The world was full of many mystical things and it
continued to bear such wondrous creations. Some lived
eternities, some lived seconds, and the world continued to make
them. In such a dynamic state of living, she had found that
there were but a few things that could remain eternal; the magic
of emotion. Love lasted a lifetime, despair too, and for a being
such as herself a lifetime was truly, truly long.
----------
Atop the crest of a small hill, flower bloomed in a solitary
patch and at the center sat a lone figure. As if she'd blossomed
from the petals of the floral mass, the figure focused upon
something within her covered lap, the concentration she held
seemed almost out of place among the serene expression that
painted her delicate figures. With delicate fingers she wove
together broken bits of freshly picked flowers as a flutter of
butterflies wove their way around her, a kaleidoscope of
ever-changing color that seemed stark and out of place among
such a barren area. Their flowing forms touched upon the tops of
fragile flowers as a soft breeze kicked within the wind, sending
the strands of her iridescent hair to dance as the creatures
around her once did and with the breeze came the smell of the
world around her.
The concentration upon her features melted gently away, leaving
behind a morose expression while a half-woven flower crown lay
in her lap, her violet gaze shifting away from the unfinished
project to look outwards into the distance around her. What met
her gaze was a painful and stark remembrance of the times the
world now lay in, a period of barren lands. Just a few feet away
jade grass turned into darkened dirt that could no longer bear
fruit, further lay the hollow bones of dried and broken trees
alongside empty riverbeds that no longer offered water, only the
cracked patterns that added to the dry, broken puzzle that
swarmed the land in this era. Such a sight saddened her, to say
the least.
The small and beautiful insects around her fluttered helplessly
around her form, swaying from flower to flower with wings
flapping in her distress while she stood slowly. Her bare feet
memorized the feel of the grass beneath her while she allowed
the small crown to sift and fall away from her lap, the vibrant
colors of the flowers unwoven spiraled with the breeze only to
fall a short distance upon the red-brown ground in front of her,
where they would die within perhaps a day or two. This was a
fact she knew now, nothing lived in this world for very
long...nothing she enjoyed, at least. Humans seemed to be the
only things that continued to struggle to survive and even then,
most of them had died during the darker times of this era. "I
understand the mission you gave me, but I do not think it is
possible to accomplish..."
With a soft sigh, the pale figure clothed in a colorful array of
loose-fitting clothing turned away from the broken crown and she
carefully took one step away from her small oasis, and with that
step formed a small, foot-shaped patch of luminous grass while
the small area behind her began to lose its color. Green turned
to yellow, yellow to brown, and like all other life it slowly
faded into crunchy, frail ground that showed no hope of
returning to its former glory. With every step she took, this
situation occurred over and over again. Such would repeat itself
until the pale feet that touched the ground began to slowly
disappear, leaving in its wake a trail of brilliantly colored
butterflies, the path of such metamorphosis continuing further
along her body until a vibrant rabble of butterflies now
dispersed their way forward in an elegant formation, no true
destination in their path.

With a faint rustle of dying leaves, a small figure stirred in a
tree not far from the delight of colours that decorated the
small hill. For a moment, silence fell once again until a soft
humming sound beat out from one of the branches. A dainty bird,
barely two inches in hight fluttered out of the brown mass of
leaves, the wind from it's tiny wings barely nudging them as it
passed despite beating so fast they were a blur. The colours of
its feathers changed with the light, as it's head turned one way
it shimmered with royal blues and deep greens, but as it turned
another way, the colours shifted to bright reds and vivid
yellows. As though it were motioning to another to follow, it
bobbed its head towards the dying tree and the figure that sat
in wait on the branch.
Slowly, the branches began to sway and the leaves rustled once
more as a young girl moved into view. She was a fairly plain
girl, but for two simple facts - her hair was completely shaven
and her eyes changed colour in the same way as her birds
feathers. Sliding a dainty hand over her bald head, she cast a
quick glance to the hummingbird who had now landed on a nearby
branch before looking out at the world. It broke her heart to
see it the way it was, so lacking in life and colour. But what
would be, would be. If this was to be the way her home was, then
so be it.
With a soft chirrup, the hummingbird nipped at her finger
gently, causing her to force a smile. "You're right, be grateful
for what we have." She nodded to herself before sinking back
into the leaves to climb down. Her small body allowed her to
carefully climb down with ease, clambering from one branch to
the next with surprising grace. Reaching the last, she allowed
herself to drop, landing in a crouch before standing to her full
height of a mere 4"8. Rolling her shoulders, she took a deep
breath and looked up. Her small nest of leaves was already
starting to crumble, but she wasn't surprised. These days they
only lasted two, three nights at most. Of course she could build
a proper shelter to stay in, but she preferred being so much
closer to nature.
Suddenly, her eyes landed on something she hadn't seen for a
long time. Greenery. "No way..." Her voice caught in her throat,
she could hardly believe her eyes. But it was fading already!
Her bare feet kicked off and she ran towards the small hill, the
grass so full of life already dying before she could reach it.
Oh what cruel fate would lure her with such a sight only to have
it die before she could feel it with her own flesh?! She could
barely hear the humming of her companions wings over the sound
of her pounding feet, not bothering with keeping herself quiet -
this was hardly a cause for caution. This was life! By the time
she had reached the hill, the green grass had faded to it's
regular dull brown and her heart sank. Falling to her knees, she
picked at a few crispy blades, glad of the comforting feel of
the bird's tiny feet on her shoulder and it's feathers against
her neck.
"We missed it." She whispered softly, though there was no
sadness on her face, no frown nor tears, only acceptance. Of
course she had missed it. It probably hadn't even been there in
the first place, maybe the lack of life had finally pushed her
into hallucin-what was that? Further down the hill, just out of
sight as she had been running but now at the top she could see
over. Scrambling to her feet once more, her gaze landed on a
girl. And following that girl? Green! "Hey!" Out of mere
reaction she shouted, before clamping her hands over her mouth.
She hadn't meant to shout, and so rudely! Should she hide? Duck
out of sight? But surely she could only bring goodness, she
brought life with her mere footsteps. But what was this?
Butterflies?! Perhaps she was going mad... Or her eyes were
playing tricks on her? Whatever the situation, surely it
couldn't have been real. Could it?
