and would be an excellent
partner for Jasper as King. But their marriage would be dry and
lonely. Ayla may not have loved Jasper, but at least she liked
him! They would enjoy living together, and perhaps something
could even grow from it! But wouldn't marrying Ayla just for his
own comfort be selfish and disloyal to his Kingdom? It was all a
headache.
And then Robin fell ill. Jasper sent for the best Doctors in the
Kingdom, but no one could say what it was that was making the
boy sick. He spent a lot of time at the boy's bedside. He
brought him all sorts of treats, anything he could do to keep
his spirits up. But to all of the adults, Robin's fate seemed
clear...
Next to Ayla, Jasper probably took Robin's death the hardest.
The little brat really kept him grounded when no one else could.
He really struggled with it, but he knew that the pain he felt
couldn't compare to Ayla's pain, so when he caught Ayla trying
to slip out, he helped her by drawing attention to himself with
an elegant speech, allowing her time to escape without peering
eyes on her.
That night, Jasper couldn't sleep. He mourned for Robin, and
worried for Ayla. She had never returned, and he feared she may
be drinking herself into a stupor! He lay on his back, with his
hands folded behind his head. His eyes were half closed, but
sleep didn't take him. He heard footsteps approaching, and
watched as Ayla entered his room. He knew this wouldn't be one
of her normal visits. There was no way she could crave him in
that way. Not now... He waited for her to speak, but she never
did. She simply climbed into his bed, lay her head on his chest
and cried herself to sleep. A comforting arm wrapped itself
around her waist, and eventually, Sleep took the King as well.

The next morning, she slipped out of bed before the sun rose and
was careful not to disturb the king as he lay sleeping. She
already had her mind set on leaving and prolonging the
inevitable would just cause more pain. Ayla didn't know if it
was possible to feel worse, but she knew allowing her feelings
to grow for a not-so-available-but-kind-of-available man, would
at least complicate things. Also, deep down she knew he deserved
a queen, not a thief who was lost...
Outside, she readied her horse. After she tightened the straps
of the saddle, she suddenly felt weak and dizzy. Such a strange
feeling, she had no idea that the black dots that were growing
in her vision would increase until she fainted.
-
A servant knocked on the king's door and did not wait for an
answer to barge in. The servant was a young, timid girl who
looked barely thirteen.
"King Jasper," she said, trying to wake him. "So sorry to
disturb you, but I have news from the doctor."
She explained how Ayla had passed out and was now in the room
down the hall. Also, she told him that the doctor needed to see
him as soon as possible. Then, she rushed out, clearly afraid of
him.
-
When she woke, she was confused. The room around her looked
familiar, but she had no idea why she was here. Slowly, her gaze
fell on one of the woman doctors how had cared for her son. This
time, it would seem that she was caring for her. Ayla started to
sit up, but was stopped by the doctor's firm hand.
"No, rest," the doctor said, her native dialect coming through
as she spoke.
Ayla shook her head defiantly and sat up anyways. "I am fine, I
am just tired," she insisted although she wasn't entirely
certain that was the case. The doctor shook a finger at her.
"You need rest," she replied, then pointed to her stomach
region. "Babe needs it."
Ayla frowned. "Umm, I am not a child."
She better pray it was due to her broken English that was why
she called her a baby. However the doctor laughed and given
Ayla's current mood, she was in no mood to deal with her rude
behavior.
"Listen, I'm fine," Ayla said, glaring at the woman.
The woman chuckled. "Yes, you and baby."
"Ba-?"
Ayla slowly laid back down as she started to become faint again.
"Baby? No that's not possible. You must be mistaken," Ayla
responded in disbelief.
"I doctor. Doctor never wrong about pregnancy," the doctor
exclaimed before standing and rummaging through her medicine
bag.
Ayla was in absolute shock. Agony and grief, made it almost
impossible for her to be happy. How could have this happen now
of all times? What would Jasper do?

It had been hard to lose Jasper, but to lose someone to death
was even worse. In the last few months, Essie had grown fond of
seeing Robin at every meal when she was at Jasper's kingdom.
Also, unbeknownst to anyone, she had started helping him with
riding. He had loved horses, especially Jasper's. Every time
they rode, he begged to ride that particular horse. So, she
allowed him under her careful eye.
They had ridden a few dozen times, but it didn't seem like a lot
when they would never get to do it again. The funeral had been
good, yet terrible. Even during this time of grief, she stayed
clear of Jasper and Ayla. They seemed to be getting along well
on their own. She was too proud to admit the jealousy she felt.
During the funeral, she saw Ayla leave and Jasper quickly draw
the attention to himself. He was always protecting those he
cared for.
She hadn't stayed long after that, deciding to deal with her
sorrow without hundreds of prying eyes on her. That night, she
drank herself into a stupor in her room. The alcohol magnified
her grief instead of numbing. Fortunately, sleep took her
quickly and she slept until a little after the sun had risen.
A commotion in the hallway disturbed her slumber. In fear of
something had happened to Ayla or Jasper, she got out of bed and
went to investigate. Servants spoke back and forth in whispered
tones outside of a guest room, but stopped at once as they saw
her approach.
"What's going on," Essie slurred partly due to being half-awake
and partly due to being somewhat drunk still.
She could tell by their expressions that they could detect
liquor on her breath, but she didn't care. Repeating the
question, she pointed a finger at a younger, more fearful maid
and demanded that she reply.
"Princess, umm, Ayla umm, is pregnant."
Essie felt her eyes widen. This meant so much. She rubbed her
temples, taking a selfish moment to compose herself before
straightening her spine.
"I will remember each and everyone of your faces," Essie said,
her voice low and threatening. "I swear, if any of this gets out
before the king makes a royal announcement, you and your
families will never find work in this or my kingdom again, is
that understood?"
They all bowed and excused themselves. Essie didn't know what to
do until she saw Jasper,Getty she had no clue where he was at.
Standing there, she waited to see if he would turn up.

Late to bed, late to rise. It was a recurring bad habit of
Jaspers. He could never seem to wake up before Essie either! His
eyes opened slowly when he was addressed by the young servant.
He didn't remember her name, but she always seemed afraid he
would berate her in some way. He yawned and stretched, as he
slowly rose from the bed. His spirits had lifted a bit from the
night before, until the girl delivereed the news, which gave
birth to a frustrated sigh from the King. "Thank you." He told
the girl. "I'll get on that right away."
Once he was dressed, he left his room and headed down the hall.
Ayla passing out didn't sound like a life threatening emergency.
She probably over-exerted herself from stressing out; A reaction
that was very much warranted. Jasper decided that he would check
on her and then get started on his business for the day. He
hadn't expected, however, to run into Essie along the way. "Good
morning!" He greeted pleasantly. "How are you this morning?"
Despite Essie's unwillingness to communicate with him, he always
tried to be pleasant with her and start conversations with her.
Surely she would rush about her business and hurry to escape his
presence, and it hurt him every time. But he wouldn't give up.
Regardless of what she thought, she was important to him...
